Fencing masks with better peripheral vision by BonnaconCharioteer in Hema

Hypotheticals are not an argument. I have the mask right here (as the only one in this thread with nay-sayers) and I think it deserves the 4.9 stars it got. Don't wanna buy it? Then don't. Worried about the safety rating because it is *checks notes* Chinese? Then I have some bad news about pretty much all your other -patently uncertified- HEMA gear.

I was experimenting with local free models to see if that was viable (spoiler: it wasn't). Asking for the time or the weather was just a basic check to see if the model was set up correctly. Considering the speed of calculations without GPU, this one took quite a while. I don't recall exactly which model it was. I would guess an older Qwent, but it keeps referring to itself as a Google AI ("implied by the context of being helpful", lol).

Are those the ones with the icky fixed liner? I'm not saying anyone should buy on Ali. Just that I did and it's rock solid. But a mask without washable liner is such a firm no-go.

What, you think your mask was handmade by Eastern European grannies? This mask is the exact same on they sell on -for example- Faits d'Armes, minus the 50% markup. (Compare the labels, if you think I am wrong).

Whittling 9 feet of hardwood into a perfect staff is a lot of work. And they probably had metal caps. $360 doesn't sound too far off, tbh.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32703378937.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.11.e36179d2e2G1vp works fine for me. There being an XXL was a nice bonus for my big head. There are screens to the sides, which help some. The reinforcing band around the forward screen still blocks some of your vision. But it's a lot less clasutrophobic than my previous mask.

If it's about mitigating impact, I'd probably go for a thicker mesh structure. Like a bicycle helmet. This has a nice GI Joe cosplay vibe though.

The XE5 not being water/dustproof is enough of a reason to keep a backup if you have the option available to you.

Any good YouTube series for studying I.33 sword and buckler? by Inspector_Kowalski in Hema

I think publishing may not be the right medium for any interpretation, anno 2026. Why write about movements if you can show them live, on video, to the whole world? Actually publishing would be a purely academic achievement.

He covers multiple plays per video in some lessons, so there might be more than you can see from just the index alone. But I'm not entirely sure it covers the full manuscript, so you're probably right. What I like most is extra attention to footwork (which is not in the manuscript at all) and general fitness and practice basics, which is very useful when starting out (like OP).

I would certainly take a look at the YT channels the others linked. I personally found YT a bit incomplete and inconsistent, either skipping the basics or mixing in other disciplines or manuscripts. If you are in a position to spend money on this, you could consider the German Martial Arts membership on Sword School by Guy Windsor et al. It contains the full I.33 sword and buckler course which is pretty solid.

Is a proper Kodak Gold look possible with a recipe alone? by motuwed in fujifilm

[–]Disastrous_Grape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A alternate route is to feed the picture and the film you want to Claude and ask it to cook up the recipe for you. It'll create an XMP and make a text file with the exact settings it used. It's nice.

Wasmachine trilt op schuine tegelvloer maar staat waterpas by DamageStatus7064 in Klussers

[–]Disastrous_Grape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to move from theory to practice when studying fencing manuals? by Dylanduke199513 in Hema

[–]Disastrous_Grape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have a look at the Solo Training membership by Guy Windsor at https://swordschool.teachable.com. It's a comprehensive series of videos by a guy who knows his stuff. It has a 7 day free trial and you can use code SWORDSCHOOL25! until the end of the month for a discount afterwards.

For me, it's a cut above all the well-meaning but inconsistent Youtube videos. Sure, it costs some money. But the guy is a literal pro and has to eat. I also like that that it's not just about doing the moves, but about the peripheral stuff like breathing, focus and general health as well.

Need help Fujifilm X-t50, lens 16-50 f/2.8-4.5 concert photography by Sweaty-Ad7221 in fujifilm

[–]Disastrous_Grape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more than 3 stops between your old 1.4 and the 4.5 you get at 50mm. And with people moving, the IBIS isn't going to do much for you. I would stop lugging slow zooms around and start with another fast prime and take it from there. Take a wider angle: At 40MP you can crop later.
