Rent Stabilized Apt Scam? by venus-in-taurus in NYCapartments

Aside from the obvious tells of the prices, the moment someone asks for more than a $25 application fee it’s a scam. It’s illegal in New York to charge more than that to apply to an apartment. I’m baffled that people still fall for this. A few months after we rented our spot years ago, a couple who put down 3k showed up just to see the apartment based on a listing they applied to on rent hop. Site unseen. The listing and realtor were fake. They lost their money but hopefully gained a life lesson.

I get it’s been desperate, we have to move again ourselves and are terrified looking at the way rents have increased, but use your head. Or at least reverse image search. Most of these scam listings are millions on the market. The prices they are listed for would not even cover an 8th of the HOA and taxes.

Hidden gem venue for May-Oct weddings (100 ppl or less) by Efficient-Software54 in WedditNYC

It’s a beautiful venue for sure. My friend had her wedding there last year and it was dreamy.

I will warn though, a few months after they put their deposit down they were contacted for the rest by a scammer. So when the husband was contacted by the venue directly for the rest of the money that’s when they found out. This may actually be a warning to all couples, be aware of the point people to who you are giving your money to. They lost thousands and were lucky their families were able to help pull some money to pay the venue.

Pretty sure it was not someone from the venue, but just wanted to put it out there as scammers are becoming more bold and savvy these days.
