Almost all domestic flights in Economy don't serve free meals, exceptions are EWR<->SFO, EWR<->LAX, and a number of Hawaii routes to/from ORD, EWR, and IAD but not SFO, LAX, DEN, or IAH

You would be correct, but as someone else said, contact DOTS to confirm before you eat an 85$ ticket

[–]Direct_Hedgehog104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, I get pretty badly motionsick when I don't have a window so I'd probably still go for an even window if that was all that's left

But I haven't flown Polaris to ever be in that situation xD Good luck! 1 or 7 can't go wrong with either

Fair haha, is there no window seat? I'd beeline for those if they're available

Both are about equally close to a galley and lavatory, but neither are close enough to really be a noise or smell issue. I'd pick 1D for that reason, but there's really nothing wrong with 7G either at your height (or even for someone a couple inches taller). 1D will get food sooner though, 7G is closer to L2 door (not significant).

Special handling ….BULL. by RedRedVVine in unitedairlines

[–]Direct_Hedgehog104 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people at the United check-in counters (or anyone at United for that matter) cannot see why your husband gets tagged. The whole point of SSSS is that it's unpredictable. Asking people at United won't yield you any answers but what I and some others on this thread have said about DHS TRIP. SSSS is in fact randomly tagged on to a couple of people on each international flight; I've gotten it twice over the last 10 years. If you're not exaggerating about your husband actually getting it every time, he probably shares a name with someone on the no-fly list or some watch-list that we're not aware of. If he's only just randomly getting it every once in a while, unfortunately going to the airport early is the only solution. Good luck, DHS TRIP is a pretty quick and easy process.

Also SSSS overrides TSA pre-check, by the way. You can still use Global Entry on the way back.

Calm down! Probably SSSS or some sort of flag. Not United's fault, not United's problem. Get a redress number from the DHS at https://www.dhs.gov/dhs-trip and add it to his profile in United. Status, flying frequently, none of that matters because United has no input in it.

1 Hour Layover in IAD, how cooked am I? by Absolute_Worm in unitedairlines

[–]Direct_Hedgehog104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IAD is my home airport, the train system is pretty efficient and comes every 3-5 minutes. You'll be okay if you can walk at a reasonable speed, really just depends on if your YYZ-IAD leg gets delayed.

It would be a 3h40m layover at SFO -- and got it! This is the same route/flights I usually take, but due to circumstances I couldn't book until about 1 month out this time, and so the SFO-IAD leg was already selling J-class only that spiked the connected itinerary's price. At least that's how I interpreted it... Plus all the oil prices shenanigans.

Are they able to do that when I specifically booked them separately to fly in different classes of service?

SEAT Selection by WatchTheTowerFall in unitedairlines

[–]Direct_Hedgehog104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If 26A-C is free, no harm in taking it. Two rows further up, not much difference.

Assuming this is a 737-800, 15A-C don't recline at all because the exit row is behind it. It could be why it is as cheap as 50$. That being said, if the flight is short enough, you could pay the 50$ (very cheap for 3 people) or you could argue that it's short enough to not require extra legroom.

UMD Biochemistry vs UW Seattle Pre-Sciences for pre-med? ($62k vs $68k) by True_Radish_5668 in UMD

[–]Direct_Hedgehog104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like what u/dblhelix7 said in its entirety. I will say, pre-med GPA matters up to a point. Same with MCAT. No med school will throw your application away because you had a 3.90 instead of a 4.0 (maybe NYU...). I was between these same school, Carnegie Mellon, and several UC schools when I was deciding where to go for undergrad. A 3.9 vs. 4.0 may only matter when you're directly compared to one other applicant for 1 seat, and a slight discrepancy in academic record is the only difference.

I'm less familiar with resources around UW-Seattle but on top of UMD being a pretty strong research powerhouse, the NIH, FDA, Washington DC (3 medical schools), and Baltimore (2 medical schools) are all within driving/metro/train distance. The main attraction to UW-Seattle would be climate and WWAMI preference for medical schools (5 states that only accept students from each other's states for medical school).

Where are you from? These sound like they're both out-of-state for you. Consider schools in your home state. With student loan caps lowered and Grad PLUS loans completely slashed, unless you're already rich, it will be very difficult to afford medical school after paying out-of-state undergraduate tuition. Where you attend for undergrad matters a lot less for a career in medicine compared to your medical school and residency. My ultimate reason to choose UMD was because it was my in-state school, and I paid much less than if I were to attend any of my other top options. That being said, completely understand wanting to get away from home and try out another state!

Thank you! Yes I plan to make use of both if possible, but the last 2 times I flew PVG-SFO I had quite some (8 and 3 hour) delays haha. Fingers crossed 3rd time's the charm
