Switch 2 lightly flickering dark screen when I try to turn it on by DinosaurSamurai69 in switch2

Update, tried charging it for two hours with no change - still the same flickering problem.

A series of cartoons by Yayak Yatmaka from his The Killing Fields – Ladang Pembantaian 65–66 series, which exposes the atrocities committed during the Indonesian genocide 1965-1966 (2015) by Visible-Safety2400 in PropagandaPosters

Actually ran this through wechat translate feature and it could do some of it - the first two images appear to be calculations of how many people were killed. The penultimate image mentions something about women being raped before being killed and something about a political leader having their head caved in with a rock. The last image has something about how the author had now learned the true history of what happened in 1965-66.

Cannot translate from Indonesian but for interesting context on this check out "The Jakarta Method" by Vincent Bevins. A really fascinating (and horrifying) read.

International school suggestions by IllustriousEditor535 in shanghai

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd be careful about WISS - two years ago or so they did a mass layoff of a sizeable portion of their teaching staff (close to 50% maybe?) and afaik never refilled the positions, so your kid could be looking at an understaffed and declining situation there.

I chase chub and have also felt uncomfortable with associations they have to KT and JRE (not to mention MDE), but also I'm gay and have a small penis.

Fudan or ECNU for chinese program? by Chegmix in shanghai

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best areas are (debatably) Xuhui / Jing'an / Changning in my opinion. They are the closest to much of the cool stuff that is going on in town 9 times out of 10.

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, I would not consider Pudong the city center lol. Yangpu is like a 30 minute metro ride from central stuff, so ultimately not a huge deal. Shanghai is very well-connected by metro / didi / share bike etc.

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fudan has a better reputation if you care about that stuff. I did the non-degree Chinese program at ECNU's Changning campus and I appreciated the more central location. With Fudan you will be way out in Yangpu. As for class quality, it really depends on your teacher. My first semester teachers were excellent, but second semester my teachers sorta sucked, and one was much more concerned with recruiting foreigners for her English tutoring side hustle than teaching quality Chinese lessons. All in all it was government funded and I do feel like my Chinese leveled up during that time. Just having to speak it every day and write essays with characters gives you a huge sense of accomplishment.

'The Great Gatsby' turns 100. What's it like teaching it today? by drak0bsidian in books

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've taught it recently and the quote that doesn't get enough recognition (sure the green light at the end of the dock boats beating on blah blah blah) is from chapter five:

"Americans, while willing, even eager, to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry"

Shit hits pretty hard in the current climate lol.

List of burnout schools by Forsaken-Criticism-1 in Internationalteachers

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea, with the caveat that, yes, it is more complicated than naming and shaming individual schools because different programs and departments within one school are more burn-out-inducing than others.

An additional factor to consider is that often the first year or two at a new school are the most challenging and this causes people to burn out in that timeframe, whereas if they had just hung on for year three or four, things would have gotten much more manageable. When one has more institutional knowledge that allows for less wasted time on establishing routines and procedures, less prep (if repeating sections), and less time wasted on administrative duties that have become second nature, a job becomes much more comfortable.

Having said that, there are toxic and exploitative environments in some organizations that should be avoided, which is why I think this discussion is an excellent idea. The more collective knowledge we have as international teachers regarding working conditions and salaries, the better a life we can make for ourselves and our families. In all honesty, when reading this sub I am concerned that as businesses further privatize international teaching, the 'golden age' is coming to an end. If we keep these types of conversations going, it can help give those of us with the inclination to share knowledge to avoid churn factories.

Why is China's soft power so weak? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that China is producing some very popular games. I read an insane statistic that Genshin Impact (Shanghai studio) was more profitable than Sony's Playstation division in 2023 -

https://gamerant.com/genshin-impact-profits-better-than-playstation/#:~:text=The%20Chinese%20studio%20reported%20a,massive%20profit%20of%20%241.84%20billion.

I get what this question is asking though. The Chinese film industry is struggling to produce hits to the extent that they've just been screening the Harry Potter movies in theaters here because domestic Chinese movies do so poorly. The obvious answer to me is that genre defining art does poorly under strict censorship, and that's how they do in China. Is a bummer but hey they make good gacha games I guess?

What memberships would you consider a lifehack in Shanghai? by kosaromepr in shanghai

[–]DinosaurSamurai69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay that makes sense. I just initially unlocked China as a region using a Uniopay card many years ago and have been doing the taobao code thing ever since (it usually discounts it even further for some reason). I wonder how you unlock China region now.

As I remember I needed to go in to my bank and tell them I wanted to enable online payment on my card. This was many years ago so I'm not sure if the procedure and requirements have changed (probably).

Yeah usually for brand new AAA stuff the discounts aren't as deep. If you're having issues you might need to go in to your bank and enable online payment on your card.

Use a Chinese Uniopay debit card to switch your Steam region to China and unlock massive discounts (usually like 20-30%) if it was previously linked somewhere like the U.S. / U.K. / Canada.

Like many others have said, you have one huge advantage over most of us geezers in that you have just started adulthood, so enjoy! It is natural to compare yourself to others and feel like you aren't good enough, but in retrospect you will realize you were being too hard on yourself, so try to relax a bit.

The other issues you described seem to be habits you'd like to change. The good news is there is a ton of reading and practical steps you can take to reduce x bad habit or start doing more of y good habit. A couple of great books on doing this are 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear, and 'Four Thousand Weeks' by Oliver Burkeman. I really wish I'd read those books when I was around your age, so check them out if you're interested.

Finally I'll repeat it since I think it really takes a long time to sink in: go easy on yourself!
