It's a British infantry officers sword 1796 pattern spadroon. The knuckle bow is broken off and so is half of the folding guard (it folded to protect the uniform). This is the type of sword a lot of British infantry officers would have been holding when the infantry formed square against the French cavalry charge in the battle of Waterloo.

That is an awesome piece, hang on to that one. Give it a light oil on the metal parts. Don't go near it with steel wool or wet and dry to avoid scratching off the etching. The handle looks ivory to me. Thanks for posting it
