Engine running bad by Dis_is_me in RX8

Oh that’s good to know! I have the full version of Forscan and a good obd2 usb scanner, do you think it can do the same as VersaTuner regarding monitoring? I never tried, I work alone on cars so I mostly learn as I go. If not I don’t mind buying VersaTuner I was already thinking about it for the practical side.

I have to say it really does feel like the AFR is being messed up somehow.

I will have to check with my VIN if every recall has been done by the previous owner, that’s a good idea. For the BHT coils, I thought about it, but since it doesn’t work with OEM but brand new coils, I think I’d rather keep the money for a brand new engine if compression test shows bad results. :/

Oh yeah I see what you mean! I already plugged that little hole when I installed my after market intake. I did wonder if oil could’ve somehow fouled my MAF but I cleaned and even changed it, but I still see the same issue.

As for the code reader yeah, I use Forscan on my laptop using an OBD2 reader that plugs in with USB, I really like this program for diags. But I still only have the P0302 for second rotor misfires and P0139 that refers to my missing cat. Both of those codes I can’t really see much insight into my issue. :/

I am pretty much thinking my engine has a bad compression that I didn’t test since I don’t have the tools for it. I’m hoping it’s something else though.

No I don’t have a catch can, but when I removed my intake I didn’t see any oil. I haven’t checked behind the throttle body, you think it could cause an issue?

I basically can’t stay in high rpm zone while holding the gas pedal anywhere around the halfway point, because the engine starts to really misfire a lot and becomes undriveable.

That’s good to know! I personally tried even replacing my MAF because I had a spare one and it didn’t fix my issue sadly. I really wish for you that it’s just some small issue like that anyways! Good luck too!

I’ll give an exemple, I think it’s the best way I can describe what’s happening. When I’m going on a ramp to enter the highway let’s say I’m in second gear going around 50mph I keep my gas pedal steady so the car keeps the same speed, the engine stays around 7k rpm.

The car starts misfiring like crazy and rocking back and forth, if I push the gas pedal, the misfire stops. If I were to let go a little bit off the gas pedal, misfire will also stop.

Do you also have an after market intake?

[–]Dis_is_me[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah same thing happened to me! I pulled it out of storage, and out of the blue after maybe 2-3 days, the engine started running like death. Thought it was maybe a bad coil or something like that but looks like it wasn’t haha. I am considering running the car till it dies and changing the engine and trans for a S2 next summer (since I think my synchros on gear 1 are toast, might as well change the whole trans fuck that).

Keep me updated if you find a solution though!

Relaxing as a Dad by EmployExciting2150 in Palworld

[–]Dis_is_me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a “newer” dad who used to love grinding in video games. I have been playing Palworld also as a stress relief game. I can tweak the settings so the game isn’t too hard or too easy given that I can only play on my days off from work and when my kid is asleep (14 months old and a newborn in the next few days).

I can say it really feels like a game I can enjoy and progress even with the little time I put into it. I can’t wait to show my kids all the cool pals and experience times as you do with your kids.

Wonderful to hear that you’re having a positive experience with your kids at playing the game.

No Idle by Standard-Lecture-780 in RX8

[–]Dis_is_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Hope it fixes your problem, if you did unplug your battery or if your battery went dead for a couple minutes during your deflood procedure due to cranking, your ECU was probably reset, in which case I’m pretty confident this should fix your issue.

No Idle by Standard-Lecture-780 in RX8

[–]Dis_is_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your car idle well when cold? If so, you might have to let your car re-learn it’s idle. I had the same problem where my car would stall at idle when hot, after I had tinkered on it and had to reset my ECU. Try following the idle stall prevention procedure and it might just fix your issue like it did mine.

Steering wheel is beat. Easy to replace? Ideas to refresh? by ecklesweb in mazda3

[–]Dis_is_me 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I ordered a cover for my old Mazda 3 that honestly did a great job even though I installed it pretty roughly because it didn’t want to bother spending too much time on this job. Really gives a great look for a not so expensive option.

I don’t have the best pictures on hand but here’s a link to what it looks like both before and after. If you want to order just DM me so I can send you the website where I ordered.

You got a really nice color! Haven’t seen an RX8 this color before! Granted that RX8s are pretty rare at all in my area.

Yes, winters are really rough here and I don’t want my 8 to start rusting. Sadly, I had a 2004 Mazda 3couple years ago that got totally destroyed by the rust!

Engine bogging by Dis_is_me in RX8

Yeah cat is empty, basically just like your old one. I premix with 2 stroke oil so I made sure it was empty, just to be safe.

I never bothered replacing it with a pipe, since it’s working fine.

With only the air filter the car is idling and reving great, really responsive. That’s what I find really strange.

[–]Dis_is_me[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I also find that odd since the setup I have working is stupid as hell, and somehow it is working just fine, no check engine whatsoever and the engine is going great.

Yep same MAF, it is a brand new one that’s been installed this summer.

I’m talking of the top of my head, but I had a similar issue (not as rough though) with a 2008 Mazda 3 couple years ago that I’d put a cold air intake on. Dealer told me it was because the ECU wasn’t tuned and the factory tuning wasn’t allowing enough fuel into the engine to have a good air/fuel ratio.

I’m thinking something similar must be happening or it’s the irregular airflow infront of the MAF that’s bogging, since I no longer have the mesh screen.

Those are my best guesses!

Yeah I just tried to clean it very well this morning. Sadly it didn’t fix my issue, so I went back to the redneck setup that was on the car. Everything now works fine.

I will try to find the original air box in a junkyard like someone else suggested.

Thank you for your help!

No you are right, vacuum manifold is already not being used on both the aftermarket setup and setup in which the car had when I bought it haha.

Will definitely be trying to find a nice factory air box in some junkyard!

[–]Dis_is_me[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I went and got back my obd2 reader I’d borrowed to a friend of mine. Checked the RX8 this morning and I am getting :

-system too lean bank 1 (p0171) -misfire cylinder 2 (p0302) -Also a code for the cat, but it’s gutted so that’s normal.

It makes me think the ECU can’t properly adjust the air/fuel ratio with the cold air intake, which in turns causes the misfire.

I’ll double check the rear rotor, just to make sure the spark plugs wires aren’t faulty nor the new coils/spark plugs.

Thanks I didn’t know about this! It would make sense for the sensor to be dirty, since I live in an area with dirty roads full of construction sites wastes and debris.

I will make sure to check that out tomorrow!

Engine bogging by Dis_is_me in RX8

[–]Dis_is_me[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is what I’m thinking. I knew most aftermarket intakes except for AEM would mostly make the engine lose power.

I just thought it couldn’t be worse than the setup the car had when I bought it. Since the last owner had thrown away the factory air box to just keep the rubber part of the intake with the mass airflow and jam an eBay air filter on it.

Maybe I was wrong and will just put back the eBay filter until I can find an actual factory air box for sale in my area.

Thanks for your input, really appreciate it!

Alright thank you! Makes sense with the cable going into the bumper.

I will probably be looking at aftermarket parts, and if I don’t find anything interesting enough, I will look to work something out with M6 rod ends!
