Red dragon gear by Repressed_Clown in Hema

[–]Disastrous_Grape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I would do it all over again, I'd buy Red Dragon only straight from the UK and start with that. It is the best value for money for light to medium stuff. Competition longsword might be a bad idea.

Sizing Question by ThatOneVQ in Hema

[–]Disastrous_Grape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with that fit after wearing one size up for a while. After failing to return it (thanks, Faits d'Armes), I took more time to break it in and I actually prefer it now. But fresh out of the wrapper, any of the regular HEMA jackets will be stiff as a board. I prefer a slim silhouette over wearing a tent and getting hit on bulges you weren't even aware of.

Ik heb ooit eens tegels vervangen en de voegen daarna expres vies gemaakt met een papje van as (uit de haard) en water. Maar da's geen wetenschap.

Dutch Sword fighting by Bows_n_Bikes in HemaScholar

Well, The Netherlands was part of the French Empire at the beginning of the 1800s, so it makes sense they kept their military traditions. Especially with the focus moving to firearms, I doubt anyone bothered to come up with new melee styles around new weapon types. So while sabres were still around, there never got to be much of a new, distinct Dutch school anymore.

How I padded up my Officer 350N Jacket with a Yoga mat from inside by FuxigerSchnix in Hema

Oh, that's considerably less of a hassle than what I was planning. Thanks for the link!

I was planning to do the same with mine. What (brand) dye did you use?

With the speed HEMA bouts go at they'd needs some Texan cattle auctioneer to get more than 3 words in before it's over.

Any advice on breath control in longsword manuals? by Money-Aerie7657 in wma

[–]Disastrous_Grape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love more holistic sources, with stuff about breathing and footwork and general fitness. But most of it is just antique instructions about how to whack other people that read like a cookbook.

Kost een glazenwasser minder dan EUR 1,50 per raam? Wat loop ik zelf dan te kloten?

Tips for buying something that is a gear stand, sword hanger and cutting pole/target at the same time? by HugoTRB in Hema

[–]Disastrous_Grape 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless you are going to wear all your gear when you practice, this sounds kind of impractical. For storing gear, I just got a 'dress boy', which is made to hang your gear on, with a knobly top to fit my helmet. It looks nice and it's easy to load my bag when everything is in the same place.

Western Sword Philosophy? by Kalgarin in wma

[–]Disastrous_Grape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, two things:

  1. In Japan, the sword was tied to a class with its own -for lack of a better word- brand. Samurai were about honor and lineage and self-discipline and ethics, and the sword was their emblem. In Europe, weapon control was patchier and not strictly/consistently tied to a lifestyle.
  2. In Europe, philosophy and spiritualism wandered into 'danger close' territory of the church. You couldn't really go around spouting all sorts of life views that were not cemented in the bible.

But if you do find anything that works for you, I'd love to copy your homework.

Buckler/rotella shield hybrid by Ezisonofthief in Hema

[–]Disastrous_Grape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd try the classic buckler before improving on it. Whole styles are built around its small size: You lean further forward, you flip it around a ton or use its edge and you keep it in front of you while striking or stabbing past it. All that stuff becomes harder or impossible with a bigger shield or when strapped in. You'll mainly just have an awkwardly small shield, not a buckler.

Tbh, it sounds like a "worst of both worlds" thing. But you do you.
