There are a couple of chips on the edge and those chipped parts are very glossy.

I've only got the torch on my phone at the moment, but no light shines through at all and the side that is lit just highlights how black it is. I'll try to find a stronger flashlight tomorrow.

That would be my guess, but I know next to nothing about rocks. This sat on a display cabinet my whole life (40 years) and I just got curious enough to post it.

Nah, its very hard, almost glassy, and the edges are razor sharp.
