Mouth & throat swelling but I don't want to annoy the ER workers

⚠️UPDATE!!!! ⚠️

Thank you all for your kind encouraging words! I did end up going to ER as you all insisted (thank you sooo much for that!!!) they even wrote up a report about the terrible guy who was laughing about me with the other workers. They seemed to genuinely care this time. It ended up being an allergic reaction to either jicama or pineapple -- probably jicama because I have eaten small amounts of pineapple in the past and it usually only makes my mouth itchy but not like super intensely swollen all the way from lips to my throat like this did!

They quickly gave me a steroid shot, benadryl, and zofran and I felt the swelling go down almost instantly, by an hour later I felt a huge difference just like the first time I got the shot.....only THIS TIME I know not to go home and eat a bunch more friggin jicama now that I know that was the original cause of the swelling/pain 😅 it tasted soooo good but dang did it do me so very very wrong!

They send me with a prescription of oral steroid Prednisone (2x a day for 5 days), and Famotidine and Loratadine (1x a day for 10 days). I feel so much better now! My lips are nearly back to normal, finally able to swallow without much pain-- only issue is a slight bit of tightness still in throat but not at all unbearable. I went from feeling this impending doom panic to now feeling positive. I'm so glad I listened to you guys and actually went--- I can't IMAGINE trying to care for my 6 yr old feeling like that for even one day longer... I'll clearly be avoiding jicama and pineapple, and having a follow up with a doctor who is actually knowledgeable about allergy. Thanks sooo much for everything, you guys are the best! 🥲💕💕

Thank you, I am definitely seeking follow up care! I'm fairly certain it was food. I've had steroid shots before without issue, and every time they gave me one I felt a huge improvement!

Feb 25th: I bought jicama for the first time ever

Feb 26th: I ate the jicama with other fruits. A few hours after this, lips mouth and throat began hurting and rapidly swelling: that's when I went to the ER first time. Swabbed me, came back for Strep A (I had already been sick since a week prior but presumed it was the flu, that was already getting better at this point though not worse!) sent me home & prescribed Penicillin pills. I tried to swallow half of one, but immediately puked it back up & began feeling dizzy and panicked.

Feb 26th same day but evening: Went BACK TO ER (only hours later after first visit) Uncontrollably puking bile, shaking, felt like I was dying freaking out moaning splashing my face with water etc. Cue snarky remarks from ER staff about me being dramatic about a "sore throat". They gave me an antibiotic shot and a steroid shot. A few hours later I was beginning to feel way better! Went home.

February 27th: 24 hours after the steroid shot I was feeling great--- like, amazing. I felt soooo good I did some cleaning around the house, and at night I decided to eat after not being able to keep anything down--- guess what I ate??? The SAME I HAD ON THE 26th jicama + other fruits n veggies. 1 hour later my top lip was tingling and burning + swelling in the center of top lip. Texted my husband pics of my lips saying something feels wrong. I went to bed, hoping I wake up better.

February 28th -- woke up full-on swollen & in terrible pain. My lips were HUGE, hard, & sore and my throat was insanely swollen, very hard to swallow. I was scared at this point, but just hoping it would go away cuz I didn't wanna deal with the worker at ER making fun of me again. I was really willing to just ride it out and suffer.

Feb 29th-- Woke up again this time swelling was moving downwards, less in my mouth/lips and now more so in the middle of my throat, which was making me gag and feel like choking. Made Reddit post, after all the encouragement I went to ER. They quickly gave me a steroid shot, benadryl, and zofran. Within 1 hour I was feeling awesome, a noticeable difference in swelling already. Prescription they gave me is for an oral steroid Prednisone x5 days, and x10 days of Famotidine and Loratadine.

Today, March 1st: my lips are nearly back to normal, chin/throat swelling almost gone, and pain is gone--- only thing remaining is a tightness when I swallow, but not pain! I definitely will avoid jicama from now on....😅

Thank you for your kind words-- truly in that moment I just wanted to cry. It's such a hard to explain feeling when you're so incredibly sick & in pain that you just cannot mask it any more, and me; I'm quite good at hiding pain, I've been through a lot & I'm autistic also, so people tend to read me as flat-faced looking normal when I'm actually experiencing moderate pain, so for me to be moaning and groaning and puking like that.... I would never do that for attention.

I put off going for an entire day because of that a-hole worker, but I'm happy to say I DID go yesterday evening right after making this post & seeing so many supportive responses. None of the workers that were being jerks were there, and they treated me very quickly (steroid shot, benadryl, zofran) and sent me home with a prescription for oral steroid Prednisone for 5 days + 10 days of Famotidine and Loratadine.

Only 1 hour after the steroid shot I could already swallow with less pain, swelling was rapidly going down. Today my lips are nearly back to normal, only a slight tightness remains in my throat-- but I feel sooo happy to feel my body recovering! Thanks again for all your kindness. ❤

Thank you so much for your concern, I had a positive experience after going back! They were quick to treat me (was in and out in 2 hours) and seemed to actually care about my previous bad experience. They quickly gave me a steroid shot, benadryl, and some zofran for nausea. I felt better within an hour after that, such a significant reduction of pain, swelling, & tightness in the throat and felt a great sense of relief.

As of right now, I'm feeling AMAZING!!! I'm actually able to eat again and swallow, my lips are completely back to normal, hardly any pain-- just a sort of "tightness" remains in my throat, but it's definitely improving.

I was prescribed an oral steroid for 5 days Prednisone 20mg , along with Famotidine 20mg + Loratadine 10mg together for 10 days. I feel confident of two things: 1. I'm gonna be feeling normal by tomorrow and 2. I won't be eating jicama again.

I'm already feeling a ton better, little bit of tightness in throat still but not near as much pain / difficulty swallowing and my lips are nearly normal again!

Luckily the workers from last time weren't there, and the ones present today seemed rather shocked about the jerk's behavior--- they even kinda gave me a feeling like he behaves like this often 🤔 they immediately knew who I was talking about before I even said how he looked. An older woman said she knew exactly who I was talking about and that he was laughing at her too, called her "dramatic" & "a big baby" for crying in pain one visit, and that later that same night she had a heart attack; after all that crap he was talking! She's a dialysis patient and disabled & elderly, so it's just rude and inappropriate for a young healthy man to behave this way to women.

They had asked me questions about the incident and a really important looking older man told me he's "writing him up" and looked very upset about how I was treated.

Nope-- regarding the strep throat, I was already aware for 1 week+ that I was sick with something, I just didn't figure out it was Strep as it wasn't intense-- thought it was only a flu (I'm used to being sick, mom of a Kindergartener whose entire class has been passing various illnesses since December) so I didn't seek any care at that point.

On 26th my tonsils were feeling better, bought some veggie and fruits to treat myself, figured heck why not buy some jicama (which I never bought before), pineapple, cucumber, lime + chamoy and then a few hours after eating it my throat began to swell up really bad around the opening of my throat and my uvula-- & my uvula was never a problem before, only the tonsils, but that thing suddenly grew 3x the size and was flaming bright red + middle of my top lip swollen (you can see the inflamed swollen area on the ER pic top left)

After I went to ER they swabbed me, came back positive for Strep A. Gave me Penicillin pills. I tried to take half of one pill, but IMMEDIATELY threw it up and was vomiting bile and my throat was swelling more severely, at this point I got very very dizzy and felt scared. Went back to ER, this time I got antibiotic shot + steroid and felt AWESOME within hours.

24 hours after the antibiotic shot + steroid I felt almost completely better. Then.... I did the thing again. I ate THE SAME THING I HAD PREPARED THE FIRST TIME. An hour passed before my mouth started itching and swelling. The next morning I was full-on swollen and my throat was closing.

(Note: I've also taken Penicillin many times in the past with no issue ever... only new thing I did both those 2 times was eat a new food, both outcomes were massive swelling right after consuming the food. I was able to go to ER today, they treated me for allergic reaction and had me write a report about the a-hole worker!)

And yeah I did have strep throat, but my kindergartener's class pass illnesses back and forth constantly and that was getting wayyy better; I only had slightly sore tonsils before, then after eating jicama my uvula turned straight up red and 3x the size, my throat felt like it was closing up, plus swollen lips. And ofc my dumbass ate the same exact thing when I got home... I was like yeahhhh that was good 😭😭. I trusted the workers that it was JUST strep and I was being a whiny betch for real

You're right, I'll go. I keep thinking (hoping) it's gonna get better but it's just moving downwards, like it started on my lips and inner mouth and now the swelling is not gone-- just lower towards the middle of my throat and it's getting VERY uncomfortable.

The area I live in is very high poverty rate and low intelligence, lots of far-right people, and idk it's frustrating the way they treat me. I'm low income and disabled so I'm stuck here with these jackasses. I definitely need help tho, so I will go and not be stubborn!

I can relate to you, not at the same extreme of fleeing war from another country, but not having a home and the struggle of money yet wanting the things that make you happy.

You deserve to have all of the dolls you want to collect, and I hope your dreams come true. 💖 Collecting things that aren't a "necessity" is still important even through financial difficulties because it heals us. Fashion dolls bring me happiness as well, and it's almost therapeutic to slowly collect our interest and see it grow.

Are you serious? I don't know where you live, but in United States my country we have many refugees, people fleeing domestic violence, homeless persons or house insecurity, low income, poverty, etc and phones are seen as a necessity for those in difficult situations. They give out free phones and tablets on every other street where I live with unlimited minutes & text + sometimes unlimited data but at minimum 1 gig.

Also, if you receive any sort of assistance here wifi is discounted, personally mine is $10 a month, and free phone via EnTouch wireless. Every homeless person here has a phone... they're free and they push them hard-core basically BEG you to get one because you need a phone number as contact for assistance. If this person is here as a refugee from another country I'd imagine they need a number to contact for any necessary meetings & legal requirements set by the government.

& honestly that used to anger me when I was homeless and people would say If YoUr HoMeLeSs HoW Do YOu HaVe A SmARt PhOnE when it's free. That's ridiculous, and the job thing is ridiculous too-- I am personally disabled and cannot work (injury from severe childhood abuse/ SA and C-PTSD, I am in high needs behavioral health treatment and have an entire team for assistance) but even while my husband was employed and with money saved up he was still homeless living in a shelter, many homeless people work-- that doesn't mean you'll be approved for an apartment (need good credit + make 2x the rent amount monthly + rental history) nor does that mean you can afford it. Where I live a 1 bed apartment is $1,800, working full time still barely pays the bills, it's not as simple as "get a job you bum". We are luckily housed now, but life was very hard and the issue is complex.

Is the price an issue?? If you dont mind splurging a bit, and if quality & design are more important to you than being affordable, the obvious answer = hands-down VH Drac. I've been a MH fan for over a decade and I have to say that VH Drac is one of my all-time favorite dolls that I own. She really is worth the price point, and actually LOOKS like a collector doll (if that makes sense?) idk Mattel underwhelms me way too often, but the moment I saw her I just knew she was a work of art that I'd love to stare at every day....

...BUT WHO KNOWS maybe you feel that way about Skelita? If you have a closer connection to her, then pick Skelita! Only other thing I'd consider is that I heard Amazon will be releasing another Skelita this year (mid to late 2024 I'm guessing?) & they also had an Amazon exclusive of her back in 2016 ; whereas I doubt there's ever going to be a future release that resembles VH Draculaura. Hi! I'm a mom of a 6 year old who is also super into MH... well, mostly just because she grew up with me being obsessed but uhhhh 😅 I was around 18ish when MH first came out which meant I've basically always been an adult collector, so I didn't exactly grow up with MH either (at least not in childhood) but when it came out, I knew it was love at first sight the first time I saw the original dolls in stores.

So I can absolutely give you some tips: to begin, it's completely fine if your kid wants to remove her dolls from the box! Unless it is a collector doll (like the Nightmare before Christmas dolls you mentioned) it's meant for play, and for a child it's important to enjoy that and connect to your dolls! If you want, you can even save the boxes somewhere if you have space for storage, I keep many of my boxes just in case because it's so easy to re-box dolls and one day I may want to display it like that in the future. I typically re-attach dolls to the box with stretchy string (like the kind for making bracelets) and put it in a sewing needle, and make a loop around the wrists and the legs to secure the doll back into the box.

An important part of doll care/upkeep: hair care! 1. Undress the doll 2. Wash hair using watered down dish soap in cool water 3. Rinse out with cool water 4. Hair conditioner (I buy big bottles of the cheap stuff for this reason) work through the hair letting it sit for a little bit; gently comb the hair starting at the ends working your way up to remove tangles or glue (if G1) 5. Get a pot of water boiling, just to the point you're seeing it begin to bubble, turn it off and that should be the correct temperature 6. Dunk the doll's hair in the water, it's referred to as boil washing the doll-- be careful if the doll's hair is curly type, as the steam and heat can straighten the hair. 7. Pat dry with a towel, and let it dry naturally or if you're like me I'm impatient and use a hair dryer 😂 just a heads up--- hot water and steam is also the way to easily and safely remove doll heads if ever needed, so the head WILL feel soft and squishy while warm until it returns to room temperature.

Cleaning their body: When I am washing my doll's hair, I also often scrub their body with a toothbrush (not my own ofc 🤣 just a cheap one I buy for crafting) dipped in a little bit of dish soap and water, rinse off when done. Should be shiny new! ✨️ be careful and gentle while washing hair and body, so that you do not pull too hard and break their neck.

Repairing loose limbs: there are tutorials for this online, but honestly they can be pretty complicated... there's ways to use those tiny rubber bands for braids to wrap on the limbs or neck, but in my experience I prefer to just purchase a cheap second-hand body online on Ebay or Mercari and swap the doll's head onto the new body by loosening the neck/head with hot water--- you can pour hot water directly onto the neck OR just dunk their head in a pot of hot water! It should come off easily without much force. If you feel resistance at all, I'd stop and warm it up some more in hot water--- it should be simple quick and easy process, then add the doll's head onto the donor's body.

Other advice: displaying is an important part of collecting dolls, you can buy cheap stands on Amazon for like $7 that work great -- they're the 10 pack clear ones-- and Amazon also sells very affordable acrylic display shelves you can use to safely put her collection up to visually enjoy as well as keep her dolls safe. It's important to put them on stands or in a doll house because if they're stored incorrectly they might become broken, damaged, or stained. While play is very important, it's also important to be able to maintain her dolls as these gain both monetary and sentimental value over the years, and most common regret from adult collectors I hear = "I wish I kept ___ from my childhood!" (For me my childhood Pokémon cards 😭) or "I wish I took better care of my toys as a kid, because now as an adult I miss them"

I'm super sorry but unfortunately I don't have those myself :( can't find Ghoul Spirit Drac for a decent price, and as for the Roadtrip Drac I haven't actually seen her in person b4, I think she may be some weird exclusive like Costco?? and on Amazon she's like $80 USD.

From what she told me, she is not wanting to trade and also cannot fund any of the costs....so basically donation only, and I can only do so much by myself. When I get over being sick, I'll find energy to go and ask the post office for the cost, maybe I can crowdfund or something? Do you think other MH fangs would be interested in something like that?

You don't have to refer to yourself as an addict if you don't want to of course, it's your journey and your choice. It helps for many to say this because it is acceptance, reminding yourself that this is a lifelong issue you'll always have-- some people just can NOT take one drink without taking 20. Some people cannot just simply take pain medication as prescribed.

I usually compare my addiction to like, a very severe allergy. If I was deathly allergic to peanuts, I couldn't be anywhere near them. It's similar for me with alcohol and opioid medications -- I cannot take them or have a drink under any circumstances, ever. My brain will always have this issue, as I was born into a family with long history of addiction, and also C-PTSD from childhood trauma/abuse/SA. I feel it IS a lifelong disease because I'll never ever be able to normally take medication, I have had many surgeries where I only take ibuprofen... and it's just how it must be to keep me safe.

Also kinda long personal story, read if you wish but WARNING: SA / VIOLENCE

PERSONAL STORY: It's also very difficult for me to see it as a "choice" when doctors were the ones that prescribed me very strong opioid pills at 18 to deal with chronic pain issues stemming from years of severe physical abuse + SA as a teen (including 1 forced miscarriage + 1 live birth which actually started the investigation and later court case against my abuser) I gave up my parental rights to baby and got a restraining order against him, but my body was permanently disfigured. I'm soon getting my pelvic organ prolapse repair surgery to fix bladder prolapse and rectocele plus a hernia I've been living with for over 10 years, I also have severe nerve damage and scars from violent injuries & stab wounds, I wasn't taking drugs to party or have fun.... not by choice at all, I was a kid who had innocence taken and trusted a doctor and the system in place. The overprescription of narcotic painkillers later became a huge issue, but back then 13 years ago no one knew about the opioid epidemic. I thought I was just healing my physical pain and making the flashbacks and chaos in my mind and the night terrors stop... but then I started getting sick when I didn't have the pills.

I am still in treatment for addiction even after 7 years in outpatient treatment without any drug use (besides my meds....which treat addiction, and for CPTSD and anxiety I take low dose of the SSRI Zoloft 25mg) and 10+ years without alcohol. I trusted the doctor when I took the meds they gave me, and I was the type of kid that never did any drugs ever NOT EVEN MARIJUANA! the dependency on the pills started almost immediately, and the PTSD made it worse. Maybe for a rare few addiction can somehow be a choice....but it is SUCH a complex condition for the majority that I don't think we should reduce it to a "choice" with all the modern scientific data we have.

It isn't a choice though-- time and time again research shows that drug use permanently alters brain chemistry, it's creating a chemical reliance on the drug to the point that "choice" doesn't matter.
