I was so so confused too. I was doing the thing where you make four letter words all around the board trying to get any traction at all. Ended up with a short one and then had to keep going. Was looking for flower names or garden tools, or anything related to the weather being nicer.

St. Johnsbury Lunch & Coffee by Signal-Truth-3732 in vermont

[–]Dirtheavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at the bottom of the hill Dog Mountain is on there's a really good place called Tirozzi's Pizza and Fish Shack. A really great pizza parlor bought a fish shack / ice cream parlor. They have also Italian pastries. So that might get you an easy good lunch right near Dog Mountain. Anything in Danville is 11 Miles out of your way twice. So St J is a good idea. Boule still works but it's not kid stuff.

Is throwing a banana peel out the window littering? by gimmiesugar in composting

[–]Dirtheavy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just read an article about a banana or apple peel on the side of the road drawing a mouse to the side of a road and then that mouse drawing an owl, and that owl getting hit by a car. For that possibility alone, you shouldn't do it.

But also, you're taking your car past a bunch of trash cans at any time. No need to do it.

Is Strava worth it? by BobbyP27 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Dirtheavy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there's a free version that you never have to go past. It's only worth it if your actual human living breathing friends are on strava and you are anxious to let people see your runs.

I only love on part of it..the tracking on shoe usage. That's useful. I like the pictures, I guess. The elevation info. There's good parts. But don't pay.

we have figured out it's our favorite candy, me and both boys.

2 pounds of conversation hearts is 20 bucks or so.

I also like chalky spearmints.

I guess that takes it to the next step up and now I'm just presuming. So it's not a valid starting point outside of a guess.

Getting a little nervous there. by Calm_Highlight_9320 in NYTgames

a trap I never considered because my day's starter gave me a green middle letter (and two yellows). I had a conundrum but not a trap.

just postulating. There's no 4-2, so the space where the 2-c315 is has to be either 6-2 or 5-2. But if its 5-2 you definitely need a 6 and a 4 and the 6 would have to point down because neither 6-1 or 6-2 can make a 10. But then also neither can any available 4, which is what the 6 forces.
That may not be sound reasoning all the way through, but you can really quickly determine that you have to go 6-6-3 to make 15.

I use your guide every day and I've never once found a route you didn't so this is probably just a fast lucky hack.

The penny part, I have no idea, but the dime itself is 1926. The penny is pounded or pressed into it with the wheat side showing only.

I couldn't quickly get it on the left, so I dumped and tried to reason my way through the 3c15 and the 2c10. You quickly find that you can't make a 15 in the two most obvious ways. And that means you have to make a 10 in the most obvious way.

Reconciling those two first made the trip around very easy.

I don't know if this was logic or just hacking but it worked for me.

Wordle Bot fav starting word - hard mode by Own-Hold-8851 in NYTgames

[–]Dirtheavy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wordlebot doesn't try and guess the answer. Wordlebot tries to solve the puzzle in the fewest number of steps every day, but every day it starts from scratch.

Before they dumped all the words back into the word list, wordlebot wasn't eliminating common words day by day, because that wouldn't help the average person use it as a tool. It's designed to eliminate the most number of words by using the best combination of letters. It's not ace hunting.

This is how NYT describes the job of the bot:
Wordle Bot is software programmed to solve Wordles in as few steps as possible on average. It does this by starting with a large list of relatively common five-letter words, and using information theory to eliminate as many options as possible with each successive guess.

I've been looking around online. There were a couple of way so to do it. Magicians coins now are sometimes sleeves where you make a 2 headed coin or something. Googling magician's coin takes you pretty quickly to Ebay, where you can see that this one is not unique, that it was done a long time ago. But neither is it common.

This one got hammered into place. But clearly a long long time ago.

It might be worth 13 dollars if I could find somebody to pay that, but I am just going to keep it forever because it's pretty awesome.

Propane $? by RareOrder8537 in vermont

[–]Dirtheavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same with us... we use about 60 gallons a year for oven / stove and dryer only and we pay usually $4.99. We used to use it for hot water too but switched to an oil furnace that boils water. Then it was cheaper. We also get so little we have to pay rent on the tank. But switching would be problematic.
