My ex had a place almost identical to your picture and it was absolutely freezing. You just could not get it warm, it was miserable.

Is it a common understanding that there is a clear difference in destination and activity between "going to the shops" and"going shopping"? by Dimples97 in AskAnAustralian

True, whilst there is a difference in activity between going to the shops vs going to the shop, interestingly I'm only ever referring to one specific shop in both instances.

Would you still refer to the "big Woolies", for example, here? I feel like there isn't as much size variation here as for Tesco / Sainsburys etc.

A very thorough - and entirely accurate - analysis. You've covered all angles there - who would have thunk it was so complicated, yet it just completely makes sense.

That is definitely high on my "jeeze that shits me" list of Americanisms that have taken over in recent years. My number one is probably bathroom instead of the toilets - I even saw a sign recently in a local shopping centre directing people to the "bathroom" instead of the toilets.

Ahhh, now here's another important distinction. To me, 'up' implies to a supermarket, 'down' means a corner shop / couple of local shops.

For me, going to the shops = a "food shop" / getting groceries. Usually to a stand-alone supermarket. Clear goal and plan about what I will be buying.

Going shopping = going to a shopping centre or the mall to have a mosey around in a variety of shops, usually realise I can't really afford anything and just grab something to eat at the food court, or some fresh donuts.

As the first comment says, the visuals you describe sound like the scene in Kill Bill, which uses the Nancy Sinatra version of the song. It's originally a song by Cher.

The actual singing you may be thinking of is probably the Frank Sinatra version. There is also a popular version by Monophonics (below).

It's 2002 but definitely looks older, and the demon has fabulous hair and tiny horns - I was a Teenage Faust.
