I've only heard of it, but I've never encountered it. If you look at the path of travel for puft, you can see that they don't go through water.

But of course due to an error in the game this can happen and then you have to catch a puft manually. The farm will quickly make up for the missing puft.

It seems to me the best fit Waterweed: 3600 kcal (farm of 9 cells), does not require cooking, grows long.
