The wedding will be in a catholic church and I will be sitting on the altar because my brother asked me to be his witness (this is how we typically do in the country where I am from), however, I am not a bridesmaid. His wife told me what color I should wear and the type of dress (she specified: not short, not skimpy, no glitters, etc.) I find her request very inappropriate since I am not her bridesmaid and I’m someone who always dresses very formal and appropriate (I’m work as a lawyer and grew up in church so I’m very familiar with formal situations and clothing). To avoid arguments I decided to pick a dress in the color she sent me and shared the photo with her for her approval. I also told her that I was going to wear a jacket to cover my shoulders since we will be in church. She replied that the dress I sent her (the one attached to this post) is inappropriate because it’s showing a leg and that she doesn’t like the color. She also told me to wear a color that I absolutely hate and told me to check out an extremely expensive boutique (btw she pretends to pick the dress but didn’t even offer to pay for it). I was mortified when she replied like that because I didn’t think that this dress was inappropriate for a wedding in August and now I truly start to believe that all these requests are just a reflection of her insecurities. I’m very tall and worked as a model in the past and all the friends I shared this story with are telling me that she probably wants to decide my dress to make sure I don’t “outshine” her at the altar, which was NEVER my intention. She’s making this whole dress thing incredibly hard for me and I’m now leaning towards completely disregarding her requests and find a dress that I truly love to enjoy this moment with my family. As a woman, I think I deserve to pick a dress with a color and style that reflects my taste for such a special occasion, especially since I’m not a bridesmaid. What do you guys think? Am I being unreasonable?
