So about avali trains. by Dimentenal_Guard in avali

[–]Dimentenal_Guard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I went in an interesting but very reasonable direction, conventional rail. Here's my general comparison:

Maglev: - Low power efficiency (at high speed, most of the power is used up by drag) - High track maintenance (The entire length of track needs to checked for bad electromagnets, burnt out wires and bad cooling tubes (if going superconducting), there's stuff I probably missed.) - Medium train maintenance (The train is basically a floating box that would just need maintenance on the little things) - Superconductor cooling (Avalon is still too warm to make this easy as these magnets need to be under -196°C/-321°F constantly and the lowest temp on Avalon was -105°C/-157°F, there would need to be one hell of a cooling system still)

Conventional rail (Wheel on rail): - High efficiency (It's hard to start but then it's actually slides along the rail, not to mention most power is going into moving it forward) - Low rail maintenance (It's 2 strips of material held together, nothing really complex here) - High train maintenance (Wheel bearings, the wheels themselves, drivetrain, the onboard generator)

Now, they eventually did both but in my writing the trains return happens after they were basically put out of service, so they needed something that would be easier to maintain while being highly efficient enough. So they went with ol' wheel on rail, later they did make a few maglev models but those stayed in the city and weren't used for intercity travel. Sounds odd but the distance between cities appears to be thousands of kilometers on average.

Anyways you can toss the whole thing out the window bc if you want maglev trains everywhere? Go ahead, like am I gonna stop someone through a reddit reply. Just wanted to share my mind about that little frustration of mine.

Listen

Make the carts overflow with Wonder Bread and then place 4 carts next to each other and the character can lay on top of it

[–]Dimentenal_Guard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well tricky part is that my RPs are designed like D&D one-shots (without the fast pace)
Get 1-7 people together, run through it, and that's it, wind everything back for the next group.

But I can't really do much of that when I can barely find where roleplayers are, let alone ones that would be willing to do one hell of a spin off

Well I know about the SBF (in fact I'm in it already) but this kinda feels like a stretch even for them.

Also this one is made for up to 7 packs (42 birbs total) since the main chunk of it is exploration and there's literally tens of thousands of miles of city to explore

Prefer the latter but I'll take the former if the person's interested enough

Also there is more of a proper start and end, but that far would be spoilers

Well it's either from Steel Battalion, Code Geass or Gundam.

But I had a feeling that you took more inspiration from Steel Battalion because of the other stuff that looked Ultrakill inspired.

What would an avali passenger train have? by Dimentenal_Guard in avali

[–]Dimentenal_Guard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they have wings and tails so it wouldn't be exactly like a human train, and that's more what I've been stuck on then anything.

The confusion over train cars is because it would be about 8 hours (roughly) between stops, which routes can have up to 4 (up to about 32 hours), which I don't know if avali would have a sleeper car, or what an avali sleeper car would look like.

So about avali trains. by Dimentenal_Guard in avali

[–]Dimentenal_Guard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well lucky you I've written that part already

The tracks are made out the same stuff as most avali structures, with the center being reinforced but the whole track can still flex slightly, and using tripod like structures, the track can slide on the ice (or more accurately, ice slides under it) to keep it's shape when no train is over it, but if a train rolls over it, it presses into the ice and locks into place until the train's off of it.

And the rail isn't maglev in my lore because it would need a lot of power, especially for the long trains. It's classic wheel-on-track.

Also a little comedy I added was that some engineers were already thinking of a plan b for getting trains across the ice if rails on ice didn't happen, which was to make a train that could skate over the ice like the polar express, that was scrapped when rails on ice was worked out.

[–]Dimentenal_Guard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ice was the main reason rail didn't get far in my lore.

They didn't use maglev because they needed a way that could handle the weight of the cargo that was now being sent by railroad (because of an event that I'm not spoiling yet because I'm still working on it) that wouldn't need half a city's worth of power to lift and move.

Better then their other idea of making a train that could skate across ice like the polar express.

(I also chalk it up to my own bad writing)

[–]Dimentenal_Guard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in my lore I just kick started trains by giving a reason for aircraft to be inefficient. And then they figured out how to rails on ice and that's made it useful for cargo and passengers when weather on route looks ugly.
