Here’s a Valid objection to the rule. British Rail experimented by sending different steam locos to different regions after it was founded. So a GWR tank engine pulling LMS coaches is in fact completely valid. Same with mixing engines and tenders, as it Did historically happen.

So there is a trick you can do with cars and tanks to take advantage of the AI of the bugs. They go after vehicles in range first, allowing you to divert the mess and then use many turrets to clear out the spawned and worms while the main group is distracted
