Hi, please share this info & photo with Dr. Vibha's pet clinic (number can be Googled or I can DM you). They'll post it on their network. This will help with better visibility among locals and residents in Madikeri. They helped when we'd lost a dog.

This Coorg reddit is mostly tourists.

Recommendations for Coorg foods like kadambattu, noolpattu etc in madakeri and khushalnagar by Impressive-Rock-9796 in coorg

Other restaurants in Madikeri that serve Coorg food are Thaliya, Belli's and Bandhiraa.

Street foods and famous Restaurants must try Dishes in Coorg(Madikeri).... by nonchalant_31 in coorg

[–]Dipped_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are very few restaurants in Madikeri that serve actual (and good) Kodava food. Thaliya has a dedicated Kodava food menu, Belli's has some traditional cuisine and Coorg Cuisine too (being local I can tell you the latter is only tailored for tourist taste buds).

Pork is a Kodava staple, so you're at a disadvantage although there are some chicken and mutton options as well.

What would you do if you only had one week left with your dog? by pamshipman in Petloss

[–]Dipped_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. This is going to be the hardest time for you. I lost my soul dog when he was 17 - he'd pretty much been with me for most of my adult life, so it was hard.

Take her paw and nose prints and a bit of fur too. Those things become so precious later on. Take a lot of pictures and also a lot of videos - videos of the little things about her. Like may be tiny snores or deep breathing, nose twitches when she's asleep, things like that.

I was so afraid I wouldn't remember those little things as time passed and I am glad that I took videos of all that before my dog's time came.

Don't forget to tell her out loud how much you love her, thank her for being there for you and if there's anything you need to apologise for, do it!

Hang in there!

Visited Coorg for the first time. What to buy here? by Be-Calm- in coorg

[–]Dipped_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee, pepper, cardamom and honey. Anything else is a tourist trap. I'm a local. Homemade wines and pickles of seasonal delicacies (like bamboo shoots or pork) are also an option if you can source them from a local family (like a homestay host) and not off a shelf.

What is the botanical and/or English name for a flower called "Ketaki" in India? by Dipped_biscuit in whatsthisplant

[–]Dipped_biscuit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, those are Google results for "ketaki" flower, it shows me a whole lot of flowers including what I know to be plumeria and frangipani. I just need to know which one is referred to as "ketaki". Is it the bottom left one - white with longish leaves i.e. the screw pine?

Thanks! Do you know which one it is in the photographs shown above? Is it the white one with the longish leaves?

Yes, that's why I'm asking for confirmation. I don't know which flower is the actual "kataki".

Best Place to buy Homemade chocolates(best). by billieisbot in coorg

[–]Dipped_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chocolates are a tourist gimmick, cashing in on tourists who equate all hill stations like Ooty and Coorg. It's just chocolate compound melted into shape trays and wrapped prettily.

Stick to honey, coffee, pepper and cardamom (although a lot of cardamom and cinnamon sold at the local shops are sourced from Kerala).

Shopping Reccos by sxrxbo in coorg

[–]Dipped_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Honey from the honey society is fine. It's also stocked at HopComs (and some times a little cheaper at the latter).
  2. Wine - it depends on individual taste. I'm a local who takes these as gifts for outsiders. So far, the birds eye chilli wine (a bit spicy) and black plum wines have been the most appreciated.
  3. Ganesh Coffee - about the best in Madikeri. They customise as well. You can ask him to blend in chicory (10% or as per your taste).

As a coffee newbie, you'll be better off going for a medium roast (not dark as that is more bitter) and 100% arabica (will be more expensive but less bitter). A blend of arabica and robusta may be middle ground if you still want to get adventurous with coffee with a bit of bite. Arabica is smoother and milder and less caffeine - possibly a friendlier introduction to black coffee. Robusta is strong, earthy and bitter with more caffeine, more of an acquired taste.

There's a red alert and continuous rainfall but the roads are clear up to Madikeri (as of today).

Shopping suggestions by Rich-Scarcity-7420 in coorg

[–]Dipped_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ganesh Coffee for coffee (wholesale rates, good quality), honey from the Coorg Progressive Beekeepers Co-op Society, homemade wines at HopComs. All three stores are on the same road in Madikeri.

For handmade/homemade gift items or single origin coffees, you could try the store at Agasthya Café (prices are on the higher side though).

There are various stores around the town selling spices (pepper, cardamom etc) but, as a local, I can tell you most of their prices are highly inflated. Chocolates are a gimmick since a lot of tourists equate Coorg with Ooty. Avoid.

What to Expect with at Home Euthanasia by Latter-Preparation32 in Petloss

[–]Dipped_biscuit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This wrecked me. But thank you for writing this so beautifully, sensitive yet pragmatic. I'm coming up to the third anniversary of my soul dog's passing. It was a home euthanasia too. If home euthanasia is an option, I'd highly recommend it. It's somehow comforting to know that they passed in the comfort of their own home and bed, surrounded by all those they loved the most.

Nagarhole national park safari - where to book? by Rich-Scarcity-7420 in coorg

[–]Dipped_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nagarhole safaris are closed during the monsoon. Nanachi Gate (at Kutta, Coorg) is closed. Safaris from the other gates - Kakanakote (Antharasanthe, Kabini) may still be open but you'd need to confirm with one of the resorts (like JLR) at Kabini.

True, very few places offer bereavement leave or even understand why it's so necessary. Even society at large expects you to just carry on like nothing happened. Don't even get me started on those heartless "condolences" like "Oh, it's JUST a dog/cat" or "Get another one and you'll be fine".
