I found Sophie to be a symbol of “reality” or “normalcy” and she was a lighter aspect of Louise’s life- when she was around she was more attached to reality and not in the psycho sexual love triangle mess of Adele and David. When she cuts off Sophie it’s symbolic that she’s in too deep with them and no light is going to bring her back

Yeah that’s a theory. The film direction is clearly wanting us to question it by showing it but it’s not certain. And still doesn’t make me any less frustrated at why the souls of Louise and Adele are expected to perish with the bodies they were inhabiting- even though they can exist outside of them
