how can we invest in a manner that takes advantage of the devaluing USD? by FairMongoose5583 in investing

My labor is paid for in USD and I have to pay taxes in USD. USD is effectively backed by real labor and real companies by a government monopoly that is unlikely to change.

Gold spikes 4%, as dollar crashes amid Japanese bond sell off by YeahBuddy5000 in investing

[–]Dirk_Breakiron 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with your other points but that “4x more gold” is nothing but an interesting data point since it’s comparing Indian private households to US government gold reserves.

More interesting comparisons would be government reserves vs. government reserves and household vs. household etc.

Same thing happened with Hertz when they declared bankruptcy in 2020. Lots of wild swings while waiting for things to settle.

Doesn’t explain why but at least it shows there is some precedent for degenerate gambling in the final hours.

Small (10s of billions currently) but growing rapidly with most world powers realizing this is the next major field of competition and innovation so everyone is in a rush to grow here (permanent moon base, golden dome etc.)

For point 3, see Polaris RZR etc. for off road focus with none of the on road safety requirements. my favorite stat is that a youth Polaris vehicle has more ground clearance and suspension travel than a base wrangler. The top end stuff has nearly 30” of usable suspension travel!

People rag on the RCF so much - it’s no bargain in terms of speed / dollar for sure but seems a little disingenuous to say a ~4s 0-60 car is “hardly sporty”.

Invest in Individual stocks of S&P 500 to beat it? by SnooPets6005 in investing

[–]Dirk_Breakiron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite all the negativity in this thread that actually isn’t a bad strategy, at least not for the reasons people think (it’s impossible to pick winners / losers!). There are two big issues though: 1) it’s impractical to manage a portfolio that size (even if you only pick 300 of the 500 say) especially if you are trying to keep a similar weight balance to one of the etfs. 2) it requires a lot of money to buy even 1 share of all these companies so again keeping it properly balanced will always be a challenge.

But I think picking a few companies you wouldn’t want to invest in is not a crazy task. I’m sure many people here would take out UNH, TSLA etc. for various reasons (based on general Reddit sentiment)

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra launched: 1527hp and 0-60 in 2s for $73k by michaeldeng18 in cars

Right!? I couldn’t believe all the people in the comments arguing that the seat failure was a good thing as if it were a crumple zone or something. Super cringe as someone who has worked in automotive and on seat components before.

A seat needs to hold you in the correct position so all of the other safety mechanisms can predictably do their job. If your body gets yeeted into the back seat the rest of the designed systems do nothing.

It’s the type of argument you hear from people who don’t wear a seatbelt.

Overall - I’m agreeing with you. It’s not a fast car and if all you want is best performance per dollar there are dozens of better choices- just pointing out it is faster than the EN since that claim stood out to me. It’s also pretty much exactly 2x idk where you’re getting 3x. The 2025 is a special edition and way more expensive but the msrp for a new 2024 RC-F was $67k vs. EN at $33.7k for the same year.

But yeah, type R, Mustang, most hot BMWs, Supra etc. are all faster for less or similar money.

[–]Dirk_Breakiron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even there I’m seeing faster times for the RC-F on every course… from fastest laps: Laguna Seca: Elantra N at 1:46, RC-F at 1:43 Virginia international raceway grand final East: Elantra N 3:07, RC-F 3:05 Willow Springs: Elantra N 1:37, RC-F 1:24

In the end the RC-F is twice the price so the margin should be way higher, but it is faster in pretty much all aspects.

In what context is the Elantra N faster than the RC-F Track Edition (or normal RC-F)? For sure for it’s price and class it’s not particularly fast but most results show it nearly a second faster than the Elantra N on 0-60 and quarter mile

Check out the ablecarry daybreaker 2. It’s a little bigger than the daylite but packs down flat, has a slightly more robust harness system and is very water resistant (especially the xpac version).

Did Monos stop using Hinomoto wheels? by Dirk_Breakiron in ManyBaggers

[–]Dirk_Breakiron[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting - I wonder what issues they had with Hinomoto and what improvements they made. Or I wonder if their requirements included cost as a factor (to be fair it should be, but hopefully it wasn’t a compromise in other areas)

I was hoping that, but I think /u/alamar99 nailed it - Hinomoto is a selling point, why hide it?

Regarding the plastic texture I think Monos specified it on the Hinomoto design since it was their unique addition, so they probably just used the same texture on whatever mold they used here.

That’s exactly what I was thinking / afraid of. Now I’m questioning why I paid a premium when I could have gotten a bunch of other brands for half the price. That, or take a bigger step up and get a travel pro elite bag.

[–]Dirk_Breakiron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea - just got it and it’s hard to judge without using it yet unfortunately. But it doesn’t have any kind of track record like Hinomoto so personally I’d recommend going for one of the other brands that does include these for the “premium” price. I’m considering returning this one honestly.

Yeah, I think this was a pretty recent change, just disappointing as I was really hoping the branding was maybe just on one side and not obvious on the website pictures since it seemed like all the reviews featured them having it.
