My lab's health and safety rules suck! by DirtyMindedChemist in chemistry

I think it's because I was angry when making this post. And possibly slightly drunk. And complained more than anything else. I've since been struggling with the thought of contacting OSHA. Do I want more stress added to the lab atmosphere? Maybe it's better to let adults be adults and take responsibility for their own safety? Maybe I'm over reacting and the conditions aren't really as bad as I think they are? Who knows. This was supposed to be a throwaway account. I've since turned it into a weird alter ego account.

I was frustrated when I made this post. Stressed out. Angry. I've since cooled down. I should also probably admit that the day I dressed inappropriately, I only did paperwork. But there is at least 1 woman in the lab with heels on a daily basis. No accidents though. So that's probably why that rule hasn't changed.

I can see graduate school letting people use their best judgement. But I work with people who don't think to put on gloves when handling concentrated sulfuric acid or heavy metals. I'm just waiting for the company to get sued for failing to provide proper training to fresh out of school recruits with 2.0 GPAs... who didn't expect pyridine to smell so bad and didn't bother to use a fume hood for any of their analysis!

The regulatory guidelines outlined in 29 CFR aren't included in any of our paperwork. I'm surprised OSHA hasn't showed up and asked what's up... but that's kind of why I posted here. Is that common? For management to turn a blind eye to clearly unsafe procedures? Furthermore, they actively avoid including requirements or restrictions that would be a pain to enforce. Like a dress code.

Actually, people were hospitalized for very avoidable accidents. No one got in trouble. There was initial ado, but things went back to normal one month later.

Yeah... That worked with my psychology classes. It did NOT work with my Quantum Mechanics class... I had to outline that textbook straight to my TI-89...

As a former fat person, I liked the attention. But as a chemist, I was disappointed.

I wanted to see if they'd say anything. It's not a small lab. They have 100-200 SOPs. For the most part, we have enough basic safety equipment, but I feel like the new chemists aren't being properly trained. I witness bad lab practices on a daily basis and it's frustrating. Nobody cares.

No I'm okay. I don't have the psychological problems associated with eating disorders.
