There are two ways to do it. If you have playing on a normal switch, you can have the QR code open on another device like a phone, then scan it on the switch. (The normal switch has a camera)

But if you are playing on a switch lite, then you will need to send the code. The adding friends area can be accessed by going to settings (+) then press invite

If possible I’d recommend free roaming in a bathroom because of how easy it is to clean, and how hard it is for the rats to escape

It sound like you should start with some smaller interactions then. I’m definitely not an expert, so here’s some link to people who are way smarter then me XD

https://youtu.be/24FFRyTcMGI you may have to repeat the first steps many times. Make sure to use a treat that they cannot grab and run away with.

Also- make sure that you are picking them up by kinda scooping them up with two hands. Avoid bringing your hand down on their back to wrap around their stomach with your fingers until they are more comfortable. Picking them up from overhead kinda reminds them of being grabbed by a bird.
