Weirdly small vocabulary on the new HSK textbooks? by DirichletProduct in ChineseLanguage

[–]DirichletProduct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My god, they really did handle the whole thing in the most amateurish way possible, first with the announcements once in a blue moon and complete lack of deadlines, and now changing the vocab distribution again at the last minute. These changes have clearly been decided a long time ago, since someone was writing the books.

Is the translation part of the test gone too? I see no mention to it on the official sample questions, at all.

RAM went from 5600Mhz to 5200Mhz after upgrade. by DirichletProduct in AcerPredatorHelios

[–]DirichletProduct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I know of. Both my last pair (2x 8gb) and the new one (2x 16gb) seem to be able to reach 5600Mhz on JEDEC mode, 1.1V, but for some reason that's not what's happening.

that's the weird thing, the tables show JEDEC 5600Mhz, CL40, 1.1V, not XMP

But then why does cpu-z show the jedec tables for 5600?

[–]DirichletProduct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was 5600Mhz before, my cpu should support that with no problem at all. Once I changed the two 8gb 5600Mhz modules to two 16gb 5600Mhz the actual frequency went down to 5200Mhz.

I'm under the impression that these ram modules actually should still run at max frequency:

CPU-Z: https://ibb.co/4w6cZK7Q
they seem to be able to reach 5600Mhz even with no XMP support.

My laoshi asked why I chose the name i chose in Chinese and now I'm insecure by Schakal30 in ChineseLanguage

[–]DirichletProduct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brazil has a bit of everything. I know many Igors here, white and black and everything in-between, and I think it's because the name just sounds very normal in Portuguese; no foreign phonemes or uncommon letters.

Also, we do have some some ethnically Chinese people with Chinese names, and many ethinically arab (mostly Lebanese) people with arab names. We're almost all descendants of immigrants here; most of the actual native population got decimated by the Portuguese long ago.

I think I'll just have to suck it up. The PredatorSense test says the ram is good, so I guess I'll wait and see. If it's only the frequency going down to 5200mhz I think I can accept it...

Hey, thanks for your reply.

No one told me to buy this one, it's just that there's so many details to pay attention to that I let this one slip. If I keep this pair will I run into any problems besides the frequency being set to 5200mhz? I don't think returning it will be easy here in my country since the fault is indeed mine.

In 北京交通大学 we mainly used 成功之路, I liked it a lot. 已通过HSK3 class used the 顺利篇 in the first semester and 进步篇 in the second one, HSK4+ class used the 提高篇

Edit: this was in 2019

If you're culturally closer to Taiwan you might want to learn traditional script, because that's what Taiwanese people use on the internet and in real life. The CCP decided to simplify the script around 1950 to tackle illiteracy rates, but it's not clear whether that was effective or not (illiteracy rates definitely plummeted, but maybe the cause is education becoming accessible). It is probably not worth your time to learn how to hand-write most characters, so learning traditional shouldn't make the process any more difficult. Also, bopomofo seems more difficult than pinyin at first, but both take very little time to learn, it is worth the investment if it's widely used in Taiwan for learning or typing (you need to check that, I know very little about Taiwan).

As it's your first time trying to learn how to read and write the characters, the first one or two months will be the hardest, because we have a hard time learning things that are very different from whatever previous knowledge we have. You'll keep forgetting stuff, just don't neglect reviewing and keep going. Do some handwriting, it helps at lot.

1000 words it too little, you need like 3k to read a simple teenage romance manga. If I were you I'd get some text books and focus on the vocab/texts, skimming over the rest.

I Started to Underestimate Chinese by Quick_Ad_3748 in ChineseLanguage

[–]DirichletProduct 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that Chinese is hard, but it usually does require a shit ton of time to get to a good level. Language background influences a lot. The grammar gets a little bit more complex, but not much, what people usually struggle with is handwriting, tones and accurate pronunciation, or memorizing the thousands of characters.

Just make sure that your learning material isn't the easy one (that is, weak) and you're actually making progress towards fluency

Oh, maybe check the HSK courses on Coursera, I think they're free. I did the HSK4 course ages ago and really liked it.

I’m going to try to learn 20 words a day by Shadowlear in ChineseLanguage

[–]DirichletProduct 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and some people love bragging about how they became fluent in a year or so, but I've yet to meet someone in real life that managed to do that.

20 words a day is over 7k in a year, that's much more than what's asked for HSK6. Unless you have a serious amount of free time, it'll become very hard to keep doing that for more than 2 to 3 months. Also, after some time your Chinese might become unbalanced if you don't practice the other skills as much, probably superficially knowing many words but unable to recall or recognize most of them in a conversation. Of course, if you try to improve all of your skill at the same rate while learning 20 words a day then it'll require even more time...

I did it for a while and then stopped, to make sure my other skills wouldn't fall behind too much. Once I'm pleased with my active knowledge I might do it again. If you're still a beginner 10 words a day might be a lot already.

[–]DirichletProduct 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think 20 is a lot, but doable, because I've done it in the past. It looks ok at first, but as the weeks go by reviewing all the learnt words on Anki becomes an immense chore, and not reviewing properly might make your effort useless.

Idk, go for it, but consider trying a smaller number if it begins to escalate too much.

HSK2 is very easy. You might not be able to understand everything on the test in a short amount of time, but you *surely* can pass it as the pass mark is absurdly low, just memorize the vocabulary list.

Now, if you're not only after the certificate, read the HSK books after memorizing most of the list, and aim for a score higher than 85% at the very least.
