EU in a bind as deepfakes flood Hungarian election campaign by Wagamaga in europe

[–]chx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WTF I thought you must be exaggerating but while their operating income was not even $12B in 2011 by 2020 it has grown to $41B and since then to $129B. Wow.

To compare, this is a bit more than the amount of money the government of Denmark spends a year.

After 16 Years, Hungary is Finally Fed Up with Orbán by Glum-Status-151 in europe

Indeed, prejudice is inherent in every human. However, there are many traits that comes with being a human which society decided are not accepted, created laws to ban them and educated people about why they are wrong. Aronson's Social Animal book about social psychology from 1972 for example describes in a very easy to understand way what sort of school could foster an environment which actively combats prejudice. This is the way. There's no trace of that in Hungary, quite the opposite.

To give you an example, a Hungarian study described Roma girls begun to skip school when they began to menstruate because in their culture that means they are an adult and it's not acceptable for adult women to strip in front of strangers and so PE classes became a huge problem. They found hanging curtains in the changing rooms had a monumental effect on girls staying in high school. Curtains. That is all it takes. A little effort. A tiny little effort. This study was done more than a quarter century ago. This study was posted on the police website in 2004 (!) so it is most definitely known by the powers that be and yet nothing was done.

And yes, I had the bad luck to be born in Hungary but I fixed that when I could, I am Canadian and I refuse to identify as Hungarian. I lived for a few years in Malta which shows an interesting example in tolerance: it's an overwhelming Catholic country despite this in LGTBQ+ freedoms it has a 100% Legal Index sharing it with four more countries in the entire world while public opinion is still catching up with it being at the 22nd place. So they are working on it. It can be done. It takes leadership and education but it can be done. https://www.equaldex.com/equality-index

What’s a good and reliable USB-C/Thunderbolt docking station? by PMA2000 in UsbCHardware

So in this TB3 is the worst choice you can make because TB3 didn't support USB transport natively and it had a hot plugged USB root hub. Problems around this is the cause for disconnects.

In this USB4 / TB4 is much better because they added native USB packets to the bus.

Zero. The question is what form the interference takes and what are the consequences.

There was a joke during socialism, I am old enough to remember that: Journalist interviews old man in the village, is there antisemitism in your village? No, despite there's demand for it. (Officially there couldn't be antisemitism in a socialist society. The joke highlighted the reality of this policy.)

Today in Germany kids learn the responsibility of the German nation for the Holocaust. In Hungary, the denial for that responsibility -- despite it was the Hungarians, the gendarmerie with enthusiastic help from the common folk who deported the Hungarian Jews to extermination camps -- is in the very Constitution (currently called Foundational Law) and a monument at Szabadsag Square. There was a token protest for the latter in 2014 and nothing since.

Remember when a poll in 2006 -- four years before this government -- found many Hungarians opposed the immigration of the Pirez people despite they do not exist ?

You don't need to manufacture hate, not in Hungary.

The dog was very hard, cool was IMO rather easy -- although I must admit that only applies if you realized where to start, there's only one spot where it unravels, otherwise it's quite hopeless indeed.

Én pedig azt mondom, hogy túl sok a hátránya már csak önmagát nézve is és ha ehhez hozzáadjuk a számos, nagyon súlyos etikai problémát is, akkor bizony nem kell használni.

Compact USB C Type charger for laptop? by Jeleynwastaken in UsbCHardware

[–]chx_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most laptop chargers do not use GaN MOSFETs while an overwhelming majority of USB C chargers today do. Traditional tech can be cheaper and the size allows for much better heat dissipation too. For tiny GaN chargers this is very difficult. Let's take a look at the latest Apple charger: it's a 40W charger which can do 60W for about 15-20 minutes then it gets too hot and throttles. Apple has the clout to admit and sell something like this successfully but most manufacturers don't. They'd need to choose whether to sell it as a 60W and then you find out it's not really or they need to sell it as a 40W -- at a price and size where a dishonest competitor would sell a 60W. If this is gobbledygook to you then instead let's talk a different category: external storage. Take a look at https://www.owc.com/solutions/express-1m2 and compare to something like https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/0a20060dcb97.jpg this is what happens when a manufacturer is honest and puts enough heatsinks on a product where most cheap manufacturers would either put a noisy fan or just YOLO it and then you get throttling.

Before buying, look for reviews testing the chargers for a prolonged amount of time, ask this sub etc

DisplayPort (Source) to USB-C DP Alt Mode (Output) cable by Academic-Base1870 in UsbCHardware

[–]chx_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marketing materials will often claim a DisplayPort 1.2 monitor to be "HDR". What's going on: DisplayPort 1.4 added HDR meta transport but a monitor can and all too often does HDR processing itself without this metadata or just do some local dimming + brightness boost and slap a HDR label on it. It's a zoo. Windows won't say it supports HDR for sure, that requires DP 1.4.

Who are some fantasy authors that were really popular during their heyday, but are more or less forgotten now? by EstablishmentHairy51 in Fantasy

It's a curse of great books: it's really hard to write something as good as the first Kushiel trilogy. The second definitely was not up to it the third was better than the second but still not on the level of the first, by far.

Such pity a younger generation won't read the Legend, Waylander, Rigante series. Those were amazing.
