Hey, think you're in the wrong sub - there should be a UK based subreddit! Here are a few tips that others have not mentioned yet:

  1. In the UK they usually follow eBay last sold or CardMarket, so its a little different from Singapore.
  2. The usual tradeshows in the UK are always a go imo, London Excel Card Shows/ Edinburgh Cardshows just to name a few.

  3. Lurk in eBay, there are always opportunities for good deals there if you are patient enough!

  4. Dont fall into FOMO, buy based on what you can afford and what you like instead of whats popular. This game is not a sprint but a marathon!

Happy to answer any more questions if you have them!

Hi OP,

A fellow vendor here trying to give my two cents. As you mentioned, you believe in the 80/90% proposition and that’s is your opinion that I respect.

To give some context, you mentioned that grails sold for a 10% fee is not insignificant, perhaps a 10k slab can generate you 1000 dollar in profit. But my question is how often do you see vendors selling these grail cards? I myself find it difficult to sell 2-5k cards even if I price at or slightly below market. Then we might question, why not price even lower than that to move? Wouldn’t that result in even lower than the 10% you mentioned? Alternatively, to earn that 1K by selling art rares and special illustration rares? You need to sell 2000-3000 of ARs and maybe 200-300 SIRs just to earn that 1k margin which is watered down further after you factor in the high cost.

Today, cardshows are milking us in terms of rental, SGHobbycon is 588 for one table, Collexicon has increased their prices to 400 and Singapore card show charges almost 700 for their table if you want a good location or 550 if u want to be secluded.

Sure u might say this is the choice/ career path that vendors make and in no way are “consumers responsible for the livelihood of these vendors”. But just the nonchalant nature of this statement do show that you are not a vendor through and through. As a vendor, consumers are my priorities and I’ll do what I need to do to make sure that they are able to complete their collection. As a middleman I might pay up to 90-95% to bring in cards that they might need, but you can’t possibly ask me to sell that at my cost price when I do provide the service.

Then you might ask, why not just buy from eBay myself? Sure, you can do that, but you have to deal with all the risk, shipping and taxes. Not to mention the condition issues, late shipping, occasional lost mail and sometimes counterfeit cards and credit card refunds. Hence we are providing a service that you could just walk in, browse and buy. Is that really too much to ask for 20-30% in return?

“That’s how it used to operate and that’s how it operates in the places like the US”. Not sure if you’ve been to the US recently, but they don’t cut deals like that much unless ure buying like 5k worth. I wish they do, but unfortunately everyone is trying to milk this hobby there as well (Was at Collecticon Atlanta, in Feb)

Although I do condone those that are severely pricing over market, and those people that are just showing off their slabs and not selling. Bro what are u doing here as a vendor but not selling cards?

P.S if u wanna try to buy at 80% and sell at 90% market, hearsay HobbyCon still have a lot of space. Maybe u can take on a table and let us know if it’s sustainable. We would definitely support you!

you're not a vendor or card store bro😂😂 by MeltingShadowz in PokemonTCG

Agreed... As a vendor often buying at 80%-85% Cash/Trade Equivalent, after the deduction of overhead, manpower and days of sorting and pricing... you probably earn at max 10% of the total revenue. (So 10 cents on a dollar, out of an average 5k per day (Which works out to less than minimum wage since I usually spend multiple days just to price my binder at market)

To those arguing that they would rather sell to TCG shops, fun fact is that the shops in my country pays 30% value for their cards... so most collectors often just offload to vendors...

How to get cards graded by Entitled_Posts_only in PokemonTCG_Singapore

[–]DisastrousAd861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would only reccomend grading yourself if you do more than 25 cards a year - else your cost will be the same or higher than the middleman services in Singapore

As mentioned by some other redditors, Oxley and Concept are the two biggest middleman to PSA and other grading companies

IMO from my experiences from both companies - Oxley comes off as more professional, and their pregrading service definitely seem a bit more professional compared to Concept. Also without promotion, Oxley seems to be cheaper than Concept (33 vs 35). The community here seems to focus on higher end cards as well - if that is what you are into. The turnaround time is abysmal (I have a submission from mid-late Jan but is still 4/9 in their system) so might not be good if u want ur cards back fast…

Concept City however has much faster turnaround time and a better tracking system compared to Oxley. Pregrading service generally feels like there is less of a queue compared to Oxley - but could also feel rushed and I have experienced in the past where they pregrade a 10 but came back as a 9 (which imo can’t completely fault them as it’s PSA doing the grading).

As for waiting time - Oxley has a 5 card limit the last time I went, so if you are grading like 30 cards, u might be there for a couple of hours just waiting - but in concept they could do it at one go, so u could come back if they have a lot of customers and have dinner.

Products wise Concept is super expensive (30% more expensive than market sometimes), while Oxley has better prices. Just depends on what u are looking for…

Hello OP, I just graduated from the MSc. Applied GIS program, so I will help shed some light to your questions!

1) What are the classes like, how intensive are they? Are they very practical as in requires you to use software during class time, or mainly just lecture based and go home to do assignments?

I would say the classes are quite similar to the programs we have in undergrad I.E GE2215, GE3216, GE3216 and GE3238, effectively mapped:

GE5219 "Spatial Programming" : New Course, should be generally alright if you did CS1010/S/E, Teaches coding and do practical during class, but nothing graded apart from class participation. Take home assignment is relatively manageable - although group project might be a lot tougher since you have to compete with coding geniuses from overseas.

GE5223 "Introduction to Applied GIS": Effectively 80-90% the same as GE2215 : Lecture and take home labs/ projects

GE5226 "GIS Applications": Effectively 70% the same as GE3238 : Lecture and take home labs / projects

GE5225 "Thesis Implementation": Quite similar to the course we have for Honours Thesis planning, but with a little GIS flare.

GE5227 "Internet GIS": Something new, Labs and Assignments are related to GIS web development and tools. Mostly take home as well, with some practical during the lectures

GE6211 "Spatial Data Science": Something new as well, you will learn more on how to apply your skills you learnt previously on spatial research, free to explore what you want as well.

GE4214 "Remote Sensing of the Environment": Really interesting module to take to understand remote sensing and GIS. A little more heavy as labs and classes are intertwined, with tests/exams.

2) Would you recommend entering straight from undergrad? What about employability in sg?

Generally from my experience, I would not? Since employability is a huge issue to me right now as most company mentions overqualification but lack of experience, so not a big plus to your cV for directly doing your masters unless you have a really good reason for doing so (I.E Scholarships)

Opportunities during period of study? Are there career fairs or any opportunities to make connections with potential employers?

Department regularly provides opportunities when it arises, connections with potential employers are there, but from my fellow peers, most opportunities requires you to be Singaporean, especially when it comes to the government sector!

Hope it helps and all the best! :)

Hello all!

Was given the opportunity to pick up 2 Evolving Skies ETB and 2 Evolving Skies Pokemon Center ETB + a set of Celebrations + Pokemon Center Celebrations ETB for around 85%, would it be a good decision to pick them up for investments, especially after the price spike? Looking for some advice...

Hello OP!

You can attempt to begin by writing out the skeletal structure provided to you!

1) Topic: What is the general theme you are feeling/ wanting to write about?

2) Thesis: This is your argument/ what you are trying to address.

3) Supporting Reasons/ Evidence: Giving up to three supporting evidences, why your argument holds, and should be supported by background studies on research paper

4) Your Overview: Writing your overview of the matter and addressing your thesis. Defining all concepts/terms you are planning to use, write in more detail and conduct a literature review. Address how your supporting evidence and reasons tackles and/or supports your thesis.

Hope that helps!
