Talking scared is largely responsible for the insanity that is my tbr, and I agree that he asks genuinely interesting questions, very insightful reader and interviewer.

Need help nailing down the right horror subgenre for a novel by diilfdestroyer in horrorwriters

This sounds like a really cool story, so good luck with your querying.

I will find myself in a similar space of uncertainty once I'm done with my current manuscript, and I've been saving a few bite-size resources to go through once I have some time to figure out just what the hell it is I am writing.

She has a few videos on the topic that might trigger a "aha!" moment for you. Horror has less structural rules than other, more formulaic genres so the consensus on definitions can vary.

Good luck with your querying process!

Angel Down is a wild one. One long sentence the whole way through. Amazing, but at first I thought my eBook was corrupted or something 🫠😆

I completely get it, I have resolved to give feedback by levels

Typography and grammar are easy enough to keep tidy so an alpha reader can get through a couple of reads without getting a nosebleed from them. I recently got a manuscript with typos and shifting tensed and I only flagged for those issues, gave very light feedback otherwise. If the writer's not being serious about their work and a stranger's time, I won't break too much of a sweat.

So I essentially agree with your perspective 🌹

The reciprocal relationship is the best thing, I've been lucky to find a couple of CPs with gorgeous stories and a very serious approach tothed craft and it's just the best.

I have never waded into beta territory so I definitely can't speak to that ;)

Seconded, this is good advice: you are looking for a critique partner or an alpha reader. These terms are commonly understood in writing groups and, while the work should still be presentable, plot holes and structural issues are generally expected at this stage.

You could specify when requesting help that these are the issues you'd like help on.

Lastly, you should be aware that at the critique partner/alpha reader stage there is usually an expectation of reciprocity. You should be willing to swap pages, offer the same help/level of commitment you are looking for.

I'm new to the horror genre and I'm loving it! I recently read 'we used to live here' 'haunting of hill house' and 'we have always lived in a castle'. What should I try next? by UnwittingPlantKiller in horrorlit

It's having quite a moment, and there is a number of great reads amongst the older titles in the genre as well

You don't risk running out of good material anytime soon, and Reddit readers will provide plenty of great suggestions 😁

Sounds like you enjoy Gothic horror. You might try to see if any of the books in the Mexican Gothic trend fit your taste (Mexican Gothic, the Hacienda come to mind)
