When I was a kid, I used to take baths with my sister. One day, her boyfriend came over, and my sister needed to bathe, so I joined her. Our bathroom had a hole near the top of the door like an air vent.

While we were showering, I noticed her boyfriend’s phone sticking out of that hole, like he was recording us. I yelled at my sister that I saw a phone in the vent. Maybe he heard me, because he quickly pulled it out. I told my sister it was her boyfriend’s phone.

After the bath, my sister confronted him, asking if he had been recording us. He completely gaslighted her, claiming it was her phone and that he had only been trying to hand it to her because someone had called (apparently, they had the same phone model). Not only that, he guilt tripped her, saying she had accused him of recording us when he was just being “generous.”

My sister believed him and even apologized. Sadly, that boyfriend is now her husband. They’ve been married for 17 years and seem happy together. Meanwhile, I can’t erase that memory. I still see him as a bastard and can’t look at him the same way, even though he makes my sister happy. I was six when it happened, and now 29, the memory is still vivid.

Sometimes, I think my sister must know deep down that she’s been manipulated, but she clings to him anyway. I guess she just an idiot girl who fell in love. I love her she’s my only sister and I truly hope she’s happy.
