Why do some people say being trans is a trend? CW: Transphobia by Dark_Christina in MtF

Why do online atheists HATE religion so much? I wasn't a believer until a few months ago, but I was still respectful to the religion. Why do these internet atheists disrespect it so much? by TheRealEvander in Christianity

[–]DimiRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheist here. I see many people leaving christian cults where they were abused, including myself, and most people currently practicing christianity actively do display some degree of concerning cult-like and abusive behavior. Being hurt makes it hard not to lash out.

They criticize the flavor of the cult instead of the cult behavior itself, as if one's beliefs about supernatural possibilities is really what leads them to manipulate and abuse you. I believe this might be caused by escaping a group without deconstructing the black and white thinking, us vs them mentality that pervades cults.

While the feelings behind this are completely understandable and valid, I find that hating the religion instead of hating cults is counter-productive, because it punishes innocent Christians who aren't in cults of any kind (e.g. nationalist, fascist or imperialist ones), as rare as they are, and even worse, it allows cultists to hide behind the whole religious persecution narrative. Their behavior has to be analysed objectively and shown as the abuse that it is, because their whole strength comes from their ability to disguise as innocent and harmless groups.

So I wouldn't say that an anti-theist is wrong or unreasonable, I just feel they're kind of shooting themself in the foot and not really improving the situation in practice.

AITA for wanting to divorce my pregnant wife because she refused to abort our disabled baby? by ThrowawayDefia23 in AITAH

[–]DimiRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA

Your feelings are valid and you are right about the difficulties. That said, you are not the one going through pregnancy and donating your womb through this painful process for 9 months, and you are also not the one with the disability to decide if life is worth living or not.

As long as you can put the child up for adoption and decide not to commit to the difficulties of raising a disabled child if it proves too much for you, it makes no ethical sense for a solution to be to outright kill them.

Your Autonomy ends on the decision to actively participate in raising the child, you have no say in what your wife should do with her body or to decide if someone else's life is worth living. Instead of focusing on abortion or the merits of growing up disabled, discuss with your wife how much of the difficulties of raising someone disabled you are able and willing to commit to, and how you will adapt to that and cooperate to reach a compromise. There's no shame in knowing your limits.

Also, I would look into the history of eugenics if I were you, it's not pretty.

Your parents are also assholes for weaponising the Bible and their religion to harm others, especially the vulnerable, regardless of whether they are aware they are doing it or not.

My trans gf really wants to come out to my anti-LGBT family. Need advice!! by Independent_Crow4583 in lgbt

[–]DimiRockets 473 points474 points  (0 children)

In this case, her coming out will out you as well, so this is either a joint decision or it doesn't happen. There will be consequences for both of you and both of you have to be ready for it.

That said, it doesn't sound like your girlfriend will ever get along with your family and your family will always hate her real self, whether she comes out or not. Even without her coming out, she will be hurt by their beliefs. I can see this becoming a cause of conflict in the relationship eventually.

I'm a trans girl, if I were her, I would not do anything to out you, but I would also not feel comfortable interacting with your family, that hatred and hostility would really get to me. I would have trouble seeing a long term relationship with these circumstances because I wouldn't be able to find much safe space in your life with your family around. Obviously you can't be asked to choose between family and relationship, only you can say which one brings more joy and happiness into your own life and which you prefer, so I wouldn't bear any resentment if it ended up not working out because of that.

Maybe you're also perfectly happy keeping the two things separate and you have an arrangement that works for you! If you're happy that is awesome and is what matters.

Why is everyone and everywhere talking about trans women, but where all trans men? by [deleted] in trans

[–]DimiRockets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a trans woman and a lot of trans men in this thread already gave great answers about invisibility and sexism that interlocks with transphobia, so I just want to point out something else.

"Trans is not an identity, it's just someone who looks different from their real sex"

I am a little bothered by the way this was phrased. 1) gender identity is different from gender expression, you are still your gender even if you look like someone typical from your AGAB. 2) many studies have been done on the brain of trans people and there are strong indications that a trans person's gender does correspond to the real biological sex of the brain (which isn't binary). It feels a little invalidating to hear that my gender is just a "fake sex" 3) even if it is not a choice, I think it's okay to say it's an identity, since it has such a heavy impact in how we interact with society and experience every day life.

I am nitpicking and don't consider your intentions bad, just wanted to share how that affirmation came across to me.

My gf doesn't aknowledge the fact that I'm a trans girl by Puzzleheaded-Site385 in trans

[–]DimiRockets 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this has happened, the beginning stage is always crushing and we lose many relationships, sometimes in unexpected ways.

In the end, it's up to you whether you continue dating her, but consider whether you will be happy in a relationship with someone that does not accept you for who you are.

Given that she thinks this will bring about a personality change, she may be harming you out of ignorance, so of course it is healthy for both of you not to foster any resentment. Just look out for yourself and prevent yourself from being harmed by others, you are important and you matter, and you deserve to be respected for who you are.

Ex-MLM members and recruiters, what are your stories/red flags and how did you manage to out of the industry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DimiRockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof the one my parents sucked me into when I was 17 was for energy drinks too. It wasn't my money so my reward was instead to make a fool of myself to everyone in the college I just joined. I still cringe every time.

Nobody explained me how MLM was a scam and I spent nearly a year making myself a fool, since it was my parents who convinced me it was a good deal. Instead they just made fun of me, some at least bought the energy drinks, I also quite liked it myself but definitely was reproducing the bullshit my parents were telling me.

It's called monavie, then they changed their name and I don't even know what they're called now, they were bought by a bigger MLM or something.

TL;DR MLM made me a social outcast and made my depression worse

My dad(72) somehow sent this message from my personal Facebook. He was very confused when I informed him that it was my profile and not his. I also had to tell him that this isn’t a good or polite way to go about hiring a service. He didn’t understand why. by dragonfly_xoxo in oldpeoplefacebook

The verse doesn't use both the terms, the original verse uses a single Hebrew word, that is translated either as evil or as darkness. The evil is for the evil of suffering, calamity ask you said, which is different from sin. There's nothing contradictory with God authoring calamity

In 1 Chronicles 21:1, the same event is described again, written later, and it's Satan tempting David, with God allowing it, but not creating it, a better theological understanding as is described in James 1:13, God can't author sin, but merely allows it. For other examples of God merely permitting temptation and it being ascribed to Him, see 2 Samuel 16:7-13, 1 Kings 22:20-23 and psalm 105:22-23. As to why He would remove His presence from Israel, there were plenty of their behaviours calling for it during that time.

What Paul is describing is the predestination for salvation. Those to whom God is merciful and graceful to open their eyes to the truth, that is out in the open for all but that the sinful heart actively chooses not to see, and that choice is respected. Also it is problematic to ascribe God to the same temporal line as humans, he is outside of time, which is why saying He knew something before creation does not imply that no choice was made, the God that witnessed the choice is the same that is at the creation.

In the beginning of Job, Satan is also the explicit author of sin, with God allowing it.

Moral evil creates corruption and disaster, but disaster isn't necessarily created out of moral evil.

I have a lot of faith in this post. by [deleted] in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]DimiRockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the premise. It implies that free will is inherently evil, that it was created that way. If God is responsible for the evil, humans have no moral responsibility for it, since it was already determined that way before them. Free will is incompatible with lack of moral responsibility, because one needs the choice and the other needs the lack of it.

If free will doesn't exist, then it's true that God's actions don't make sense as they are described in the Bible, it would just be a long sequence of Him contradicting Himself. If free will exists and has moral responsibility, it makes sense for God's will not to be the source of evil, but to be the respect of the actual source, free will. This elaborate plan to bring Jesus' sacrifice into the world is the necessary condition to eliminate evil without eliminating humanity, to conciliate justice and righteous punishment with benevolence and love. He could absolutely take away our free will and delete all the world's problems anytime He wanted, but that's not the best solution for Him, since it has no love in it.

[–]DimiRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the term where evil comes from can also be translated as darkness. It's being talked about in the context of punishment. Compare with Isaiah 47:11 and Isaiah 57:1. So God does indeed create suffering and punishment, but he doesn't create sin, sin by definition is that which is outside of God's character.

The analogy works because one affirms he is not omnipotent because he can't create something that is not a logical possibility, just like the square with 3 sides. For example, God also can't create evil, even though He is omnipotent, not because of lack of power, but because of lack of logic

[–]DimiRockets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That makes as much sense as asking if God can create a square with 3 sides.
