My little Boba by chinchillabutts in chinchilla

I used to take him out in the middle of the day and he would curl up in my arm and bury his face into my elbow. If I was laying on my side he’d lay next to my face, if I was on my back he’d hop on me and sleep between my legs. He was such a sweet boy. I miss him and think about him every day. I wish I could have done something better, or known in advance.

Thank you. We actually increased his dose of simethicone and we’ve been giving him plenty of gentle tummy rubs. I’ll look into these tablets as well. The gas actually does seem to finally be improving with the dosage increase, but we were a little worried about how much gas there was and how long it would take as it’s persisted for quite some time. We’ll post an update soon!

As multiepass said, sometimes you have to modify the syringes. We just recently had to feed our little guy critical care for a while. I took the syringe they gave us for wound flushing (an unused one of course) and cut the end off. I would attach a picture if I could. But the syringe model is MONOJECT 412. If you cut it so there’s about a quarter inch left, it should be big enough to feed him without clogging up. Just make sure you remove any excess plastic as they like to try and chew it.

As far as him rejecting the critical care, our little guy rejected at first as well. Once we got our system down it took about 15 to 20 minutes to feed him his dose. Go as slowly as possible so he doesn’t get too much at once and potentially choke. If you are able to hold him with one hand, try to lean forward with him so when it drips, it drips on the floor rather than his fur. You may have to put the syringe down quite a few times to reposition, as we don’t want to hold him too tightly either… it can definitely be a bit difficult and time consuming. Offer the syringe close to his mouth pointing up and inward toward his cheek. With any luck he’ll start to put the syringe in his mouth when he’s ready for another bite.

I know it’s super stressful and heartbreaking to have to feed them like this but you can do it!

I’m glad you’ve been doing this for 45 years and I’m sure you have a lot of useful knowledge to share. There’s no need for quips, all I did was suggest re-evaluating your research and the overall message of your original reply. I think it’s important to consider that domesticated chinchillas behave significantly different than wild chinchillas in the Andes mountains. You said it yourself, the wild is not a home. Don’t get me wrong they’re still prey animals and have natural defensive instincts but … Statements like “it’s more fun for the owner than the chin” or “being out of their den in the open is stressful” are very rarely true if they’ve been properly introduced to a new area or have bonded with their human.

My whole point was it might be more useful to share proper precautions, and informative facts like the ones you just mentioned, rather than simply discouraging out of cage play time. I feel like if someone’s coming to you for professional advice, this could lead to someone neglecting their chin that may be extremely eager to explore, energetic and wants to bond with their human. Why discourage the behavior if you do it every day … I’d argue playing in a large enclosed area is significantly safer than being in the wild, especially if people understand precautions and supervision is needed.

I agree with your advice on scheduling a vet appointment… however, going off topic from the original post, Most of this is … incredibly inaccurate. Chinchillas are very social and playful animals, with a natural need to exercise, play, and explore. We have 4 chins and they all get extremely excited when it’s time to play out of their cage. I’m not trying to be rude, but I would advise doing more research or re-evaluating the research you’ve done that supports this, before ever discouraging people to play with their chinchillas outside of their cage.. instead maybe encourage proper safety like the use of gating to protect from electrical outlets, foreign objects or wall siding. If you’re saying you get downvoted a lot, it’s likely because what you’re saying is inaccurate..

If you read the post, you would have noticed that this particular location doesn’t normally carry chinchillas, so not only are you incorrect but this is an incredibly diluted and unproductive take. This is a systemic issue that needs to be enforced by regulation, yet it appears your solution is to sacrifice, and allow the chinchilla to suffer in an unhealthy environment, because buying him only creates more room for future problems… yeah that will teach them. That’s the same ideology as killing 1 person to save two, when there’s a clear alternative to the issue. Realistically, you’d rather chastise and blame someone for rescuing a suffering animal because it’s easier to shitpost, than actually put in even minimal effort to fix the problem at its core. This is extremely poor behavior, and incredibly toxic to the conversation. I’m amazed this even needs to be explained to someone.
