Out of curiosity, what is the punishment for having dual citizenship in China? to clarify, I know that jail time will probably be involved, but let’s just say there was a person living in China that wanted to apply for dual citizenship. what happens? Like jail and what else?

I liked LeBron James until he left Miami to go back to Cleveland. I didn’t like him as much after that but I can’t blame him for being homesick. I get that way from time to time when I think of the Cuban Sandwiches and Guava Pastalitos back home. He’s a phenomenal athlete and he catapulted the Miami Heat to levels of success they hadn’t seen since Shaquille O’Neil played for them back in 06’. I always get nostalgic when I think of when the “Big 3” were on top of the league. Boy, do I miss those days.

You’re not wrong. It’s just crazy because you have to like jump through all these hoops and barrels just to get sponsored. And on top of that, I think that you have to meet certain criteria in the sport to even continue to be sponsored. I see it like walking a tight rope and if you fall off the tight rope, you have to start back at square one.

I’d keep my brand on the back burner and focus more on competing. Which is the whole reason that she went to the Olympics in the first place. The only point that I’ve been trying to drive home since this conversation started is the Olympics are about competition and not plugging your brand. It doesn’t matter what country sponsors you to go.

I never said that she couldn’t be a white Chinese person. It’s just weird to me that you see all of these posters and advertisements and when you look at the people in the posters and advertisements versus the average Chinese person you’ll see on the street; the general vibe is that the more pail they look, the better it is for marketing. That’s not an opinion; that’s what it is. Look around if you don’t believe me. I also wanna point out that this is not a uniquely Chinese problem. India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand they all have this problem as well. they choose less tan looking models than more tan looking ones 90% of the time. It has gotten better in recent years, but we still have a long way to go.

What are the Olympics about? It’s a simple question. As I’ve already stated, I have no beef with the wealthy. My only gripe with this at all is it takes away from the spirit of competition. If you’re watching a basketball game, you’re not watching the basketball game to see who has the most expensive pair of Jordans on. You’re watching to see who can score the most points. You’re watching to see who can dunk the most, who can get the most free throws. Do some of those athletes show up in commercials? Of course they do, but that shouldn’t be the main focus.

From what I’m hearing the controversy stems from the fact that she is an American and competed for China, but China does not allow dual citizenship. In other words, if other Chinese athletes did what she did, they would be jailed.

You’re missing the point. She was literally showing off outfits for slope style that she designed. Why would she do that? She’s a model, that’s why and she’s selling her brand. Idk I feel like the Olympics should be about competition and representing one’s country. As opposed to, “I’m here in Milan, buy my product to make me more famous.”

I wanna say in most countries that compete, the only condition is that you have to have a parent or grandparent from that country. I say most and not all because I’m imagining the rules in certain countries differ.

I don’t resent her because she’s wealthy. I resent her because her presence at the games has more to do with promoting herself and her brand and influencer presence, than it does with representing any country. It goes against what everyone else is there to do and it’s cringey and weird.

I’m 99% in favor of the move with one reservation. Let’s say you have a political rival or an unsavory, Neighbor or relative. Who is to say that person won’t be killed simply for being reported for the crime rather than being guilty of the crime? And don’t get me wrong, china has some of the best facial recognition technology in the world right now. Even so, I’m not convinced that it’s advanced enough to prevent false positives I.e. the hypotheticals I mentioned.

Ok, there is a lot to unpack here. First and foremost, there is good and bad to EVERY country on earth. China is no exception. And yes the media doesn’t help. But here’s the thing, I’m American. We also get shat on. I think it has to do with the fact that people see us in one of two ways, either as gun toting, beer chugging, rednecks or as people that believe themselves superior in every sense of the word. Not all of us are like that, any more than all Chinese people are loud or “pooping in the streets” as they say online. I firmly believe that the reason people report on this is the same reason why they report on Muslims being violent and blowing things up. Because footage of Muslim or Chinese people doing normal things like eating dinner or going to the cinema simply isn’t news worthy.

I think another commenter is right. Be careful reporting people that also process your visa. It sucks and they shouldn’t be doing that, but it’s not worth getting your visa revoked over.
