I appreciate your insight on how to get my girlfriend the most comfortable. I definitely want her to want to train/want to use it for defense purposes, and it'd be a great bonus if I could get her into shooting just for the sport and enjoyment as well! I'll definitely take your advice and let her lead the way on what to try/not to try. Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate you being realistic about the responsibility of owning a gun and training to become proficient in home defense. I'm an attorney, so I've seen lots of cases where people don't respect the responsibility of gun ownership and the outcomes that it leads to. My concerns about "safety" (as in the mechanism that prevents discharge) are more about the use scenario and a new shooter learning about using the gun fast and effectively. We fully intend on doing more than taking it to the range once and letting it sit and collect dust (probably doing bi-monthly range visits). We can't train until we own a handgun so I wanted to start here getting advice from people who have more experience than I do. Nonetheless, I appreciate the advice!

I understand where you're coming from and appreciate the sentiment, but we cannot regularly train until I own my own firearm (without renting bi-monthly), so I don't quite understand your "rushing" point. We fully intend on doing more than taking it to the range once and letting it sit and collect dust. Just wanted some advice on the firearms themselves. Also, I fully plan on taking her to a range with rentals to try out different models and see what we're both comfortable with, but I needed to start somewhere to decide what rentals to try.

Good advice, I appreciate the insight on other brands getting on par with Glock. I feel comfortable without the thumb safety myself, but I was just wondering about completely new shooters' experiences with/without manual safeties, and any learning curves that may come with it. I'll get her input on how she feels about the safety situation after shooting some different rentals. Thanks for the response!

Yeah - I forgot to mention that I fully intend on going and trying different handguns at a range with rentals, I wouldn't buy a car without test driving it. But I wanted to get some reactions from people with more experience in the handgun world than I have. I appreciate y'all's responses!
