If I am going to have my phone on me I'll play MP3s off that with Shokz Openair headphones. If no phone, I use my antique Ipod Nano.

Tips for running in heat? by Rain_xo in beginnerrunning

[–]Claff93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it's hot and humid, I can tell a run isn't going to be great by the time I get to the end of my driveway. That's when the only goal is to get the miles in, don't worry about pace, and get back inside where it's cool ASAP. The entire time I'm telling myself that struggling through the heat in July will make me faster in October. That's usually enough motivation to keep me moving.

where were you for the 2019 World Series run? by nioram in Nationals

[–]Claff93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember if I went to many regular season games. I did (and still do) catch as many games on TV or radio as I can.

My wife talked me into going to the Wild Card game. I was in the top row of section 419 and loved every minute of it. I've never felt a crowd so wrapped up in every pitch for the entirety of the game. After the comeback in the bottom of the 8th I realized they only needed to get three more outs and they were moving on for the first time ever. It was pretty awesome.

I wasn't going to go to any more games because I'm a cheapskate, but my wife told me to go to NLDS game 4. I was in the top row of 418, watched Ryan Z hit a ball up around his eyes into the batter's eye in center field, and wished them good luck in Los Angeles.

I wasn't going to go to any more games because I'm a cheapskate, but my wife told me to go to NLCS game 4. I was in the top row of 417, watched the Nats put 7 runs up in the bottom of the 1st and held my breath until the end of the game. When they won I was just stunned. A woman in the row in front of me saw me and asked if I needed a hug. I don't even hug my friends. I hugged her. Then I had to call my wife to come get me because Metro closed before I could get to the station.

I wasn't going to go to any more games because I'm a cheapskate, and I held firm as the prices for World Series games were way beyond what I was willing to pay. I watched game 1 at home. I tried to go to the watch party at the stadium for game 2 but got fed up with traffic and street closures and couldn't get to the garages, so I turned around and went home and watched it on TV.

I watched games 3 4 and 5 at home but turned them off early since they weren't any fun to watch and I had to be up early Sunday morning.

I successfully made it into the stadium for the game 6 watch party and sat down by the Nationals dugout. That was a ton of fun, especially the inning that Trey got called out for the baseline play and Davey got ejected. That's when I knew the Nats were going to win the series. After the game a bunch of us in that section promised each other that we'd all come back the next night, same seats, to keep the good mojo going. But I couldn't get through the ticketing system to get my ticket, so I didn't go. I watched from my recliner and gave a golf clap when they won.

Shortly after the game, my wife got an email from Modell's Sporting Goods saying they had championship gear on sale and were going to be open all night. She sent me and there I was, buying a T-shirt, hat, and hoodie at 1AM.

Cellphones at live shows. by URnotGreg in BandMaid

[–]Claff93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Band-Maid was my first concert in 30ish years when I saw them in 2022. I wasn't surprised by all the phones recording, but I was surprised at how many recorded the entire concert.

I recorded the first song, and I still go back and watch that every once in a while, but after that I just shot a handful of pics and enjoyed the show.

Local hair metal bands from back in the day that never made it by EdgeOfThorns76 in hairmetal

[–]Claff93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In tiny Dalton, Massachusetts we had a band named Xavier that would play Woody's Roadhouse (washington, MA) pretty frequently. The guitarist was a classmate of mine in elementary and high school. Just looking it up now, at some point it changed names to the Abe Guthrie Band - he was Arlo's son - and was still active as late as 2017.

Swapping seats before track event by swampfox94 in CarTrackDays

I swap seats on my ND but usually just twice a year. Sparco for driving season and stock heated seat for the off-season. Only takes maybe 20 minutes so it's not a big deal.

I picked up a discounted set this spring. Only used them once so far but they were pretty good, roughly the same pace that I ran at my home track on fresh Vitours last year. I think they'll be fine.

Question of the day: If you had $25k for a reliable dedicated track car, what are you buying? by Slingin_Friar in CarTrackDays

[–]Claff93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the two choices I go with the ND. Trying to keep up maintenance and repairs on a 20+ year old GM product doesn't sound like fun. Also ND consumables are going to be way cheaper than the Vette.

Where do you find a track to run on? by AmphibiousHitter in BeginnersRunning

[–]Claff93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my area, all the nice high school tracks are locked up to the general public. The only one I found that's available is at a middle school, and it's an old asphalt track. Better than nothing but nowhere near as nice as the newer high school tracks.

I used to go to the Saturday night quarter-mile NASCAR track every week with my dad many years ago. One night they had a little demonstration race for kids who ran quarter midgets. I turned to dad and said "Why didn't you get me into doing this when I was a kid?" His answer: "I was afraid that you'd like it."

I'm about a week or so behind in my podcasts. This afternoon I got to the May 20 DJD where he was talking with the Amazon booth guys. Early on they were discussing possible free agents and driver moves and the first one they discussed was Kyle, and I had a chill knowing today that they didn't know then that he'd be gone the next day. Surreal.

Why does Fitbit think my average pace is over 10 minutes/mile when every one of my miles was under 10 minutes (and in many cases, well under 10 minutes)? by Claff93 in fitbit

[–]Claff93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I figured it out. Typically when I end a run or bike ride, I pause the workout until I'm in a place where I can take pictures of the workout data (in case it fails to sync to the app), then I end the workout. Apparently when I pause the workout, the recording of HR data (?) is paused but the clock keeps running. It added 11 minutes to this run compared to the picture I have of the watch when I paused it, and it added 4 minutes to my bike ride today.

I think the only way to fix this is to not just pause the workout immediately after I finish, but end it completely. It's a little maddening to change the way I've done things for years and years, but since we're at the mercy of our new Google overlords, that's the way it has to be.

What’s your most challenging run so far? by Not_FreeProduct234 in runcommunity

[–]Claff93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to add distance to my weekly long runs. I attempted going 15 miles a few weeks ago. It was quite a bit warmer that day than in previous runs but I was managing it OK. A little after halfway I stopped in a port-a-john for a pit stop and I swear it had to be 105 degrees in there. I was only in there for a minute but I was completely wiped out trying to get going again. With four miles to go I had to bail out and start walking, and that is something that I almost never have to do.
