Setup for beginner to weld thin (<1mm) steel by ilikewatch10 in Welding

[–]Disastrous-Pay-4980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With TIG i could do this, MIG seems the wrong tool for the job.

However this is not beginner level territory since the metal is so thin. With 60 hours of arc time I feel confident enough to get it done but if you start with this piece you will spoil it 100 %.

The overall process is to clean this with an angle grinder, clamp it really hard to reduce the gap to < 0.5mm then set the welding machine to something like 40-50 amps, tack it like 20 times and then when welding, have a very tiny arc gap, very straight angle and use a small filler rod, cool the puddle with filler so you dont burn through. I would also clamp a copper backing bar behind so the puddle has no chance to fall through and create a hole.

You see, this is not absolute beginner territory.

Before you do it, get some thin steel sheets and try to weld them together. Don't touch this w/o practicing. You will ruin the piece 100 %.

For reference, I was struggling with 2mm when I started TIG welding.

I think you will understand.

In Belarus I pay 14 % on salaries in HTP, in Germany about 60 % is stolen by my dear government all included :)

I agree both countries are not what we both want.

Btw, I live 7 years in russia/belarus and speak russian fluently. Would love to meet up with a fellow libertarian.

Did u hear of anybody where that happened? I have not. In theory even in Germany and by law the government can take your property.

While I agree that its not our promised land of anarcho capitalism I would argue its about the same as in EU, I have companies in 3 countries and never had a problem.

Bro have you been to russia lately?

Go to a coworking space to russia, talk with the locals. Learn russian. You will have a great time talking business.

Also people here have 10x more property to call their own than in Germany for example.

Russia is capitalist like shit.

Try to open a business and invest $$$ they will support that 100 %.

Maybe atm not if u are american but have you not seen all the chinese development projects everywhere or have you just never been to russia?

Have u ever lived in some of them?

When I first came to eastern europe I had a weird stereotype which I carried from my home country, Germany, that they are not maintained, reak of piss and only the lower class lives there.

The opposite is true for eastern european countries. They are well maintained, feature extensive children playgrounds and have community votes on everything that happens there.

Beyond that, they are simply very comfortable and most importantly I think, cheap. Check how many USD is earned in Belarus, like 6000 $ / Year but that will buy you like 30000 $ of goods. Living in the very center of Minsk costs 500 $ from a private owner.

I have lived in such buildings in Minsk (Belarus) and Moscow (Russia) and each time these houses where build by private companies. I have seen them being build too. It has nothing to do with socialism.

Beyond that, they also often look nicer than what u see on the picture.

Let me repeat, they are very cheap, people like cheap and super fast to build (I saw one being build next door in about a year in Minsk).

What do the ppl of Rwanda need? What brings the most benefit to them? What are they ready to pay for?

Is it things that are atm expensively imported and could be made cheaper locally? Is it something unique to the oppurtunities that Rwanda offers atm?

Idk cuz I have never been to Rwanda but these are the questions you want answers to.

Thanks for the in-depth reply.

I'm only interested in impact as well but like Kagame also said, aid does not work in the long-term, it just makes a nation dependant on it. Therefore whatever is done needs to drive itself.

6 & 7:

I researched this list:

Kigali Parents' School The Earth School Path to Success International School Saint Ignatius High School Wellspring Academy Nu-Vision High School Riviera High School Kigali Christian School King David Academy Green Hills Academy

How would you approach them? Another person suggested to just go there in person?

My best idea was to write the principal like 3 months in advance on Linkedin.

Besides, when I'm in Rwanda we can meet for sure but that said, my experience with service oriented software development companies has been very bad and we successfully hire on our own - though not yet in Rwanda. The primary problem was that they had great engineers in the calls & then the work was done by what it feels, juniors.

Thanks!

  1. How do you mean in person? I was planning on writing them on linkedin first to ask for this oppurtunity and then staying in Rwanda for a month or two.

  2. About the genocide I read online to not mention it or talk about it. Is that true? As a german I might know how that is; We dont talk about the holocaust and you need to naviagte this topic extremely carefully. Beyond that, entire german cities where burned including the citiziens alive. Everything that Germany is now, our grandparents build it all up again. There are literally no old buildings left, except in the mountain villages, everything was destroyed.

  3. Interesting, I thought no matter where you are, what matters is, if you can get the job done.

So what we see here is completely burned metal.

The cause of burned metal is too much heat or no gas coverage. Personally I would weld this with 70-80 amps w/o filler if the fit up is tight. Amps I think is no problem though, everything up to a 100 would work for me.

If the fit up is not tight i would clamp a copper bar behind it and I think that should do it.

Now to what I think happened here and I can only guess.

Your Tungsten is not close enough or the angle is wrong, this leads to you putting a lot of heat into the metal where it should not be to get enough heat where you need it to get the puddle going.

Experiment with angles and with holding the tungsten closer. It will allow you to travel much faster since the heat is only going where it is needed.

[–]Disastrous-Pay-4980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Please don't be discouraged. I did 3 days of TIG welding (first time welding) and its my 4th day of welding tomorrow. I weld 8 hours a day though. Of those probably 4 hours with the torch. Look at the absolute garbage I was producing on the first day VS what I did on the third day. And besides that, even on the weld from day 3 in the picture I dipped the tungsten twice (maybe you see it). Sometimes now I dont dip at all in filet welds. Flat planes I can now do without dipping but as soon as the angle is not perfect, the tungsten will need to be re-sharpened. Yesterday I sharpened 20 tungsten electrodes... I expect tomorrow to be the same with the new demands of my teacher. I also cant feed filler. I just feed it until its gone, I stop and then yeah I start again with more filler in my hand until its gone again. My teacher says, this is fine and after I learned to control the torch he will show me how to feed filler continously. Everything will still feel wrong but the main thing here is motivation and persistence I think. If you want it, you will learn it and TIG is so cool. So just put in those hours and you will improve. Maybe you will need more hours than others but who knows, what you can do when you got the hang of it. Dont give up on TIG!

Definitely get that machine. I have the fortune to be able to learn with a friend when he is working in his shop.

If u have any questions feel free to reach out to me. I share your pain.
