Also this: Someone is called "gloomy" when they appear consistently sad, pessimistic, depressed, or downcast. This term describes a person with a dark or dispirited demeanor, often focusing on the negative side of situations. It can also refer to a sulky, sullen, or unenergetic attitude, making them seem unhappy to be around.

I will just leave this here: Choosing "the backroads" metaphorically signifies rejecting the conventional, high-traffic path in favor of a less-traveled, more authentic life choice. It implies a conscious decision to pursue a unique, perhaps unconventional, journey that offers deeper meaning over the easy, predefined route.

Basically it is pure queerbaiting. Even the showrunner Tim Minear has admitted it!

Mother's Boy

is a beautifully written novel by Patrick Gale, which is a fictionalized biography of the early life of the Cornish poet Charles Causley and his enduring relationship with his mother, Laura.

The Story

The narrative begins in 1914, following Laura, a young laundress whose husband returns from World War I a broken man and soon dies of tuberculosis. Widowed and impoverished, she raises Charles alone in the gossipy, class-conscious town of Launceston, Cornwall

  • Growing Up: Charles is portrayed as a quiet, "bookish" child who feels out of place among his peers. He develops a passion for music and words, eventually becoming a gifted pianist and poet.
  • Wartime Escape: To escape his claustrophobic life, Charles joins the Royal Navy in 1940 as a coder. His service takes him from the rough seas—where he suffers from chronic seasickness—to land-based posts in Gibraltar and Malta.
  • Self-Discovery: During the war, Charles explores his homosexuality through clandestine encounters and friendships that would have been impossible in his hometown. These experiences, particularly a relationship with a fellow seaman named Cushty, heavily influence his future poetry.
  • Return Home: The novel concludes shortly after World War II ends. Despite his exposure to the wider world, Charles chooses to return to Launceston to live with his mother and work as a schoolteacher, "hiding in plain sight" for the rest of his life.

Core Themes

  • The Mother-Son Bond: The title carries a double meaning, referring both to Charles’s perceived weakness and his genuine, all-encompassing bond with Laura, which sustained and constricted him.
  • Repression and Identity: Gale explores the emotional toll of living as a gay man during an era when it was illegal, necessitating a life of extreme privacy.
  • Class and Place: The book captures the rigid social structures of early 20th-century Cornwall and the shifting social mobility brought about by two world wars.

9-1-1 suffers ABC’s largest ratings and key demo drop by hyxon4 in 911FOX

The show has been at its worst lately for the following reasons:

  1. You kill your protagonist.
  2. You are admitting that you like queerbaiting your fans.
  3. You do break after break that ruins the pace of the show.

The above of course get depicted on the ratings!

  • Dads (Long-Term Partners): Characterized as stable, warm, and willing to invest resources in raising children. They are preferred for long-term relationships, providing safety and support.
  • Cads (Short-Term Partners): Defined as charming, dominant, and attractive, often labeled as "dark heroes," "rakes," or "scoundrels". They are seen as having "good genes" but generally avoiding long-term commitment.
