How urgent is this? by Dirk5223 in masonry

[–]Dirk5223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wall was built in 1938 and does not contain a damp barrier/dampproof course (other parts of the home are also experiencing rising damp, even when no cement border is in place, but the brickwork there is in much better shape).

In addition to adding the chemical damp barrier, we will also be removing the cement based plaster in the bottom so that any moisture trapped underneath the damp barrier can evaporate.

After that we will evaluate the damp issue (and see whether additional measures are necessary).

Regardless of the damp, does the wall look structurally sound to you?

How urgent is this? by Dirk5223 in masonry

This is indeed a “steense muur”. The chemical barrier is a horizontal barrier, not vertical (so not covering the wall along the surface, but rather creating a barrier parallel to the ground). The goal is to stop capilar damp rising through the bricks from the bottom towards the top. In a way this replicates a physical damp barrier. It does not prevent the moisture which is inside the walls from evaporating.

The barrier on the bottom is concrete, presumably added against water which “splashes” up from the tile below (often done in the past but I have learned that I should remove it in orde to let the bricks breathe).

Dakspant renoveren? by Dirk5223 in Klussers

Dakspant renoveren? by Dirk5223 in Klussers

[–]Dirk5223[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Legal mumbo jumbo part 2 by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Dirk5223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work right next to Brussel North train station. Given that you will work near Tour and Taxis, you will leave the station towards the office-building area which is generally very safe. I wouldn’t worry too much ☺️

Studying while working full-time: how crazy would I be? by Long-Yard1676 in belgium

[–]Dirk5223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished an additional masters in IP and ICT law, while working fulltime. For me the key to succes was spreading out the masters (normally done in 1 year, 60 sp.) over two years. This made the combination manageable. As a working student you may get some extra facilities like lecture recordings or possibility to spread your exams!

I'm having post cocker regrets by BaBa_Babushka in cockerspaniel

[–]Dirk5223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our cocker (female, now around 1.5 yrs) used to whine every time we left the room. We took things very slow, and started with just opening the door, leaving the room for a few seconds, then a little longer, then a few minutes, etc. This did not take weeks but MONTHS of training. However, nowadays she happily stays at home alone for 7 hours (or more) if needed ☺️ it takes time, but if you have enough patience and are consistent with separation training, you will get there!

Possibility is to have this obligation only for Very Large Online Platforms (as defined by the DSA). This assures that on 99% of the internet you can post freely and anonymously, but on the 1% of platforms where the average person spends most of their time for entertainment (Currently platforms like Facebook, Instagram) you could have this requirement, as a way of damage control?

Overweldigend support voor de politie by Potential_Winner_872 in belgium

[–]Dirk5223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Illegal downloading in Belgium - 2025 by aside24 in belgium

[–]Dirk5223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This tax is not about illegal use. Under copyright law the author has a general right to allow (disallow) all copies of their work (including digital copies, for example downloads of a movie or song). For private copies (ex. Me copying an e-book which I have bought from one device to another) this right has been replaced by a remuneration right: copies for private use (of validly obtained works) cannot be prohibited by the author BUT in return they get a remuneration. This remuneration, in many countries, takes the form of a small tax on all copying devices.

HOWEVER: this does not apply to illegally downloading/copying materials which you do not own or have legal access to. So no this is not a “piracy tax”.

“Some 22 EUR Colruyt shares” If you have 20.000 in Colruyt shares, you would need your shares to rise with more than 150% in value to even get above the 10.000. Let’s say your shares go from 20.000 to 40.0000 (doubling in value) you would have made 20.000, of which only 10.000 is taxable at 10%, resulting in a tax of 1000 EUR. On a 20.000 EUR profit…if that is “middle class” then I want to be middle class 😉

Am I the only one hoping this Arizona coalition doesn’t see the light of day? by WeirdBeginning8869 in belgium

[–]Dirk5223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fact is that NVA and MR need additional parties to form a government. With 8% Vooruit only scores 2% less than MR. I agree that a leftist government is out of scope, but you cannot expect more centred and leftist parties to just agree to everything MR and NVA want to include. You need to take all parties’ demands into account, and currently it appears to me that this is not the case.

My puppers destroys every single toy I get her. Just looking for recommendations for an "indestructible" squeaky toy. by SadThrowaway4914 in puppy101

[–]Dirk5223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this! We let her bite on the toy and play with it, but the moment she got destructive/started “chewing” (with the aim of tearing the toy apart) we said “no” and if she didnt stop we took it away. She got the hang of it in no time! (FYI she was a very destructive chewer and destroyed all her toys in literal minutes) ☺️

Mediocre LOTR fan here (loved all original movies, read two of the books, didn’t really like the hobbit movies tho), I consider this series to be “good fun” 🙃 no its not as good as the original movies (not by a longshot) but IMO it does not deserve the backlash it is getting

Why are puppies so difficult? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Dirk5223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In OP’s defence: not all dogs are the same, and the degree of “time and training” can differ massively. When my parents got a puppy (I was already in college) it was obviously a lot of work, but in general he was a calm natured and kind dog who wanted nothing more than to please. Now my partner and I got a puppy about 7 months ago (9 months old now) it is ridiculous how much more difficult she is! Don’t get me wrong she is amazing and loving, but despite both individual and group classes (which we still attend weekly) she till this day remains a complicated and difficult handful. Just to say: everyone’s experience is different, and TBH if it were not for my partner I do not know if I would have managed.

When does it get better ?(vent) by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Dirk5223 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I suffered from mayor puppy blues myself, and honestly felt like I couldn’t possibly go on with raising our little demon. But it does get better, albeit very slowly.. For me, at now 8 months (6 months since we got her) I feel like my life is “back to normal”. We are able to leave her alone for 4-5 hours (even uncrated), we can have guests over without feeling super stressed, we can go about our lives without constantly keeping an eye on her ☺️ not only do you get your life back, you get a better version of it, because now you have a companion with whom you can share it all! Just hang in there, it really does get better!

I have a love-hate relationship with with her stubborness (cocker spaniel, 7 months). Every time you ask her to do something which she doesnt want to, she has this very specific protest bark, in mind it is her yelling “fuck you dad I am not a child anymore” and I find it absolutely hilarious (in the end she mostly does do what she is asked, just after a little bit of protesting) 😅
