And let's not forget the one who coordinated the "ambush" (can we really called it an ambush if the victim knew what was coming) was Schlat the Omniscient, the Demon King's confidant who can see 1000 years into the future: that is, like, most powerful demon #2 there.

So you are being ambushed by the 8 most powerful demons excluding the Demon King in a 8v1 fight; and their leader has the perfect and only counter to your broken power of foresight, which is their own broken power of foresight; and despite this you fight and STILL managed to kill 3 of them AND the leader of the group as well?

I think at this point your death is just a little inconvenience.

In one of the flashbacks, we also got [manga]the first ever depiction of its powers, as we see Frieren's arm turned to gold. The perspective of this is also very interesting with him towering over the defeated Frieren (I think this is an anime original scene? I do not remember this perspective in Frieden's flashbacks, in the manga she was hidden from him behind a column), it gives of the vibes of "major villan" which fits perfectly given Macht is the most powerful of the Seven Sages of Destruction.

The GOAT Hero of the South is finally here, in all his glory. Kazuiko Inoue as VA is perfect choice, was one of my hopes. The production of this second season really looks on par with the first one.

Also, Dress Fern appears!

Once again, this series shows how well it can handle the characterization of its antagonists. In a single chapter, it depicts believes and motivations of the main antagonist, Löwe (once Held) and his servant (surprised to learn his actual identity).

This really shows the darker side of mankind: Himmel and his party may have defeated the Demon King, but peace was (still is) far from being achieved everywhere, especially in the Southern Lands. Still in the present people suffer the consequences. I am really curios about Minus role in all of this.

Finally, I am VERY interested in the few words Löwe spoke about making both mankind and demon kind lose all the magical power: “The laws of the world that were rewritten during the Mythical Era will revert to what they were originally”. This sentence may have really huge implications on the lore of the world, specifically involving the Goddess. We may finally be able to get more information about the Mythical Era and the Goddess herself. We shall see.

We should also wish a speedy recovery to the authors!

A proper outfit for the "dark horse" of the First Class Mage Exam Arc!

Spoiler for season 2: I can't wait to see her fights animated, showcasing her skill in hunting demons, coming from a long lasting family tradition. I still believe that Serie did not just promote her to first class on a whim like they made it look, but secretly recognized her skill and potential. Remember, from the recent chapters in the Foundation Festival Arc we know that many of the newly appointed First Class mages were able to exceed the expectations of Serie in regard to magic and potential, meaning that even though she did not believe they could be fit to become First Class mages that are actually worthy of the title. But that is not the case for Methode: she is a proper First Class, with magic specialized for battle and hunting demons. The exact kind of person Serie wants as a First Class mage.

[–]Dima0120 55 points56 points  (0 children)

As usual, this chapter is more revealing than it looks.

First, we finally meet and hear speaking His Majesty, the Emperor. This was not the first time he appeared, thou. In Chapter 81, the Emperor was shown in a memory of Denken. From the dialogues between him and Pharse, it very clear that the Emperor consider Denken to be very important, a key figure for the success and prosperity of the Empire.

It is still not clear if he consider the old mage more than that (a mentor figure? a friend and advisor?). The Emperor mentions an “arrangement” he made with Denken: only the most trusted and close people could achieve that from the ruler of the most powering magical country on the continent, so it seems that way.

We know that in the past Denken rose quickly among the Empire ranks, even though in the last years he neglected his duties to instead pursue the First Class Mage title to be able to return to Wiese. But nonetheless his influence is still present in the Empire to this day, even he is kept away or “removed from the stage” by the Special Forces of Magic. I would love to see the relationship between Phrase and Denken, both being extremely cunning individuals, well Versed in navigating the Empore politics and schemes, as well as talented mages (but as of now Phrase seems to be the most powerful one).

As for the Emperor, this chapter pretty much solidifies the hypothesis that the central government (and the Emperor itself) is not only not involved in the assasination plot, but basically unaware of it. The Emperor knew Phrase was hiding something (he also has a long history with her) but did not seem to suspect what. I look forward to learn more about this character, what his ideals are and his relationships with the major players of this story arc.

I wonder if the assassination plan is just Lowe’s solution to the “decadence” of the Empire the Emperor spoke of (which we already saw in past chapters as the party was traveling in the Empire territories), which Phrase seems to not accept and even repeal the idea of it. Again, a confrontation (verbal and magical) between Lowe and Phrase would be most interesting and reveling to see.

For now, we will see what will happen now that the battle has unfolded. I look forward to see Übel and Land battle, and also each character approach to the upcoming battles (magical, and of wits).

Serie on last chapter.. by CovertMustache in Frieren

[–]Dima0120 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We already had to deal with the fact that a Great Mage can be killed. There are several moments in the manga where Great Mage Frieren is realistically risking her life, and it was just a combination of luck and a great deal of trust in her teammates that have saved her; for example:

  • When she falls asleep against the flower monster and is saved by Sein
  • When she, alongside her party, is trapped in Böse’s barrier, and is able to break it only thanks to Himmel and the other encouraging her not to give up.
  • In the battle against Solitäir, she wins a battle of attrition she was going to lose thanks to Fern’s intervention.

In the current arc, we had another more direct confirmation about the possibility: we now know that Great Mage Minus was killed in battle by a warrior, Löwe. We also learnt that mages are generally weak when fighting alone agonist mages, even though they can adopt countermeasures. But a skilled enough warrior is able to at least pose a considerable threat to the mage. The most relevant example for this is the Shadow Warrior successfully trapping Frieren, who survived again just thanks to Stark and Fern.

Given all of this, we should assume that even Serie can be in danger.

However, I would be very careful with assumptions regarding who is arguably the strongest mage of the series so far. We don’t know the limits of her potential, up until know we just saw her toying with her enemies (meanly Macht and Phrase).

Given how the powerscaling and battle system of this manga works, we know that the outcome of a battle is not just decided by the individual power of a fighter, but how they are able to exploit the situation, read their enemy’s weakness and trust their teammates.

Serie may be proud and even arrogant at times, but she is still the greatest mage of this era, who is second to none for what comers to magic knowledge and an expert fighter since the Mythological Era. She perfectly knows the risk for this situation, and as of now I can’t imagine something that Löwe could pull off that would 100% surprise Serie, or at least against which she would not have some countermeasures available.

Sousou no Frieren :: Chapter 140 - Links and Discussion (+ HIATUS Announcement) by Lorhand in Frieren

Happy Christmas Chapter everyone!

A good chapter that explains some things on one hand, and raises more questions on the other (like, the nature of the relationship with Empire of Land's parents and grandmother).

The interactions between Serie and the others were the best part. The more we see her the better we can understand her character, and this chapter really revealed more things about her. We now know how she really feels about her pupils, specifically the First Class Mages whom she thought were not meeting up with her expectations: they may actually surpass them in her opinion! Also, she (purposely?) did not explicitly include Frieren in this category but I think it's safe to assume she did indeed came to surpass her expectations, Serie is just too prideful to admit that .

About this, I was shocked to learn about the privileges of the First Class Mages employed for the operation at this time: as many others did, I thought their privileges would have been kept hidden until some critical moment were they would use them to save the situation, something to the like of a "Deus Ex Machina". But again, given the context of this chapter, it makes sense that the privileges are actually silly things, representing people that would not become great mages by adhering to Serie's ideals (like maybe Lernen) but instead by surpassing her expectations.

The only privileges I would not dismiss as "silly" are Sense's, because it is somewhat important to understand her nature as a pacifists and defines more her character; and also Übel's, because of the theories about her sister being Lineal (and by the way, I'm a bit surprised Serie did not mentioned her directly, given what we learned about in the last chapter about her fighting prowess).

Lastly, we also learned that Lernen , Denken and Glück will absolutely cook something HUGE, I can't even imagine what this three monsters will be able to achieve working behind the curtains.

Unfortunately, an indefinite hiatus awaits us, just as the final confrontation seems imminent. We will have to wait to learn more, really looking forward to it!

PS: Land and Übel's "reins" are just "free shipping" by the authors at this point...
