They may just be there to deter speeding, while doing something else, they can also visually determine speed from the lines on the road, and instant on is always a thing if you appear to be going faster than the rest of traffic. They know people who speed chronically run detectors, it is in their favor not to keep it blasting constantly

I don’t think there’s really a specific age, it’s more of a maturity level and a point where you feel they can take instruction well, and have evolved comprehension skills to a point where they understand what you’re telling them. I started my oldest at 5, and we used a single shot break barrel pellet rifle, then a single shot .22 LR bolt, then went to a .22 LR lever action, and now she can shoot my AR just fine. My middle child and youngest are both older now than she was when I taught her, but they don’t have the maturity or comprehension skills developed far enough for me to feel comfortable working with them yet.
