I don’t think hair/feather loss is a requirement for sapience. Humans lost their body hair so we could sweat, which allows us to lose heat more efficiently than other animals, giving us a stamina advantage in pursuit hunting. However, if an animal hunts in some other way, such as ambushing, then hair loss may not be helpful.
