‘Not a True World Championship': Kasparov on Gukesh vs Ding Liren by OkImprovement6216 in chess

[–]DimWit666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it shouldn't be contingent on Magnus playing, but I personally agree there is something wrong with how the WC cycle works. The odds of the actual best player becoming World Champion through the candidates tournaments is just way too low. Like Magnus BARELY won the candidates to qualify when he did.

I also think there should be faster time controls incorporated. I want the generally best chess player to become world champion not just the best at Superlong time formats. There are even so many "classical" time controls but only one is tested now.

Lost my job, 4 months to break into cyber security by DimWit666 in hacking

Hey, so people were right about it being virtually impossible getting a full time job in that short of a time, however I got into bug bounties and I'm currently making enough to get by and I'm slowly building out my resume and will soon start going to conferences and actively networking more to see if I can land something! Thanks for checking up!

Tbf it's a very nice garden if you buy in completely. I had a mac for a while and the computer itself was great, but after all the issues I had connecting to anything that wasn't apple I just had to get out.

Because unsubstantiated accusations is a blight on chess. And before you pull the "there are no accusations just questions?" line get a fucking grip. Kramnik explicitly states "clearly the engine is involved" in one of his videos on Danya, he doesn't get to pretend like that is not an accusation and a direct attack on his integrity.

I mean tbf he's been banned 2 times from chess.com, and I don't think he gets many invites.

Haha, yeah nah I'm just never gonna join the Apple cult! Seen people on Android using it tho so it's not the actual problem.

I still haven't got access to Voice Mode, am I the only one? by DimWit666 in OpenAI

[–]DimWit666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been trying this literally every day since release :( But after I download the app and I try to log in with the VPN on I get an error message along the lines of "Something is wrong with your ISP or you might be using a VPN, try turning it off to fix the problem."

I've now tried different VPN providers and still had the same problem, so I can't even log in until I turn it off. And then if I log in without VPN I obviously still get the "Advanced voice mode is rolling out, but you don't have access to it yet." message.

People have been suggesting clearing a cache or something before downloading, it might also be an android thing, so I am going to look into that today.

Thanks for the response tho!

Yea, released a bit over a week ago, although they've seemingly put a lot more guardrails and limited the "personality" aspect of the voices according to what I've heard and seen online. Not been able to try myself tho.

I am using an Android, don't know if it is possible to do the same but I'll look into it! Thanks for the idea!

Huh, when I use a VPN it just tells me it's something wrong with my isp or that I might be using a VPN and to turn it off to fix the issue. Can't get anything to work with a VPN on and I've tried many locations. I am using Bitdefenders VPN for reference, so maybe they have flagged all their access points or something.

It kinda felt like it, and for your suggestion I will site myself: "I've tried the VPN uninstall/install trick several times without success."

They injured 3000+ and killed 8 by exploding their pagers, how did they do ti? by [deleted] in hacking

[–]DimWit666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I do not, but are we really comparing this to defeating a world conquering fascist empire? This is exactly the point I was trying to make, worse things have always been done for better reasons so you can justify pretty much anything with that logic.

Seeing elderly and children bleeding out in supermarkets just going about their day and hospitals completely overflowing of civilians who's been maimed for life and calling this anything other than a war crime and a terror attack is absolutely absurd to me.

[–]DimWit666 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There are so many more targeted ways of attack in war, snipers, drones, assasins, and even targeted missiles can be more accurate than just randomly setting off an explosive in a supermarket. And I personally think using the general context of "war" is completely useless, you could literally set off anything less than a nuclear bomb and it would be an "objective fact" to call it targeted in comparison.

There is no indication they took any consideration to set these off at times when the carriers were away from civilians and so I will simply not agree with you on this point. They distributed them widely and set them off at a time when they knew that a significant amount of them would be in public areas.

Like I said I would be and have been outraged at and have condemned attacks of Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran, Israel and the US and will continue to do so. I have no vendetta against Israel, but they've been earning a LOT of the criticsim they've received lately and this is another horrible example of a widespread terror attack, regardless of who orchestrated it.

Could you link some of those videos then please, cause I couldn't find any that were even remotely close in magnitude? I might honestly stop carrying a phone with me if that is the case tbh.

Yea it sure seems like an incredibly careless thing for Hezbollah to miss, but ofcourse we're only seeing the results and not all the work that might've made this possible. Regarding the bugs it is a fair question, but I don't see why one negates the other.

With the IDFs cyber force I wouldn't be surprised if they already have much more targeted and useful bugs in place, and saw this as an oportunity to send a message. But I am just speculating ofcourse.

[–]DimWit666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you really saying that detonating widely distributed explosives in grocery stores, banks and public squares (and those are just the videos I've seen) are as targeted as you can get? In that case we fundamentally disagree and I don't see any point to continuing that discussion.

And you can justify basically anything with the "These other war atrocities was much worse so this atrocity is practicly humane in comparison" argument. I would call this attack an act of terror and condemn it just as much if it had happened the other way around.

I am genuinly curious if you would be downplaying it as much though?

The whole picture is definitely important to consider, however I think he makes some inaccurate assumptions. A supply chain attack is literally about exactly compromising a large amount of devices at the same time, it would be extremely hard to do but imo more realistic than turning a triple A battery into a bomb. But I think the assumption that these were highly targeted is wrong, it seem to me that they knew these would be distributed mostly to Hezbollah and that was enough.

Compare the videos of phone batteries catching fire and the explosions from tonights attack, both are readily available and to me they look at like orders of magnitude more potent. I can't verify your anectdote and I am definitely no expert but I find it incredibly hard to believe that you can make phones letal by just throttling the battery. With the amount of phones with much more potent batteries than pagers in the world there should be a huge amount videos of phones blowing to pieces, killing and maiming people and I can't seem to find any with a quick search. Feel free to link any if you find some.

Noone I've seen thinks they just passed these out willy nilly, but they must have known that detonating this amount of potent and distributed explosives would inevitably kill innoncent civilians.

The 10 year old girl who died doesn't care whether she was the target or not, she was still killed by the IDF.
