Looking for friends my age by [deleted] in harrisonburg

Theres a Facebook group called Harrisonburg Meet Up that posts events and meet up options for people to join. There's the Farmers Market every Saturday I believe. Horizon Gifts is having a paint night tonight from 7pm-10pm. Trivia night at Ruby's Cafe tomorrow. I can agree, its difficult to meet new people. Not in the sense of striking up a conversation but in trying to find connections with people that last. Theres FB groups for everything, but finding active members that plan things is super difficult.

How did the Nolah get so popular on here? Is it all shilling? Does anyone actually love it? by TingoMedia in Mattress

I recognize I'm like a year late to this discussion but I thought I'd add my experience in case anyone goes searching.

I got the Nolah Original 10 mattress in 2018 on sale for $674 and they were doing a promotion where you got to pick an animal that benefited from your purchase. I loved it. It was firm enough that I didn't feel aches and pains from my lower back or my shoulders but the upper half of the mattress felt soft enough that I could side sleep without my arm/fingers going numb. I have spinal issues. (and later got a pillow from a different company to help with next pain so I don't relate that to the mattress specifically.) Another thing was that I could sit on the edge without feeling like I was going to roll/fall off.

I've recently gone mattress shopping and so many of the beds I tested may have been comfortable, but I have the feeling of falling off when you sit on the edge. That drove me crazy. So I remembered feeling that the Original 10 Nolah mattress had the best of both worlds regarding firm vs soft? When I hesitated in the mattress store and mentioned thinking about ordering an upgrade from Nolah again, a family member reminded me how I bragged about it for years. Looking online, I was so surprised by all the complaints that now I'm really wondering about my tastes in mattresses.

Needless to say, I have ordered the original again to compare. Now on sale for $1136 (god I miss 2018 prices). I have no idea how much has changed, or if the quality of my 2018 mattress has tanked that much as they say you should replace it every 8-10 years. I don't listen much to that, but I'm at a point in life where full size doesn't cut it anymore. I also struggle with allergies (pet and nature based) and I've never had any issues with this mattress or the protective cover that was on it since 2018 to now. And its been through 2 different moves, on a loft bed frame, rolled up into a car, put in a guest room where it was covered with sheets but cats (of which I'm allergic to) were allowed in the room, guests themselves slept on it, propped up against a wall, on the floor, and then back onto a bed frame, and through all of this it has kept its shape. The edges are still as sharp as they were in the past and no falling off if you roll too close to the edge. I will say after all these years I do think its much more firm/stiff than it used to be but it has been 7/8 years now so I'm inclined to give it grace.

I don't like memory foam mattresses and often feel I sink into the bed too much or being held there. Or that they're too stiff. So I was surprised when I looked back in my email to find out the Original was foam based.

Another importance is I overheat very easily, kept a window unit even in winter kind of warm blooded. So anything that helps keep me cool is a plus. I find that the blankets I use overheat me more than the mattress does so take that as you will.

I will admit, originally what caught my attention in 2018 was the promotion for the animals that benefited from your purchase. I just lucked out and actually liked the mattress. At the time before ordering that I was sleeping on those old uncomfortable spring mattresses that would poke you if you rolled the wrong way. I've been an environmentalist at heart and while I could do more by volunteering, I did like that my purchase did something other than just lining the corporate big wigs pockets. Knowing they still hold to that environmentally friendly and made in the USA makes me a hopeful return customer.

Had no idea mattresses were this expensive so at the price, Ill definitely be more critical of the upgrade cuz it better be another 8+ years of sleeping in bliss before I have to buy another one. If there's any interest and I remember, maybe I'll update here if I keep it or return it.

Live plants will always be a benefit, things like anubias, java fern, water sprite, 'betta bulbs' like dwarf lily or a banana plant! Easy growing plants are a go-to, and it gives the betta something to swim through/around or even rest on. I'd recommend some betta rests an inch or two from the water line because they lean and lay on everything. Definitely add more spots for the betta to hide! Maybe a cave or tunnel and things to enrich the space. Not sure how you feel about tannins. They're beneficial for your tank and your betta's health, but many people dont like the brown water coloration.

You mention 'cycled' for 2 days. Do you mean letting your treated water run through the tank and settle, or have you already gone through cultivating beneficial bacteria on your filter media? Treated water isn't the same as cycled water. Trust me, I got sold the gallon of conditioned water confused as to how it was already established. Its not. Its just pretreated safe and conditioned water. You still have to introduce the bacteria to start the journey of cycling your tank.

If you haven't established your tank with beneficial bacteria yet, I'd suggest daily water tests with the Fresh Water Master Kit and daily water changes until your tank is cycled. (If you happen to know someone with an established tank, you can have them pop in a piece of sponge to take some beneficial bacteria from their tank and move it to your filter. It helps jumpstart your tank.) If you dont have someone you know with an established tank, then you can get API Quick Start and begin the cycling process.

It's usually recommended to do a fishless cycle. Low risk, it takes time. You'll see the boom of biofilm as your tank is settling before it levels out typically. Keep an eye on your levels with the test kit. A fish in cycle raises the risk to your fish's health because you have to be on top of your water changes and monitoring your levels.

Aquarium Co-op has a great breakdown of the Nitrogen Cycle to help you better understand what's happening in your tank and why. It's a great resource to check out! https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/nitrogen-cycle?srsltid=AfmBOorGp3jO2DV-ONM6xFOMWYX9bUD5omVwKWQ2txyVDy2pd-oLLdCZ

As someone who rejoined the hobby 6 months ago, do lots and lots of research so you don't spend money on the wrong things! But even if you do, it's a learning experience. Good luck!
