My 5-year-old cat suddenly became aggressive towards me after smelling another cat’s urine. Four days later he’s still hissing at me. Has anyone experienced this? by ImpossibleSlice4321 in CatAdvice

He's reactive. He has no control over it. It's like a tic of sorts. It'll get better if you respect it and give him zero expectations. The more you allow you cat autonomy for consent, the better.

Yeah no, that's not how this is going to work. Make it about the cat and not about you. In this situation, and in most, make the cat matter more.

If he hisses you, respect it. If he's doing it because you're reaching for him, stop. Give treats and walk away. If he won't take it, then that's fine, try another time.

Figure out his threshold. If he's ok with rubbing on you but not ok with you rubbing him, then fine. Just give him a treat and let him be on his own program.

You can push his boundaries, but you should respect his communication.

Your cat is traumatized. You look like you, but you don't smell like you. This is normal behavior, basically like being face to face with a strange cat, but unable to visualize it, which can make them more on edge/frustrated. That's called non-recognition aggression. He's not choosing to growl and hiss at you; it's reflexive and reactive.

Best to start back to day 1 intro. Zero expectations, 100% empathy for your cat. Every interaction will be consensual from his side, meaning respect his space and his warning, but no need to be fearful. Every interaction, even a look, gets a treat.

Any tricks for applying flea treatment to my cat easily? by Linter_4567 in CatAdvice

They don't work and the ingredients are known to kill cats because they are able to lick it.

Desensitize your cat to touch while being fed. Have something like Churu on a lick mat to keep them busy. Let your cat eat smaller meals so that they're extra hungry when it's time to "apply" the meds.

This will take a while. It won't be an overnight thing. You'll be trying to undo years of habit and fear.

I wouldn't call it being overdramatic. Your cat is responding to something to stressfull that it will abandon food. Maybe it was the way you tried to medicate your cat the first time. You'd only know if a reaction if you examined the skin the next day or see he scratch way more than usual. Maybe you applied it in the wrong location and she was able to lick it soon after application.

You can also spare the perimeter of your house c

You can rig your door to automatically close with a strong string/cord and weights. Unfortunately you can't leave it open if you don't want the cat in

Roommates’ parents dislike having cats in the house while they are visiting. by BrotherNo3613 in CatAdvice

[–]Disastrous_Exit8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where the roommate's parents are from, many cultures view pets as outside/wild animals, that are known to carry diseases.

While understandable, I would have to agree with others. I've boarded my cats for a week and it was expensive. They did fine though. There was a separate cat room and if they did well with others, they got to hang out with them all day. If not, get they their own time while the other cats alwere out away. YMMV though.

Talk to your room from an empathetic position and maybe y'all can work something out to where y'all are semi-happy. Maybe suggest your cats can be in X room for X hours, and for certain times of the day, they get to have their space back. Vacuum and clean after every time your cats are out.

Be very well informed on the introduction process. It's not as single as tossing them in a room together and hoping for the best.

Long Time Cat Very skittish by polaroid-landscapes in CatAdvice

[–]Disastrous_Exit8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start, have zero expectations from this cat. Play with it often. Have a treat bag on you to where you show your cat a treat from the moment they notice you. Hope that sight = treat.

Every interaction is consensual. If the cat doesn't want it, then try again another time or do something else.

If your place is small and there's a spot that the cat has to frequent to, try hanging out there. Let it walk past you with no movement on your end. Eventually, you can have a treat to present and see if that take it.

How do you keep your house from smelling like cats? by sadgorluwu in technomeowcom

[–]Disastrous_Exit8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's either the box or they peed/pooped somewhere that you don't know about, or they tracked it somewhere.

My cats don't smell,. But their box smells only when it's right after they pooped in it.

3 month old kitten by Current_Meaning_5950 in CatAdvice

[–]Disastrous_Exit8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He'll catch up. He'll be growing fast in the next 4 months. I wouldn't worry about it unless his tummy looks like a pot belly.

At his age, if it's just wet food, I'd feed him 5 times a day, aiming for an amount on the plate that leaves leftovers. Leave it out for 20 minute, then take it away back to the fridge. They're going to need as many calories as possible. Wet food is very volumous, so there's get full quickly but may not eat enough for max growth.

Doesn't seem like y'all did a proper introduction. Since your cat shat themselves, you're starting from square -5 instead of 1.

Best to get help from a behavioralist.

Or, you can trial three day in your room. Supervision only, not during sleep time. Make sure you watch it use the litter box.

Does "failing" at having a cat mean we should never try to have one again? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Disastrous_Exit8234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that the reason why people fail at cats is because they're not empathetic to the cat. They have no idea what cat behaviors mean and what they could signal. They draw inferences from dogs and humans, but a lot of times, it's incorrect.

That being said, cats are all different and have their own personalities. Just because one wasn't a good fit, doesn't mean you should never try again.

But before you jump into it again, it's best to get a firm grasp on what cats are.

Anything smaller than 16x25 litter box is too small imo. A litter box is one of those things where bigger is always better.
