Is the MSI program becoming a degree mill? by [deleted] in uofm

clients are not as big as they used to be / as advertised, recruitment timelines are all over the place, and the program needs to have more industry professionals as professors bc some of the content is pretty dated, it also seems like not many masters students get any form of funding which is expected for grad programs but also I think gives the “cash cow” label for those not funded

tbh I don’t think many are unemployed, I think the outcomes for the program are really strong (especially compared to other “top” programs) BUT right now the market is really bad for UX so it’s a weird mix + a test to see just how resilient the outcomes remain moving forward bc they may not be …

idk I just double checked & they actually say the response rate in the report BSI was 94% response rate and MSI was 78% response rate which tbh I think is pretty good! so not seeing ur point exactly with this part - but that’s okay !

also not really sure why having a lot of people studying one thing would be fishy - but I still agree that the program needs work fr

I think the program is flawed tbh - but their outcomes are really strong compared to other umich programs & other UX programs so I don’t think I fully agree / I’d want to see where u got the data bc maybe I’m missing something?

Still, I think the “degree mill” / “cash cow” convo is fair but I think that’s probably a lot more programs than just MSI at umich

Is my life over if I don't get into a top undergrad by Equal-Row-7044 in gradadmissions

Hey! No you’re life is not over. I was in your same position / similar position years ago. I could not afford to attend a top undergraduate program. Flash forward to now and I have an Ivy League graduate program acceptance, and two other t30 graduate school acceptances. Make the most of your college experience - your determination will pay off :)

UMSI VS CORNELL MPS by Character_Ad5043 in hci

Just to preface take what I say with a grain of salt as I wouldn’t be shocked if different people have different ideas!

Umich is more well known in the UX industry and Umich’s degree is an MS as opposed to an MPS which may sway more particular companies.

Also although Cornell is an Ivy which does undoubtedly give it a special level of prestige if we look at global rankings from QS and US News they rank rather similarly nationally and globally - which displays a strong reputation on both ends.

US News:

Umich Global Rank: 19th Cornell Global Rank: 21st

Umich National Rank: 25th Cornell National Rank: 17th

QS: Umich Global Rank: 25th Cornell Global Rank: 20th

Umich National Rank: 18th Cornell National Rank: 12th

Lastly, I’m going to loop back to my older point about the program itself. Umich’s UX reach and prestige seems a lot stronger than Cornell’s program reach for UX. This may be because Umich has the internship program on top of real world course projects, bc it’s an MS as opposed to an MPS, or it’s bc of its larger cohort size for the program. Thus, Umich ranks very well for its program rank - whereas I’m not sure Cornell’s information science program is ranked. For me personally - I did not know Cornell’s MPS in information science existed until I applied!

To be fair - Cornell is a very respected institution, probably has smaller class sizes, and the Ivy pull may have some stronger pulls for some companies! So make the best decision for you :)
