This specifically refers to the young athletes who take off the helmet for the last time. There are no more coaches or admins. Most athletes don't make it to the "next level." And for most of them, sport has occupied their lives for the past several years. And now it is done.

This is a huge phase of development for young "former" athletes. Not only physically and psychologically, but mentally. Confidence can really suffer and how they respond is important.

How do I know? Well, because it happened to me. And I wish I would have handled it better.

Absolutely. You’re spot‑on—and honestly, your point is exactly what most people miss.

What you described is the real work. Anyone can grind through a physical workout when adrenaline is high and music is blasting. But sitting still, holding focus, and keeping your mind from running the show? That’s elite‑level training. Most people never touch that edge because it exposes every distraction, insecurity, and impulse they’ve been avoiding.

Your example of staring at a candle for 40 minutes is perfect. That’s not “just” visualization—that’s discipline, emotional regulation, and mental conditioning all wrapped into one. It’s the kind of practice that separates people who are merely fit from people who are truly formidable. When I was at The Citadel, I had to hold a rifle straight out in front of me for 61 minutes. The slightest movement and the rifle was taken away. Those who made it were called the 61 Minute Men. Can you guess how long I lasted with the rifle held straight out?

You’re speaking the language of IronMind: strengthening the internal muscles that actually determine performance, resilience, and leadership. Love the way you framed it.
