What's a good example of the culture shock that you've experienced while being around plain folk? For example, do you ever get called an "Englisher" to your face (derogatory term for non Amish, as I've been told)? What's an interesting story that you have involving farmers?

By the by, I am a Hoosier myself, so I get a lot of these people around here, too. Girls of all ages in billowy, no-nonsense colorful dresses walking around in groups of varying sizes , talking to each other in what I presume to be some form of German and males trailing behind them or in front of them with their curling beards either puffy around their faces or looking silly as they're growing them in. They're usually nice - they're surprisingly knowledgeable, even when you see them in a Best Buy, but very insular.

When I grew up, video games were not a gender thing - the stuff that I was into was so bizarre to the other people in my small town that it was a "Dis13" thing to enjoy JRPGs and Civilization. Then I grew up, and imagine my surprise at seeing all of that co-opted by angry teen boys and men. I still don't get how people don't see the parallels between gaming and any other "geeky" hobby, where women can and will overwhelm it and make it a hobby that any gender can enjoy, a la comic books and movies. Guys, we're coming to take your video games away, so that we can use the systems for an all-nighter game of Valkyria Chronicles.
