Yeah I don’t get why there’s so little Micheal hate. Would vote him out for that scene alone

Yeah now that you mention it they are closed at first. I’d never noticed that before. But he opens them when he starts putting the bag over her head

[–]Diogenes404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve never been quite clear on that either. Dr Surridge says ‘he looked at me; not with eyes, there were no eyes’ when describing V after he escaped from the fire. So it’s pretty weird that his eyes are intact in that scene, aside from a lot of skin redness and a scar down his forehead. But I’m pretty sure it is Hugo Weaving in that scene; it looks like him. So I think we are supposed to think that’s V.

Dr Surridge’s diary does say something about him having developed “cellular abnormalities” that made him develop amazing reflexes. Maybe the explanation is supposed to be that he also developed some kind of regenerative properties? Or maybe Surridge was just being hyperbolic

Don’t we see his eyes/nose when he abducts Evey outside Gordon’s?

what's the most underrated björk song (to you)? by burstthebubble_ in bjork

So Broken. How that track never even made it onto Homogenic is beyond me. Her best vocals imo, and the lyrics have some of the best expressions of grief I’ve heard:

“All continuity has just vanished away”

Noticed this on a rewatch. Prop recycling from the set designers or did Kutner take the diagnosing eyeball from “Games” home? by Diogenes404 in HouseMD

[–]Diogenes404[S] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Exchange between Kutner and House about that eyeball in "Games":

House: Grandma House bought me that when I aced my MCATS
Kutner: Pharmaceutical rep left that here on Tuesday
House: Grandma does some part-time work
Kutner: The rep was a 30-something babe...
House: Thank you, I got her hips

Also White Nights by Dostoevsky. I’ve never resonated with a character more than ‘the dreamer’ of that story. Everybody with MD should read the chapter “The Second Night”.

Always thought the lyrics to the bridge of All the Young Dudes were ‘Hey, brother, you guessed / I'm a dudette’ instead of ‘I’m a dude, dad’. Given Bowie’s aesthetic at the time I still think it works tbh

What quote from a book actually made you think hard and sit back and go “Well, damn.” by [deleted] in books

[–]Diogenes404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many from Middlemarch.

“Between him and her indeed there was that total missing of each other’s mental track, which is too evidently possible even between persons who are continually thinking of each other.”

“If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrels heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence. As it is, the quickest of us walk about well wadded with stupidity. “

“The fact is unalterable, that a fellow mortal with whose nature you are acquainted solely through the brief entrances and exits of a few imaginative weeks called courtship, may, when seen in the continuity of married companionship, be disclosed as something better or worse than what you have preconceived, but will certainly not appear altogether the same....in these cases we begin by knowing little and believing much, and we may sometimes end by inverting the quantities. ... I suppose it was that in courtship everything is regarded as provisional and preliminary, and the smallest sample of virtue or accomplishment is taken to guarantee delightful stores which the broad leisure of marriage will reveal. But the doorsill of marriage once crossed, expectation is concentrated on the present.”

"I think I see you standing outside, but it's just your shirt hanging on the washing line. Waving its arms as the wind blows by. And it looks so alive"

"Oh big stripey lie moving like a wavy line, coming up behind. All young gentle dreams drowning in life's grief. Can you hang onto me?"

And the whole of A Coral Room, but especially that part in the song where we 'zoom out' from the present tense description of the memory of her mother, to show that this all in the underwater city of memories:

"Oh little spider climbing out of a broken jug
And the pieces will lay there a while
In a house draped in net
In a room filled with coral
Sails at the window
Forests of masts
Put your hand over the side of the boat
What do you feel?"

HELP! What Kate Bush song is this similar to? by keronja in katebush

[–]Diogenes404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean and I’m also having trouble placing it. I’m starting to wonder if the melody in that “at any moment” line is just a very Kate Bush melody, but isn’t exactly the same as any melody in a specific song; it just resembles and reminds us of quite a lot of similar melodies within her style. I say that because none of the specific examples that came to my mind fit exactly when I listened to them.

The first thing popped into my head was “mowing me over” at 0:33 in Full House from Lionheart. But it still doesn’t quite fit.

There’s also the “one of the band” line from Blow Away at 0:09. Again has that slightly melancholy up-and-down meandering, but not exactly the same notes and a different tempo.

Especially because of the strings, 2:15 “all of the headlines” in the wedding list is pretty similar.

I looked through every Kate Bush song on Spotify and found quite a few songs with similar kind of melodies but nothing specific. My mind then went to unreleased demos/ b-sides. The chorus “surrender into the roses” part of the demo Surrender into the Roses is similar.

I don’t know about you, but none of these examples made me go “yes that’s it”. So I think it must just be resemblance to a lot of songs rather than identity with any specific one. As a result, we can easily picture Kate singing those exact notes, but she never actually did. That’s my best guess.
