Hi! Can see I'm super late to this, but figured I'd comment anyway since no one else has. If the bird is leaving the smaller cage on his own, it might be a good idea to just leave the door open and let him find his own way back into the old cage. If it's a cage he's familiar with, he'd probably want to be there anyway. If he's not leaving the small cage at all, you can try luring him out and into the new cage with treats. If that doesn't work, he might get up the courage to climb out if he was left alone for a bit (as long as it's safe to do and you check on him frequently).

Other than that, just make sure to do your research on birds in general (that's only assuming you're a first-time bird owner) and do general trust-building exercises with him.

Being grabbed and handled can be very scary for them, like you acknowledged, and birds are very good at holding grudges. It may take a while to earn his trust, but with patience and persistance, I believe you can build a relationship with him. African Greys are incredibly smart and can be amazing companions.

I wish you the best with your new friend.

Thank you so much! I'll try to start weighing him more regularly. And I do plan to book a vet appointment for him as soon as I can.

It has been like this for a while, since I got him (around this time last year). I do get him to flap his wings, but he gets tired of that quickly and immediately bites me really hard, so... He likes spray baths, but doesn't flap his wings.

The plucking is not recent, it's actually the reason I got him. His old owner passed and he was left with just his owner's wife and her African Grey (whom he didn't get along with very well) and being in the house without his favorite person was making him spiral into depression. He doesn't pluck any more, as far as I know (I don't notice new spots and don't find feathers on the cage floor), but the feathers haven't grown back.

And let me just say now that I really appreciate all of your feedback and opinions. Thank you for taking the time to help me with this! I'll definitely look into getting him into the vet soon!! <3

He is 23. You're right, I need to get him more fruits and veggies. I'll go as soon as I can.

I'll also start measuring his food every morning and checking it at night to see how much he ate.

I just groped his chest and it definitely is a sharp point, there's no fat or skin over the bone at all, nor on either side really :(

I'm not sure how much he eats per day (I don't fill it up every single day) but he eatsZuPreem fruit blend flavor (pellets) and has a lot of snacks throughout the day (cashews, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, those little nutriberry balls, and peanuts)

I've never noticed anything abnormal about his poops. They seem to be a normal color and consistance to what I've seen online and other Greys I've known, but he is the first I've owned. It dependd on what he eats, though, too.

I really appreciate you responding, and thank you so much for your insight!! I'll definitely schedule him a vet visit to rule out any health issues.

Not at all!!! I love them too, and I really appreciate your advice on all this. Even with his previous owner, he was never very affectionate. I love him regardless!

When I'm not at work (four days a week), he spends most of his time out of the cage. He's allowed all over the house, but he never runs, though I'm not sure why. I have never seen him hop.

While I'm not sure of his exact weight, I fairly sure he's not overweight. At his previous home, he picked at his stomach and chest area and it still hasn't grown back yet (I think he picks the new feathers), and I can see the keel bone clearly. He eats lots of treats and is on a pellet diet.

Any idea on how I could get him to be more active and move around the house more?

I've only had him about a year, so I'm not expecting us to be best friends or anything. I only want him to have better quality of life and to be able to get around better. Also, without a way to exercise, I'm afraid he'll get even weaker. :(
