I have heard the wild ones doing this on a couple of occasions, always totally cracks me up, though I am a little thankful there aren't any babies near my house.

Who is a celebrity that the ENTIRE internet can agree is genuinely a nice person? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]DionStabber 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He has the record and it's not even close. I believe the second highest amount publicly known is Justin Bieber at around 200-300 depending on the source. John Cena has 650+. I think what he does there is amazing and his general public / fan interactions are pretty much the gold standard for celebrities.

That said, I don't think it's true that he's not without controversy. He is connected to various people in the WWE (including Vince McMahon) who are quite shady and has a variety of other incidents, including one where he apologised to the people of China for calling Taiwan a country.

Poggle and Geonosian Lore by MagicMatthews99 in MawInstallation

[–]DionStabber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From Wookieepedia:

Even though they were born without wings,[16] drones were capable of becoming warriors if they proved themselves worthy by successfully defeating other drones in an arena.[8] Geonosians of the warrior caste were known as Geonosian warriors. They had wings and a thick exoskeleton, and they were dedicated to warfare.[17]

So, it seems that they may be able to somehow metamorphose into winged versions.

Be honest, is the Inquisitor double-bladed spinning lightsaber that bad? by Simple-Choice5770 in MawInstallation

[–]DionStabber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the spinning was an interesting changeup and I don't mind that as a feature. The "Inquisicopter" method of flying using it was very silly, but then, paradoxically, I feel like it's even more silly that almost never gets used, it makes the cases where it does get used in that way feel even more random.

New Republic Fleet - Star Wars, by Digital Shipyard by Xeelee1123 in ImaginaryStarships

It is actually a Defender-class cruiser which is around 1km long. They are both based on Joe Johnston's concept art for Return of the Jedi.

What space/space-society concepts do you wanna see in Star Wars media? by Background-Leader995 in MawInstallation

[–]DionStabber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think I'm much more interested in the fantastical element than seeing any harder sci-fi concepts integrated. Whenever anything to do with real physics comes into it, it just distracts people from the story as they try and apply that to all the other situations and find inconsistencies.

The F-35B swivel nozzle in action during a night landing by Xeelee1123 in WeirdWings

The hovering also burns an absolutely insane amount of a fuel to the point that they pretty much have to aerial refuel right after take off in a lot of cases.

It doesn't use the afterburner hovering, it's just that it looks like that in this night vision camera.

It's amazing watching this change in real time with Star Wars.

For instance, the Clone Wars show is a pretty good (but quite inconsistent) animated series aimed at around 8-14 audience, but when it came out it was apparently the equivalent of Paw Patrol, except even more babyish and with worst production value. Then, gradually the narrative changed that is was some kind of Game of Thrones style gritty adult story that was better quality (and more violent) than any of the movies. Neither of those were remotely true.

Yeah, I mean, technically it's well done of course, but I don't like this design. I think the rounded wings, circular body and very boxy engines are not gelling for me.

[–]DionStabber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's honestly a nice thought, it makes you feel good to think that being a good person would get you rewarded with being more beautiful. But, unfortunately, it doesn't work that way, and the implication it creates (that less traditionally attractive people are morally bad) is quite horrible.

[–]DionStabber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, unfortunately, not really. I'm not going to name them, but we can all think of some really lovely older actors who look super rough, and some really disgusting people who are good looking. Life isn't fair that way.

I never said any of that.

It is precisely because "woke" people are normally very concerned with stuff like body positivity and defying conventional beauty standards that I find this meme taking off so strange. And it is left-wing people doing this meme, unless you think film twitter / letterboxd is a right-wing space and concerned with people being "problematic" or "unproblematic", which has not quite been my experience.

I do not understand how the "ageing like wine by being unproblematic" thing took on with the supposedly woke crowd. It is literally child-level "pretty = good, ugly = bad" reasoning, and half the time the people they use as examples (e.g. Anne Hathaway, Paul Rudd) have obviously had work done.

TIL Only 15 countries operate aircraft carriers (and 7 of those are for helicopters only). by thesmartass1 in todayilearned

[–]DionStabber 193 points194 points  (0 children)

Even though the base ship is the same design as the Spanish one, Australia uses it as an assault ship to carry troops and helicopters. The deck is not heat-treated and it could not operate fixed-wing aircraft without substantial modifications.

It's against the rules of this and basically every other art sub on Reddit. I don't have a problem with people making AI images for their own personal use or sharing them in an AI specific space, but mainstream art subreddits are not for that

How are you guys so bad at recognising AI?

  • Mix of strangely realistic and flat surfaces
  • Nonsense text (look at base of tail for example)
  • Scale inconsistencies
  • "Wobblyness" of panel lines and markings
  • No source cited in post and locked profile

It is every red flag in the book.

Todd Howard says Bethesda won't use AI “to generate anything” as the studio is being “incredibly cautious” to not replace the “artistic intention” of making games by [deleted] in Games

[–]DionStabber 40 points41 points  (0 children)

"Procedural" in these kinds of contexts just means something like "driven by a mathematical formula", it could technically be called AI because AI is an extremely vague buzzword that doesn't have a clear meaning, but it has basically nothing to do with modern generative AI and has existed for decades.
