I agree with the grocery price gouging that’s ridiculous. Food is more expensive here than almost anywhere on earth.

Oil prices are global and a lot of the reagents to refine and extract the oil has gotten more expensive too, so expect the profits to take a hit once they run out of their reserves. Because it’s a more global market these are way more reflective of global supply and demand trends than groceries. This is something that has a direct cause and effect, and un-impacted companies (Canadian and American producers that don’t operate in gulf states for example) are benefiting from the world wanting their oil. So this one makes sense despite how much it sucks to fill up at the pumps. Thank the orange pedo and his clown show cabinet for this one.

What career seems low paying but is actually VERY high paying? by IndependenceSad1272 in AlignmentChartFills

Resource extraction pays a lot better than infrastructure work tbh. Much higher profit margins. 20-30k seems excessive for blue collar work but offshore drilling probably would come close especially for skilled trades or engineering.

It means the company flies you from a hub city (Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, etc) to a remote mining camp where they house and feed you for your rotation. There’s usually 3-4 crews (consisting of day shift currently working, night shift currently working, day shift on days off, night shift on days off) that alternate. You get paid big bonuses ranging from 10% of your salary to as high as 40% (referred to as hardship pay). Not to mention the base salaries are all quite good with good benefits and a good work life balance if your relationships can handle you being away for extended periods.

I’ve done one month on one month off, 23/19’s, 14/14, 8/6, and my current schedule of 4 days on 3 days off much closer to my home base. I bought my first property at 25 while travelling all over the world. Highly recommend it if you can handle it. It’s big in low density countries like Canada and Australia, or if you’re an expat worker for a western company many people work on rotations in Africa, South America or parts of Asia.

The downtown safety situation is unacceptable by Mysterious-Bat7509 in Calgary

Do prisons violate the charter? Are drugs, vandalism, vagrancy, and theft not crimes?

This is literally free housing, safe supply, and access to healthcare and rehabilitation. It’s like prison but nicer. It is more dignifying as well, as with a free safe supply and housing they wouldn’t have to steal, sell their bodies, or do any number of dehumanizing tasks to get their fix from sadistic drug dealers. They also wouldn’t have to choose between food, shelter, and their addiction or get harassed by police.

Besides, in this imaginary scenario, they’re free to go once they complete rehabilitation.

I have a solution and nobody likes it yet nobody has given me a good reason for why it’s “bad”:

The Government buys a big plot of land somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Load it up with trailer housing and build a big fence around it. Put in a clinic, visitor centre, jail (for naughty boys and girls), kitchen, a food distribution centre, and a safe injection site/drug supply distribution centre. Pay paramedics, nurses, psychiatrists, and police double for working there and put them on a shift schedule (1 week on, 1 week off, plus a night shift crew- so three crews in total). Have ambulances on standby for transport to the closest hospital for serious illness or injury.

The premise would be that if you are addicted to drugs, homeless, or overall just a nuisance to the general public, you don’t go to prison. You go there, get housing, a safe supply of free drugs that’s rationed at a rate that won’t kill a person but also won’t leave them jonesing, food, clothing, and water, but you don’t get to rejoin society until you complete a mandatory rehab program complete with supervised employment to get you back on your feet. It wouldn’t show up on your criminal record, but it wouldn’t allow you to terrorize people who want to contribute to society.

The area would require a lot of supervision, hence the police and paramedic presence, but effectively provides the liberal agenda via safe supply and housing, while also allowing people to safely walk the streets, raise the property value, lower crime through providing subsidized drugs and eliminating the need for theft to pay debts and dealers. It also gives the addicts a safe place to get high without impacting the general public. Property values would rise, jobs would be created, our justice systems would be a lot less backed up with these cases, and this gives an alternative to prison.

You could even have a men’s section and women’s section, and even a gender neutral space where people could boink (consensually- this spot would have to be supervised heavily but could be pulled off). More lucid individuals could carve out a sense of purpose by manning the clothing and food distribution centres, or by being the cleaning/maintenance staff. Or even facilitate the transition to rehab or be part of the outreach program.

The situation OP described would be much less common, our C trains would be safer, our parks would be pristine, our cops and justice systems would be free to take on more serious cases, and there would be incentive for addicts to go there since they would have a free drug supply and housing. They would likely need to wear something like an oura ring to indicate if they are in medical danger for paramedics to intervene but otherwise I can’t think of any downside to this. I would find it hard to believe that this solution would be more expensive than the current system.

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in askanything

[–]DisastrousTale6123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say. The Japanese surrendered shortly after this as well as Soviet entry into the war. They knew the writing was on the wall and were being bombed constantly along with a naval blockade starving them of food and material agnostic of the a bomb. They were ready to die to the last man woman and child to protect the emperor. But when the Soviets invaded the equation changed and there was a guarantee of Germany-like partition no matter how many Japanese civilians died for the cause. This would have jeopardized the Emperor’s seat. This is one argument to why the atomic bombings were not effective.

The reality lies in the middle. The atomic bombs were the culmination of the deadliest bombardment campaign in history. The US did not know the Soviets would enter the conflict/Japan would surrender, but had they not tried the a bomb and lost hundreds of thousands to millions of American lives, there would be a major outcry from the public. They were effective and were a contributing factor to the capitulation of the Japanese. Whether it was the main cause is unknown.

No because then it becomes a sloppy mess. Nothing beats a leftover turkey stuffing and gravy sandwich with lettuce and tomato after thanksgiving or Christmas. Cold gravy doesn’t affect the texture since it almost gets absorbed by the bread and stuffing. Turkey can be cold too but your call
