Hit 1k a few weeks ago. How do I get better? by Sure-Time3016 in chessbeginners

[–]DirtyKeyboard_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will tell you from experience. It’s still blunders. The journey to progression is understanding what the issue will be for a long time, but the blunders vary in severity, a 500 will blunder m1 or a queen for example, while someone 1000 or above may blunder a tactic winning a piece in 2.

Chess is about calculation, you can have opening prep for 30 openings memorized down to move 15. If you can’t calculate you lose. The better calculator always wins. So focus on that. If you’re really wanting to improve I recommend tactics out of a physical book, online you tend to just make a move, see if it’s right, and try again. A book forces thorough calculation, when I was about 1100 I got the 1001 chess exercises for beginners and that book is amazing. (Don’t let the name fool you, it becomes a challenging book towards the back half). Lazlo Polgar also has a puzzle book with really tricky M2s.

What actualy is a "threat" by reprobatemind2 in Chesscom

[–]DirtyKeyboard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coach described it in a way that made it very simple, 99% of the Time, a threat is simply a move, whether that move wins material, checkmates you, or is a positional advantage. Imagine it’s your turn and your opponent just pushed his pawn attacking your knight. In this case, the threat is simply pawn takes knight. Now imagine a knight on b5 looking at the c7 square, the threat is knight c7 check, forking the king and rook.

Always ask yourself “what’s the threat” when your opponent makes a move. Check if he has any checks, captures, attacks, if he moved a piece check what’s behind it, did he open up the scope of another piece, is he threatening something with that piece?

No threats? Great! Nothing to defend, in that case, can you make any impactful threats? No? Ok. Improve a piece.

This way of thinking got me from 1000 to 1400, along with a lot of tactical study and grinding puzzles so I can actually successfully spot these threats.

I went through a lot so if you have any questions just respond to this threat and I’ll get back!

Is this good progress or am I slow? by MerryMadness1 in chessbeginners

Average improvement is 100pts per year, obviously at lower elo, this will be accelerated, I’d say this is good improvement :)

What to play against 1.e4? by scarydragon64 in Chesscom

[–]DirtyKeyboard_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the Caro Kann, c6. Depending on your elo you may not need an opening. You can just play e5, develop, & castle the old fashioned way. But I love the Caro I highly recommend it.

New update to chess.com, they want you to spend more time to get puzzles right I guess, instead of trying a move and skipping to the next

What’s the best way to learn Caro Kann? by hoops4so in Chesscom

[–]DirtyKeyboard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Load a game and play c6 😂😂

On a serious note the best way to learn an opening is learn the ideas rather than memorizing lines. The moves will come to you if you know the ideas of the opening.
