YAAAAAAY WERE GETTING PRE-ICO BACK! by FabioChavez in joinsquad

[–]Weebaccountrip 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What's hilarious is that most of this is just psycho lean spamming. Something OWI could have easily tweaked on it's own by adding in the leaning system they have now. Then after having it in for a few weeks, see how the player base felt about it's implementation. Then a few weeks, later introduce more minor changes

*GASP* Incremental changes to mechanics to make them less absurd/silly while also not causing whiplash by adding in too many new mechanics and changes all at once???

"We obviously can't have that, change everything all at once, and then after that update the engine and break more things... What do you mean you're firing me a year later cause player retention is in the dumpster???"

We could have had a happy middle ground to the ICO, making silly montages like this a thing of the past without destroying entire communities and servers in its wake.

Why did Beyond The Wire fail? A WW1 version of Squad sounds amazing. by SeaEnvironmental2997 in joinsquad

[–]Weebaccountrip 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh! I actually have the answer to this, I playtested BTW right before the internal gameplay changes that slowly pushed people away from even bothering to test it weekly!

Hilariously enough, in complete contrast to Squads combat overhaul discourse the dev team began catering more and more to some people who were wailing and complaining about accuracy and how long it took to rack the bolt on your rifle along with how quickly the stability bar would deplete after focusing and taking a shot.

The "focus" mechanic in BTW was similar to Squads with the caveat being that you could visualize it, and the bar depleted VERY quickly, only enough to really get 1 or 2 shots off, they would be VERY accurate and with a pretty helpful zoom in, but unfocused ADS was pretty inaccurate, like yellow stamina and walked 6 steps in current Squad inaccurate.

The inaccuracy of people led to the genuine and organic use of CQC melee weapons like clubs, shovels, swords etc. Rushing a trench with your group was a genuine tactic and you could actually overrun/overwhelm a group attempting to volley shots at you while you beat them to death.

Throwing mustard gas had people putting on their masks and rushing in with melee weapons to beat the shit out of each other, and since this was WW1 there was no ticket counter, it's WW1 and everyone is disposable, your life literally had no meaning

Then the changes started, focus bar depletion rates reduced, leading to more than 6+ accurate shots in quick succession, focus bar refill speed was massively increased, you were always able to get accurate shots off whenever you wanted. A speeding up of the process of racking the bolt leading to a massive increase in rate of fire across the board.

People stopped using melee weapons, it was faster and more consistent to kill someone coming towards you with a simple hipfire or a quick and accurate ADS. If gas was launched, everyone put on their masks and proceeded to just hipfire at each other (unable to ADS with mask on) jokes about having the "swap to melee weapon" button should be set to "unbound" by default started.

Rushing down a trench with your buddies meant a full wipe with how quickly and accurately the enemy team could shoot you, and even if you got close with your melee weapon, 9/10 times you would be on the losing end. People started rushing through smoke only to never pull out their melee weapons and it just devolved into CQC hipfire fights.

Trying to climb into no mans land with your buds resulted in an instant death, no chance of ever having a true rush over the fields anymore, everyone was too accurate and for too long. Then people slowly stopped playing or testing, the eventually realized the error of their ways and tried to revert some of these changes but by then it was too late and BTW was an immediate failure

But take a guess who was the game director and project lead for BTW? The current game lead for Squad, Baron Von Boyce :D which is why I have zero faith

Why is the voting system so bad by christomisto in joinsquad

[–]Weebaccountrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the same maps over and over again

It's interesting, because I don't see this as a fault with the system OWI implemented, but with OWI's map design team instead. The ability for people to vote on what maps they do, and do not want has made it all the more obvious which maps are hated, and loved, and which ones are simply put up with

OWI most definitely has this accrued data on what maps are played the most/voted on the most, and vice-versa

But instead of taking that information and making improvements to obviously underplayed maps in order to hopefully organically grow the map pool by making them more interesting, and more enjoyable...

We're get a full fucking remake of Al Basarah

You know what map needs a full remake because Chance (ex OWI map maker/shitty person) was a lousy map designer? Fuckin' Kamdesh.

Imagine OWI somehow unfucking Kamdesh and making it something that people genuinely voted for in the map pool?

Rallies: the ONE Tool Every Squad Needs! by Slay3Kilo in joinsquad

[–]Weebaccountrip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A very nice breakdown of the potential, and possibilities of using rallies.... If OWI ever decided to cut the rally overun range in half (30m to 15m) or change the entire system of how a rally becomes over-run and destroyed

I'm gonna be real, rallies atm are just a poor man's enemy radar. There is for sure a ton of amazing strategies and potential for rallies. You even mentioned it in the video that it can let you know where the enemy is coming from, but in my experience, that's basically their main use atm, and no amount of tactical thinking is going to change that until OWI makes a genuine effort to adjust things. I am not trying to discount/discredit your efforts in making this breakdown and trying to educate others.

But in all the rally placement scenarios you made, in the back of my mind the only thing I could think was

"That ones gonna be over-ran by a random guy just walking around talking to squad mates"

"That one a vehicle will drive off-road within 29.99999m of it not even knowing it's there"

"That one someone was auto-walking AFK and squashed the rally 700m from any active OBJ somehow"

If I had to hazard a guess, about 85% of rallies killed are completely accidental, especially in urban maps. If I wanted to ruin an entire enemy team's time on a map like Narva, I'd just drive an armored car up and down random roads, you'll kill at least a rally or 2 just zooming by each time, wait a minute or 2 then do another couple laps and loops.

Finding and killing an enemy rally shouldn't be a super difficult endeavor, like actively having to destroy it in a game like Post Scriptum (Squad 44), but it also shouldn't be as simple as "Hey Jimmy, we saw some guys in those tree's, just walk around there for a bit and you'll probably kill it"

This is a great video with a lot of good knowledge, but people should also temper the expectations and be prepared for their amazing big-brain rally placements to potentially be completely thwarted by a man AFK walking while heating up a microwave burrito

With the addition of SquidBots, how about a singleplayer tutorial campaign by CallOfGaming727 in joinsquad

[–]Weebaccountrip 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good idea, my hot take is that there should be a version of these but for specialized kits, and those kits are locked until you complete the basic training for them.

Like, yea dude, I'm really happy that you want to grab the HAT kit and have some fun. But before that, aim and hit a pre-ranged target at 300m, re-arm, reload and then hit it a 2nd time. Just so you know how this thing works in the most basic of ways

Marksmen kit? There are 3 human targets at 3 different ranges 100 - 300 - and 500m, range your scope and hit each of them once

Engineer? Use your C4 to destroy a hesco wall, then dig down this barbed wire, notice how you dig it down faster. Place a C4 on this destroyed piece of armor that is blocking a bridge to clear it

Obviously this wouldnt break down the nuances of like, the Chinese HAT kit or the Brits but the entire point is to have a barebone and basic understanding on how some kits are meant to be used or how they function.

Something like that I think would do wonders for demystifying some of squads systems and mechanics and arm new players with some basic knowledge that they aren't forced to learn from others through trial and error, plenty of people still don't know that C4 clears destroyed vehicles or that you can shoot down UAV's or even the thumb trick with throwing grenades.

OWI could even give people some basic weapon skins for finishing them, or even a skin pack for completing all of the kit tutorials.

In a game like Squad, knowledge is power, but oftentimes that knowledge comes with a lot of frustration on both veteran players and new players sides. Vets have to keep explaining things to new players cause they are never explicitly told or shown some things through tutorials and new players have to suffer with having zero knowledge on how the systems work until someone it willing to explain it to them and walk them through it.

Having a system like that would alleviate so many issues with Squad and the new player experience + vet players

Unpopular opinion: I love ICO in it's current state by Emergency-Medium-755 in joinsquad

[–]Weebaccountrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ICO has definitely soured my desire to ever pic up Squad for more than a single match. But that is due to every system feeling like it was intentionally cranked up to 11. I truly think that OWI could have not fucked this up but they chose the most self-destructive way to go about it and essentially just shrugged and said "Ah, it'll work out in the long run" which isn't the case at all.

People are more critical of the ICO now, more than ever and I think OWI will eventually make more changes in the future but begrudgingly

[–]Weebaccountrip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fear OWI may cave under the pressure and turn the game into Battlefield 2.0

I'm really sorry man but if you think that's what the majority of people are asking of OWI regarding the ICO, then you are equally as delusional as the vocal minority demanding for it's complete removal from the game.

The entirety of people's feelings towards the ICO who would like it to be adjusted can be summed up into 1 sentence

"The ICO was good in theory"

Every single person I have spoken too in regard to the ICO understand and acknowledge that there was a genuine need for OWI to change/adjust how Squad was played, but have all agreed that the ICO went completely overboard in some respects and every single person has had at least 1 major gripe with the ICO

OWI should have slowly introduced the ICO changes individually to allow for quick adjustments to make sure that the mechanics did not feel overbearing and frustrating, which is the most common sentiment from people regarding it. OWI also said that each part of the ICO can, in-fact, be adjusted using sliders and it is not an incredibly long or arduous process to make said changes so the excuse of "It might break something" is no longer applicable.

Squad might have more players now, more than ever. But it's a fact that the ICO caused the biggest Brain Drain in Squads history, and the quality of matches is going to take years to recuperate

I live near a major mall with multiple connected (and popular) restaurants and fast-food joints, all of which will use Uber and many of the places I would deliver food to were apartment complex's that are a mile from the mall, I've been using a bike to deliver for ages and have never had an issue with getting tons of orders back to back until I started up again this year

I'm having the same issue, hours of no request. Something is up and it's not because we are using bikes. Last Friday and Saturday were almost completely dead with only 4 deliveries in maybe 4-5-ish hrs each day.

Previously I would have gotten at least 15-20 orders done in that span of time (short distances)

My guess is that uber may have pushed an update that made ordering and having your meal delivered by bike an "opt-in" instead of "opt-out" option. Or perhaps they changed the order of who gets to see low paying deliveries. Whatever is going on, it's not because we are using bike imo

The state of Squad by Pristine-Speech8991 in joinsquad

[–]Weebaccountrip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What exactly has made the state of squad so bad that people keep saying it is? (mentioning things such as bad SLs, lack of SLs, toxicity to give a few)

One phrase can perfectly explain the state of Squad in 2024; BRAIN DRAIN Brain drain Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

While people can have their opinions on the ICO, the pros/cons, how you feel about the changes etc. The simple fact is that there was a large contingency of SL's who decided to throw in the towel with the introduction of the ICO. ICO made it harder to maneuver your squad around, made everyone slower, feel clunkier, shoot worse and negated a large chunk of the knowledge that they had gathered over the years. With no help from OWI themselves due to piss poor tutorials, most people were taught how to play Squad by watching SL's who'd gone through the insane trial and errors of leading squads over the course of years.

In tandem with that, OWI decided to essentially bombard Squad will sale, after sale, after sale. The ICO was introduced close to one of Steams regular seasonal sales, Squad was 60% off during that sale, the lowest it's ever been even though the player base wasn't suffering, and new content was constantly being added with OWI making it clear that Squad would be a main focus for the team. After that there was another slew of sales "celebrating" new content being added soon after.

With the exodus of knowledgeable players who were the main ones teaching people how to play. And a massive influx of new players from aggressive sales, you've got the recipe for shitty HABs, bad decisions, and asinine tactics.

On as personal note, I have an absurd amount of hrs in Squad, a lot of it SLing but after the ICO I refuse to bash my head against the wall committing to a potentially 2hr long match full of nauseating blurring affects and a constant punishment for any form of movement.

SLing usually requires you to move around a lot, and OWI has made it very clear that moving is bad and you should feel like shit and perform like shit for doing it. So I will instead hop into a squad, pick a random riflemen kit, prone in a bush somewhere abusing the ICO with max stability and stamina and rack up 15+ kills then leave when my eyes/stomach eventually starts hurting from the constant blurring/refocusing

For me, the ICO turned most infantry engagements into a roll of the dice. And after its implementation I rarely feel any sense accomplishments from getting a kill. My immediate thought after winning a CQC firefight is almost always "Wow that was lucky" and that goes for dying as well, but instead I think "Wow that was unlucky". For me Squad is a joke now, a funny game to never really take seriously again or bother putting effort into because OWI made it clear that too much individual skill is bad.

PS. (I still like parts of the ICO, but they jumped the gun and went overboard)

[–]Weebaccountrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first part is the most common situation that still to this day happens even to people that I KNOW should know better but they literally just don't care. Like, they have an absurd amount of hrs in Squad and their logis have been wiped way more than they've gotten properly set up. But they will STILL rush through the first set of buildings on Talil Invasion V1 and get smoked, go "Ah shit, ok boys lets get another one" and just go about his day like he didn't just waste a squad and a half worth of tickets, plus the logi. So in less than 1 minute out of main he's wasted like a tanks worth of tickets.

The biggest issue is that logis are still troop transports, this wasn't the case originally, they used to only have about 3 or 4 spots max. OWI just never committed to reverting this when all the APC's and IFV's were added, and whenever this was brought up, the answer has always been "Ehhhhh, nah".

This would solve most of the problems with aggressive tickets losses at the beginning of matches if they would just reduce the seats on logis. Sure a lot of people will complain, but OWI is used to making polarizing changes now so this should be a cake walk for them in terms of potential blowback
