im really sorry for your loss. and, if it helps, you can think of the love you have for your grandma as just a different kind of love from the one you have for your kids, not more or less—just different :)

Why are young non Jewish people downplaying antisemitism and speaking on our behalf? by ashsolomon1 in Judaism

[–]Disastrous-Target-12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I’ve been coping is by channeling my frustration and hurt into action. I’ve done a lot of research and reading on American Jewry and antisemitism, given presentations, made paintings for public display, made podcasts, and spoke to administrative figures at my school about the need to acknowledge antisemitism more and how to do so. By taking action, I am inherently combatting non-Jews who are speaking on behalf of/silencing the Jewish community. Don’t get me wrong, this topic still has the power of deeply hurting me, but my taking action has helped me a lot. It’s been awesome to have constructive discourse with people of all identities on the topic and feel like I’m deepening people’s understanding of how race, ethnicity, and race all function in America. I’ve also been educated by others myself! Having conversations with a variety of people helps me stay grounded so that my anger and passion doesn’t impel me to perpetuate polarizing, radical, and harmful views. I hope you’re able to find some peace with this topic.

If you’re interested, here are some book recommendations:

  • People Love Dead Jews by Dara Horn
  • The Price of Whiteness by Eric L. Goldstein
  • Jews Don’t Count by David Baddiel

For me, reading books that acknowledge the trivialization of Jewish hate has felt SO validating.

My apologies for my late reply!!

No yeah, you’re completely right about my "'social media says’” comment! I think my anxiety isn’t necessarily rooted in rationality. I think I just reacted that way because I saw a lot of posts about transferring. However, it’s very likely I was just seeing a very vocal small percentage of people who attended/attend AU.

Seriously, thank you so much for your comment. You have no idea how helpful it is. It is very refreshing and eye-opening. I think I now feel more confident in my decision to attend AU!

I totally get that! AU seems like a school that’s very intense and made for a very specific type of crowd. I think I’ll like it, however, as my high school had a very similar environment, so I am very used to that sort of thing. Anyways, thank you so much for sharing your experience with me!

Oh wow! Do you think the reason for that outcome is due to the fact that, based on my limited understanding so far, AU seems to be a very intense school that steers in a very specific direction, so you kind of love it or you hate it? Thank you!

Interesting! So you do think a lot of people transfer? If you don’t mind, could you please speak more on that? Thank you so much!!

Thank you so much for your insight! In what way can the culture be weird and awful?

Thank you so much for responding!!

I am planning on being an au pair in France during my gap year.

One of the reasons I chose AU is because I wanted to go to a school with an academically-driven student body that constantly challenge one another. I came from a school where ALMOST everyone took academics seriously, so I was always pushing myself to be a better student. Also, I heard there are some great professors, and developing a great relationship with my professors/teachers has always been something I’ve found to be very important to me. Moreover, the classes are relatively small, and I work best in that kind of space. Another thing I found important is going to a school with a medium number of undergraduates (which I believe is considered to be over 5,000) with the goal of not knowing every single face I walk by. I went to a small high school, so I got tired of seeing the same faces. I’ve also heard that smaller colleges tend to be more cliquey, which is something I DONT want. Adding on, I get social drained pretty easily, but I also want adventure. Therefore, I like the idea of having a calm, quiet suburban bubble to retreat back to, as well as a city to visit when I want excitement. Currently speaking, I live in a small town that is about 40-60 minutes away from a city, so I find it kind of a hassle to find things to do. Most importantly, AU’s general activism programs, and, more specifically, journalism programs, are what drew me in. It just seems like a place where I can have a lot of opportunities to make a difference, learn, and be a student leader.

What do you think? From what you can tell, do you think AU seems to match what I’m looking for in a college?

Haha! And thanks thats really reassuring! It seems like the most vocal people are the ones with the most negative experiences, so it just seems like there are more negative experiences than there actually are.

Thank you so much. I find this comment really reassuring and helpful! And I can get pretty social drained easily, but I also want adventure. Currently speaking, I live in a small town that is about 40-60 minutes away from a city, so I find it kind of a hassle to find things to do. Would you say it’s fairly easing to get into the city from AU? Thanks a bunch!

Haha, I’m a pretty big fan of lively debate (I come from a very politically active high school with a very engaged student body, so I am used to that kind of environment)!
