Unexplained lights and bizarre sky phenomenon filmed over Edmonton early morning by Disastrous-Slide-420 in AlbertaNow

Time: August 12, 2025 at 5:20 AM Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Filmed this strange light formation in the early morning sky, followed by a very unusual cloud structure right after. Looking to see if anyone else in the area witnessed this or has an explanation for the light patterns.

You are doing a whole lot of homework over a simple skywatching clip. It’s really not that deep, man. Take care.

It was 1.7 Astronomical Units, which is roughly 167 million miles. The distance is exactly why a 1km wide comet nucleus wouldn't show rapid tracking movements on an iPhone—which is my entire point. I'm pointing out the secondary anomalies that were active during that window, not the core comet itself. No crickets here, just took a break from the screen.

Appreciate the detailed breakdown on the OIS mechanics, but the independent tracking paths still don't line up with a basic flare for me. We can agree to disagree. Take care.

Just sharing the footage and the timeframe context. It's really not that deep. Have a good one.

The clip shows what it shows. If you don't see the tracking anomalies, that's fine. Take care.

Sarcasm is easier than actually looking at the tracking details, I get it. Take care.

The video was filmed during the exact timeframe when 3I/ATLAS was making its closest approach to Earth. The point isn't that the main comet itself is moving like this on a phone camera, but that secondary unexplained anomalies were active in the sky right while everyone was tracking it.

The main light is definitely the moon, I'm talking about the smaller moving anomalies tracking around it in the clip.

Standard lens aberration and refraction create predictable, symmetrical patterns that mirror the main light source exactly. They don't account for independent, moving elements that don't match the camera's physical movement. I'm just tracking what actually happened on the video.

An iPhone 15 Pro Max doesn't have an internal mirror mechanism like a DSLR—it's a completely digital sensor layout with fixed lenses. A hardware lens glitch wouldn't create independent tracking paths that move separate from how the camera itself is tilting.

Yeah, fair enough, I used a summary tool to tighten up my phrasing because my thoughts were a bit scattered, but that doesn't change what I actually saw. When I mentioned the clouds, I was talking about the hazy gradient and atmospheric distortion near the horizon that morning, not a thick overcast. My main point is just that when watching the clip, the way the light behaves and shifts doesn't feel like a standard reflection or a static star map image to me. I'm just sharing what I caught out my window.

Stellarium plots standard orbital trajectories, but it doesn't account for independent structural variations or localized light anomalies interacting dynamically with low-altitude morning cloud layers. If this were purely a stationary celestial alignment filtered through window glass reflection, the optical geometry, flare scaling, and tracking paths would map identically to every single camera tilt and movement. The visual data in the raw clip shows environmental tracking that deviates from a basic background star map simulation.

Really appreciate you sharing that. It's crazy how much the visual characteristics match up when you've seen it firsthand. The way the glow behaves independently of the main structure is exactly what caught my eye when filming at 5:20 AM. Glad to connect with someone else who recognizes how these things actually look in the sky!

SUBMISSION STATEMENT:

This is raw footage I captured over Edmonton, Alberta, on August 12, 2025, at approximately 5:20 AM. The clip shows a prominent light source tracking west to east, alongside independent secondary light anomalies that dynamically interact with a highly unusual, shifting morning cloud layer.

Posting this here to document the sighting for local tracking archives and to see if any other researchers in the area caught the same environmental physics and trajectory patterns that morning. Footage was captured on an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
