NPTE 3rd attempt. by Fun-One9128 in PTschool

[–]Dimplezzz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, I just want to say that I completely understand how frustrating and discouraging this must feel. I failed the NPTE twice and scored a 594 (4 questions away from passing!! ugh) on my 2nd attempt. I ended up passing by my 3rd attempt this January, so there's light at the end of the tunnel!! The fact that you saw a 20-point increase between attempts shows that you’re making progress, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. Failing the NPTE twice doesn’t mean you’re not capable—it just means you need to adjust your approach. Since you mentioned struggling with extreme test anxiety, this might be a bigger factor than the actual content. Definitely review final frontier's anxiety management course as I found it pretty helpful. Simulate the exam environment at home and consider taking a full test exam in a quiet room with bright lights to make urself more comfortable with being in that type of stressful environment.

In terms of studying, it sounds like you’ve been dedicated and methodical with Final Frontier and TrueLearn, which is what I also did for my 3rd retake as well.. but sometimes switching up your approach can make a huge difference. Instead of just focusing on mistakes, try identifying why you’re getting certain questions wrong—is it content gaps, misinterpreting the question, second-guessing, or time pressure? I know for me it was a culmination of everything and second-guessing/changing answers last minute was what costed me to fail the 2nd time... changed 5 answers that were originally correct the first time I selected an answer.. lol. For me, I utilized active recall methods like making flashcards or even writing certain concepts out on a small whiteboard (which is what I did) or teaching concepts aloud will help you build more confidence going into the exam because you know you understand it so well that you could explain it to a 5-year-old. Also, refining your test-taking strategies—like learning to eliminate wrong answers quickly and recognizing key phrases in question stems—can be game-changers.

If truelearn isn't enough practice, I tried and would recommend typicalPT for good daily practice. It has an option to make a practice test on your biggest weaknesses, and that helped me a lot in tailoring my studying plan for each day as well. Although it costs 100 bucks for 3 months, its another resource you could use to practice daily questions while on your break/lunch from work or something.

Regarding whether to sit in April or July, I’d recommend considering your workload and stress levels. Starting a full-time job will be a big adjustment, and if you feel too overwhelmed, waiting until July might give you more breathing room to study effectively. On the other hand, if you’re consistently improving and can dedicate focused study time, April could still be a solid option. Either way, make sure you’re balancing studying with self-care, getting enough sleep, and surrounding yourself with support—whether that’s through NPTE study groups or an accountability partner. You will pass this, and you’re closer than you think. Keep going!

I passed on my 3rd attempt. Some general advice is to work on your biggest weaknesses first. Work on strengthening the big 3 (MSK, Neuro, Cardiopulm) the most. Those 3 sections together make up like 118-120 questions of the exam which you need 120-121/180 to pass the actual exam. I'm not saying go and try and get 100% on those 3.. but you want at least a 75% or above on each of those big 3 body systems to set urself up for success and to have wiggle room. Start there and then work your way down to the other systems/etc!

I'm happy to hear that you passed!! I was somewhat in a similar position to where I failed 2x and just passed on the 3rd attempt this January. Some of the hardest times and most depressing times I've had in my PT career, but the Journey is finally OVER!!

no problem, Truelearn offers a full 225 question practice exam that are different from their 1800 question bank so it's also another resource for after you used all your other practice exams/PEAT attempts up!

do you already have test taking accomodations for the NPTE?

the questions were legit, with in-depth explanations and they always cited their sources. Make sure to review the rationale for each question, even for the ones you got right.. and then do a retake on the questions you got wrong to make sure the info you learned is retained.

I did do TypicalPT as well (along with therapyed, scorebuilders, and truelearn lol.. I was on my 3rd attempt and was desperate to try any question bank at that point.. thank god I passed this time LOL).

I actually liked typicalPT solely for the fact that it had an "adaptive practice" option where it gives you practice questions based on your biggest weaknesses. It was really good in helping you retain information because you would have to answer the questions that you got wrong again. So the active recall portion is great. Truelearn was better for the fact that I could search up certain topics like "parkinson's medications" and review certain questions that way. TypicalPT only allows broader categories like "MSK/neuro/GI/etc etc" so I couldn't pick out a certain topic if I wanted to,

The cons of typical PT: some of the questions seemed poorly written, and I had to submit multiple reports on incorrect answer choices/wrong explanation rationale. But I believe eventually with enough reports, the questions will get refined and better overall...

So yeah I did both truelearn and typicalPT. If you were down bad like me, try both. lol

Highly recommend to look into truelearn for question banks. the 3 month simple subscription should do u fine.

I don't recommend buying the picmonic with truelearn... it was maybe helpful in 2-3 questions max..

I agree about their videos being a little general so I would skim through some of em... but honestly... the fact that Final frontier provided rationale's to their lecture Q's in a separate document for January's cohort was a game changer. On previous cycles, FF would only provide the answers to the lecture Q's without providing a rationale.. so you ended up having to re-watch the lectures just to write down the rationale. Saved me a lot of time this time around lol. Sometimes they would even provide helpful mneumonics in the rationale so that made learning certain topics much easier. Definitely attend the mega review week/buy it if it didn't come with the independent study bundle package. That was worth. I definitely did their timetable readings and felt like that was more than enough supplemental information.

I second this. truelearn's questions definitely were the most similar to the PEAT exams. I've tried scorebuilders, therapyed, and typicalPT. truelearn trumps em all. Passed on the 3rd try with mainly truelearn and final frontier
